If you can't sleep, how do you resolve it?

Ok, it's been five straight nights already, I'm getting cranky, bulging baggy blacky lower lid weary eyed, and I think I've counted enough sheep to jump over the fence that the fence is needing repairs now and I can be sued for animal cruelty. I've browsed enough sites that I felt that I've found the very first ever website. Ok, I know I'm exaggerating but you get my drift. I'm having trouble getting some good old fashioned 6 - 7 hour sleep at the least. I'm actually getting some sleep but no more than 4 hours and very lightly headed that I can still sense an ant passing by. I'm contemplating getting some meds but that would be as a last resort. Do i need to see a doc? or you guys got something to advise or share to this poor fellow with your own rituals, regimen, routine, drills, etc. so I can get that proverbial "sleeping like a baby". Thanks ahead.

I've had bad sleeping trouble for a couple years now. Right now I'm on a sleeping aid, Ambien. My doctor says she wants to wean me off of it, but for now it's what's helping me sleep. My problem with sleep has also changed. I used to have trouble just plain falling asleep. Now I wake up too early! Make up your mind, disorder. Most of the tips I can give you, you've probably already heard before. Exercise during the day, eat healthy foods, and practice good sleep "hygiene". Give yourself an hour before bed to wind down, turn off the tv and the computer and everything else that's shinning electronic light in your face. Keep your bedroom as dark as possible, have a little white noise like a fan. Get up at the same hour and go to sleep at the same hour every day. Don't lie in your bed to read, watch tv, write, or whatever, even during the day. So getting in bed will give your brain that consistent signal of, "Okay, it's time to sleep now!" I hope you find what's holding you back, good luck!

Actually your tips sounds alright, I find the having a little white noise quite interesting from your view - how does the buzzing sound of the AC, should I consider it the same? staying away from the bed for other activities other than sleeping there's a deeper sense to it but as of the moment this might prove itself insurmountable task to accomplish but I'll give it a try. Appreciate your tips immensely, thank you for sharing them.

Well I guess it would depend on how the AC buzzes. In my place it's kinda nice and quite like a fan, but I've been in other places where it's loud and obnoxious. It could be white noise. When I started having sleeping trouble I realized that I would lie or sit on the bed to read and surf the internet a whole bunch more than I was thinking I did. These days I take my reading and my computer other places in the house, and it actually has helped a bunch. I got this tip from multiple sleep aid books, articles, and people. By the time I'd heard it the fiftieth time I figured there might be a bit of sense to it!

I'm finding that vitamin D, and other nutrients that help me assimilate vitamin D, are important for me. There are as many different reasons to have problems sleeping, as there are people who, have problems sleeping.

I guess I am fortunate that I sleep so well, anytime, anywhere. When I close my eyes to sleep, I usually do after a few minutes. However, I did live with someone who has got the same symptoms---just sleeping a little, and very very lighty. She did go see a doctor who gave her pills to take. I am quite a believer of medicine. I get a headache, I take a pill. I get a stomachache, I get a pill. I know some people would like to avoid taking pills as much as possible, but since it has been five days already, then I think you should consider that option.

Hello Kat, first thing off, thank you for sharing your thoughts especially the hint of concern there. By the first week of July, work related stresses will be gradually minimized that should significantly resolve my issue. Pills, I'm just not a fan to it. Getting one for me is when I travel only, otherwise I'll take on a hot green tea or I'll just put on Efficascent Oil (yep it smells). Once again, I appreciate your posting.

I don't sleep many hours most of the time. One thing that helps me is a warm shower makes me tired and a really dull book. I have fallen asleep in many chairs with a bad book. Good luck and certainly turn off the television, as I have watched around the clock more than once.

A dull book, hmm - sounds like putting the brain on a bad deal with no option to escape other than to sleep. Would like to give it a try, hopefully I'm put sleep before I'll tore the book into two but on the bright side thank you for sharing your thoughts.

I have gone through times in the past where I haven't been able to sleep, and one of the best bits of advice that I could give to you would be that if you don't feel as though you can get to sleep, you shouldn't stay in your bed, because they you definitely won't be able to do so. You should get up and go and have a bit of a walk around as you would be much more likely to be able to get to sleep if you tired yourself out a little bit. Do something that would take your mind off not being able to sleep; I always find that reading a book helps me a lot.

Hey GemmaR (w/ capitalized R), I think I've seen you in one of my discussion I've started (too lazy to look for it), once again thank you for sharing yours here. Yep it's been crazy nights for me, I hate being edgy & jumpy, I'd be getting a full 3 weeks of work leave soon I'll spend them all up just maximizing rest anyway I can, of course doing still myLot on the side. Hmmm, stay away from bed tip is getting popular and I think I should really give this a good try. Once again thank you for dropping by. I feel too lazy to do so much now, I'll look over your post sometime & check on your Triond link too later.

We have same problem. There were a days when I could not sleep tight, seems like there always something stuck in my mind that keep me awake till very late. I am the one who sleep late and wake up too early. But I have found new habit that make me easy to sleep. My bed is lower than my knee,, made me easy to creep up or creep down I found that when Im laying on the floor I am easy to feel sleepy, so I start laying on the floor: with my legs on to the bed while my body on the floor till I fall asleep, after sometime I feel sore, and creep up feeling tired into my bed and fall asleep till morning come you want to try? it works on me

maybe its time to pay your doctor a visit just to make sure there isn't anything seriously wrong (hey, ya never know!) but in the mean time, you could try melatonin. its sold at health food stores and it is something that your body makes naturally, this just adds a bit extra to it.

When it is hard to sleep, i start to count 1, 2...till i fall to sleep. However rarely i lost sleeping because i go to sleep so early every night, around 9-10 pm. In fact you can drink warm milk before go to sleep. You also can take shower with warm water or soak your foot in warm water before sleep, it will make you can fall to sleep easier. Better you don't drink coffee or tea in the afternoon and evening. When go to sleep, try don't think anything else, just think of sleep only. I hope it works to you...

Try to read books or watch tv till you get sleep. Or try to pray the rosary couple of times cause it could lead to sleep.
