Do you look at the star ratings before responding to users here?

I do not look at stars before responding to users here. Nor do I see if the user who starts a topic is on my 'friends' list. I respond to topics. As most know this rating system that decides the colour of stars needs revamping as not every one here knows how to rate. Some of those with low ratings could all you know be the most educated, enlightened individuals. Since rating is decided also by those who hardly know what rating is all about their ratings go down but unfortunately one tends to look at them with coloured glasses. How important is a star for you?

Hi there Allknowing! (I just got my red star few minutes ago. I was used with a blue star with my old account..^^) Anyways, since I was a newbie in here like years ago, I don't settle with those mylotters who have stars. I don't really mind at all. And in fact, I always rate everyone in here whenever I encounter them...and it's also like helping them in here. It is definitely very rude to do that. Happy Mylotting! ^^

So this is your second account! What made you give up your first one? There are many here who wind up their earlier accounts and start afresh. Since rating is not transparent some misuse it. Nice to know you do not look at the star before respoding.

Sometimes, I do.. when I find the comment very substantial, I get intrigued and I check if this is a long time member or a newbie. When a comment is so lame, I also check to see if its another newbie who doesn't give a damn about mylot's purpose and I'd leave it.

No harm in checking profiles specially when one has plans to accept a user not only as a friend here but to take it to another level. I slightly disagree here with regard to the quality of participation depending on whether a user is a veteran or a newbie. You jureathome for example have always participated like a veteran right from the day you arrived here!

If you go against the thought process of some veterans (even if they are wrong) specially when one is a newbie here, they do not like it and that is how my star went down.

Wow, thanks for the compliment, allknowing. I think the best way to be able to participate well, is to choose the topics where you can best contribute to. And, always keep guidelines in mind and the common goal to help myLot grow.

A star is not of great importance to me as far as responding to a discussion goes.I peep into friends' discussions first and look at topics that may interest me.The second thing is I pick topics irrespctive of who the person is. That is my order of priority.

I too never bother about star or for that matter about anything else except the topic of discussion,if it interests me and feel that I have something to add , I simply go ahead and do that ...many a times I respond to discussions started by newcomers ,,

When my star plummeted all of a sudden it did affect my participation but gradually it dawned on me that it had nothing to do with the quality of my performance but some prejudice doing the rounds. The rating system allows prejudice to rule here. You are doing the right thing. Not giving importance to stars is the way to go.

Hi For responding to any discussion, I don't need to look at the users star. I choose discussions for responding when they are my interest related. Sometimes if they are not my interest related I try to find out about it from responses and then response. So its surely not depends on star. About my star, I don't care much about it, but it will be wrong if I will say that I completely don't care about it.

Star? no, it's not of important to me. i comment on topics i want to. To tell you the truth, i haven't even rate anybody yet. i dont even know how to do that, or better to say, i dont even care to rate. everyone can say whatever they want.

You have just about reached a number that allows you to rate. It is left to you to rate or not to rate but rating does affect one's reputation here. It would however be folly to judge on their ratings as many times one is rated wrongly.

You are right. Rating can be use as a guide to let us know more about a person, but to judge a person just by his/her rating, it is really not fair. Some discussions that i read and took part are very good and enlightening, but the people who wrote it just have low rating.

I honestly couldn't care less waht your star rating was. If I like or can respond to a topic then I will. The rating just means someone has rated your response up or down. If someone doesn't like you they could just be rating all comments poorly and make your rating go down. But now that we are on the topic I looked at all responses and their star ratings and I have the lowest! Must definitely mean I'm not as good haha :D

I got my ten at a time when I did not even know what it meant!. But I lost that place due to some prejudice apparently much later. @BabyCheetah - "people thought I had good comments and was being useful " There are many here who are great contributors but their ratings go down simply because many users do not know the meaning of rating here.

Oh well that's not good. I also heard that there is no system to prevent people from constantly giving you a negative rating so if someone has it in for you your rating will keep going down :(

Well this is the rating I got when I hit 100 so I was quite surprised and happy that people thought I had good comments and was being useful so I like that. But in general I don't look at them and judge people because we all don't really know eachother and different people have different answers to things that's all. I've rated a few people already too when they have been very useful but I have done the opposite for unhelpful 1 liners.

Looking at stars is but natural but getting influenced by them would not be the right thing. I too am waiting for my star to turn blue which was, some time back.

Hi All, as for me, i don't really care much about my star rating. I ever seen my star rating goes up and down within a day when i was very active in here. Most of the time, i respond in here according to the topic that i easy to relate with. I won't have the interest to post in the topic where i don't have the knowledge. And makes the topic starter confused with my answer. Hopefully by doing that way, my star rating won't be moving in unwanted direction. Hope you are doing fine...

The less importance one gives to ratings the better for peace to prevail here. This is a weapon that is misused. I only hope that those users who are rampaging bringing down ratings of those who are great contributors here will realise they will be the losers in the long run.

Star ratings are pretty useless to me and I rarely pay attention to them. They will never determine the likelihood of me replying to a topic. I check to see if the discussion is popular or located on the top because I know that a lot of users are providing insightful feedback. This will likely increase the chances of a prosperous discussion and you don't have to be ranked to contribute brilliant ideas!

To be honest, I don't used to see star of the users while i respond to their discussions. I feel almost all of the discussions are good and the only problem is that i don't have time to respond to every one of them.

No, it doesn't matter to me. What I am looking at is the topic, if I am interested I will respond. That's it and nothing more. I also don't care if the topic was started by someone in my friend's list or not. I just want to share my views to any discussions that interest me. So stars are not that important to me.

Just a thought -- there may be topics started by less active members, usually newbies (like, below 100) and the discussions won't continue because they no longer come back to respond. It would be good to have an active discussion, too. What Im saying is, one way to get a good chance at having one is to join discussions started and participated by long time active members.

There are times that I look at the star rating and colors of the star before responding but doesnt mean that I am not going to respond to their discussion. The reason why i am looking the star i just to know the different colors of each rating so that if I can have those colors I easily recognized it even without looking my own star. Star rating is not important to me because I am more intersted on the content and sense of the discussion. Also I know each one of us here in mylot putting lots of effort to start a new discussion so whether the star rating is higher or low if the topic is very interesting for sure I am gonna respond it.

It should not be a deterrent to respond to those topics posted by users who are being axed and their ratings get affected for no fault of theirs. We should only be concerned with responding to topics that interest us regardless of their rating. There are so many users here with low ratings but come up with excellent topics. Looking at stars or even visiting profiles is a good thing. Following up on certain users (not stalking!) is harmless.
29 Jun 12
is there such thing? that's like being racist eh? nope, i don't mind if the one posting is new or old as long as it interests me and I got a something to say.

Nothing to do with race or culture but some users have yet to get a hold on the right meaning of rating. I am glad that you go by interests rather than choosing who has put up the topic. I do the same.

The star is very significant on my part, because it reflects how users of mylot rate me.. I'm just happy that i gained star from a 4th level.. On the other side, i don't prefer anyone's discussion here in our community. We are here to help other people solve their questions in life and at the same time, to earn. Yahh, you're right, the star couldn't accurately tells if the person is well educated or not. Some of the users can still inappropriately use mylot ratings. But it can be discovered by the admin. :D

I look at the star ratings, but it does not affect which discussions I respond to or get involved with. At the end of the day if there is a good discussion going on then I will just respond. I think I look at the star rating of other users more out of curiosity than anything else. The star ratings do not really fully reflect the person IMO. Sometimes if someone does not agree with you or you have a few responses in discussions that can be polarizing and all of a sudden your rating will drop. I remember that happened to me a few times when I was at myLot the last time I spent a lot of time here. If the discussions is good that trumps anyone's actual star rating to me.

There is no parameter to suggest what will trump up a rating. Despite putting up topics of substance ratings go down many a time. Having said that it would be best in the interest of all not to get bothered about it and with this attitude one can participate with full enthusiasm.

allknowing I do go to friends first, respond to whatever interests me then I hit hot and pick out what interests me and go on from there picking out those that inter3est me and that I can respond to with intelligence. My star rating and reputation do matter as our reputations are figured in with earnings in the my lot algorithm.as for stars its the contents of a discussions that draw me or send me away. a lot of low ratings also have made dozens of discussions in thirty minutes and they are not good mostly. I stay away from people who do that quantity thing as they lose good content by the number 20 disc usson they made.

That only those with low ratings put up countless topics is not quite correct. I have a few users who clutter my inbox with countless topics and those users are veterans here. Judging based on low ratings is not the way to go I feel.

The star rating system has no effect on whether I respond to a post. If I find a topic I enjoy, I respond. I do not respond to every topic that a friend posts either. I really do not care what my rating is. I just try to stay polite, and on topic. If I go up or down it is not the end of the world, and not something I would start a topic on...like "OMG, my star rating dropped again."

Its true there are lot of mylotters here who deserve it but not getting it.For me i go to "recent" tab and whatever discussion i find interesting there i respond.Recently i am not that much active here but always go through the discussions this way only.

Not their stars; but if I'm not familiar with the OP whom I'm interested to respond to, I'd like to check their profile to get some ideas who they are and to adjust my respond if necessary. If for some reasons I'm curious about their star status, I'd probably see some clues as well while checking the profiles. But the star alone has never really made me decide whether to respond or not.

I can understand checking one's profile if the responses call for first knowing about the user. But such instances are very few. Looking at the thousands of interests one does not have to know about any one here to be able to respond under those interests.
