Why Is Popcorn and Drinks So Expensive At The Movie Theatre?

June 30, 2012 6:20pm CST
I took my two grandsons to the movies today to see Madagascar 3. The movie was pretty good, but I almost fainted when I saw the price of popcorn and drink. Small popcorn-$3.75, small drink-$3.00. Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but I told them the next time we'll bring our own snacks from home. That was ridiculous.

In olden days watching film in theatre is so cheap comparing to todays expenditure. on those days no a/c in theatre.Today every theatre has a/c facilites.Peoples eyes watching film but their stomach didnot know they are watching film it is always asks something to give to it. So every people are purchasing something in the interval time of the film. They are eating as well as watching the film.Dual purpose is going on simultaneously.Determining the mentality of the people the owner of theatre increases the ticket price and the people who installed stall raising the price in all food items.

I think this is like the soft drinks and other snacks sold in the theme park. We all know that the price will be cheaper outside. But everything's price is expensive inside and this is how they can make more profit since there is no competition. And this is why I don't buy popcorn and drinks in the cinema. Besides, I want to focus on watching the movie as today the movie ticket is expensive. I love China

Unfortunately the movie theater only makes a profit off of the snacks and drinks they sell. The ticket price goes to the film company. By buying the snacks and drinks at the theater you are supporting the theater itself. I think it is a shame that they do not get any profits from the movie ticket sales but that is the way it is designed. I just found this out a few months ago and now if I go to the movies I try to always buy something. Normally we will get the large popcorn and drink combo (free refills) and share it.

Movie theatres are a thriving business. They know you come to see the movie and you wilo treat yourself to a snack to or two from the concession stand. Movie tickets are expensive enough but the snack can be just be just as ecpensive. The theeatre is there to make money and the movie goer will be the to help them out.

To answer your question, you have to think from the side of the boss of the cinema. If you are the owner of the cinema, you will obviously like to make as much money as possible. Like any other theme parks, tourist areas etc, the owners know that you must buy food from their restaurant as most of them don't allow you to bring your own food(unless you don't want to eat) and especially children like food in these places, therefore they just won't be afraid of setting extremely high prices for their foods as they are quite sure you will buy them eventhough they are expensive.

I hear you, I always sneak in food and drink from home as it is ludicrously over priced. It's for people that are desperate enough to pay that amount if they didn't bring their own. Going to the cinemas used to be a cheap past time but these days it can cost you $30 to $40 for everything. Even just a movie ticket here is $18 or more :(

Hi Misstee! Hollywood is got to get the money from somewhere to pay those $20 million dollar salaries actors are asking for! It always tickles me when my daughter and I go to the movies the cost of the snacks is always more than the ticket prices. I keep telling myself I'm not going to buy snacks anymore but I believe it's all part of that "movie experience". The movie was excellent though. Da da da da da da da da Afro da da da da da da da da circus Afro circus? Afro circus polka dot polka dot polka dot Afro. Cheers, Stan

the thing is that they are trying to get as much money out of as they possibly can plus, if you smuggle in popcord from home and you are caught, you can get tossed out of the theatre. hubby and i wait til the library has a movie and then we make our own popcorn. sure we have to wait, but it is way cheaper!

Well the short answer is because they can. They don't allow any outside food or drinks cause they're trying to milk an extra 10 bucks out of you in addition to the price of the ticket. There aren't any other ways to get snacks or drinks so you're stuck paying whatever ridiculous price they assign. My way around this is very baggy sweatpants capable of carrying whatever i'd like to enjoy in the theater.

Most of the money from ticket sales goes to the studio that made the movie. Theaters have to charge that much for concessions so they can cover their costs. That's why most of them won't allow outside food or drinks in--they want to maximize their concession stand's profits. My husband and I haven't been to see a movie since before our 2-year-old was born. We're planning to go see Brave later this week on his day off. We'll eat at home before we go to the theater, and we'll just get a large popcorn to share. The small costs less, but this theater gives free refills on the large size and they will let you bring the bag back on your next visit if you don't get it refilled on the day you buy it. They give out complementary cups of ice water so we'll totally skip buying drinks.

Oh I noticed it too. Maybe they just taking the oppurtunities to the movie goers that has no foods to bring in the movie house. I think maybe the rent of the place is quite high so they have to make their foods expensive lol.

I know it really is crazy. I have not been to a movie theater in a very long time, but they did over charge then for sure. I remember one drink was like four bucks. The theater here does not allow you to bring in your own snacks, but me and my man would sneak in a whole bunch of things in my big purse. It was fun.

It is a matter of simple economics, supply and demand. Once you are inside the theatre, there is not much competition in terms of food vendors, unless you are willing to venture out and drive to find other sources of food. They charge so much because they can get away with it.
