hey friend, for me both of them is okay to combine with delay effect, but i prefer to give much delay for distortion, it makes the sound more wide, :)

That is the two effect used by guitar player. A clean sound meant a normal guitar sound. When you heard a rock guitar sound, all the heavy sound, that is the sound either distortion or overdrive depend on which effect l they used. You can learn more about this sound by watching youtube video. There are a lot there. Wikipedia wouldn't help you understand this clearly as watching youtube video because it requires us to listen in order to understand it.

For me no matter what song I play I would prefer distortion with high gain. While I can suggest you to watch youtube video for you to know the sounds preferance, I would like you to do different thing. I suggest you to listen to guitar player which you love the tone most and study their guitar setting including their amp and effect they used. Another way is you can go to jamming studio, if there is available in your area, and experince the effect and amp they provide. See if it sounds good. If it is good, why don't follow their equipment setting.
