"I avoid XYZ ingredient" but you eat it later in the day?

I have a good friend who is an aspiring vegan. The other day she made a big fuss about how she wouldn't eat gelatin. Makes perfect sense since she is vegan. Anyway, she brought dessert to a party. This dessert had gelatin in it and she ate it.i asked her about why she ate the dessert, and she swore she didn't read the ingredients. To me , this doesn't make sense. As a vegetarian and someone sensitive to MSG, I read everything. Even before becoming a vegetarian I read labels. Why would she not read a label - especially on a dessert she brought. If you don't eat particular ingredients for any reason - dislike, allergy, ect - wouldn't you read ingredients for everything?

I would always read labels if I had food alergies or didn't eat certain things so it seems strange she didn't read the labels. Maybe she just says she doesn't eat things but really does for some strange reason?

I have no idea. I think she was in a rush, running late and grabbed whatever lol With purchased baked goods you really have to be careful too because you can't see what is in there.

Yep and it's not like she was buying a cart food of goods. I take a long time shopping if I buy premade items because I do read boxes and that extends my trip by quite some time I'm sure. Labels change so often, even on items you buy all them time.

Yeah that could of been it too. Hard to know the real answer but she should be more careful next time in any case. People these days even myself sometimes feels they are in a rush and don't have enough time but it only takes 30 seconds to stop and read and be sure it's OK

When ingredients are new to me, I keep on reading the labels. This will realy help in removing confusions about it. Maybe, even a vegan person can eat gelatin since it came mostly from agar, a sea weed. You are right, if you are really into strict diet, you will really read the labels and determine their content.

With the gelatin, you don't know the source. Some Kosher foods are made with agar, but even Kosher law allows gelatin from fish bones or beef skin. However, with regular foods, gelatin is derived from animal tendons.

you are right that gelatin might derive from animals too. Back to your question, what i can say is that, if you are really religously following the decision you made, like you want to be a vegan, you will really be curious about the food getting into your mouth if it really came from veggies or with some derivatives from animals.

Hi sedel. I am a vegan but not so called super strict vegan. What I mean is that I do not eat any animals products, but sometimes I buy supplements or medicines which are not vegan, when I do not have much choice. I buy only shoes made from artificial leather, textiles and such materials, but I still wear old leather shoes. I do not accept wasting and throwing out food or shoes or other things. I think that any person, regardless of diet he or she eats, can eat whatever he/she wants if that person suddenly decide to brake their own rules. It is not our thing to check what other people eat. If your friend calls herself a vegan and, not intentionally, eats by mistake some non vegan food it is her job to be worried about it, not yours or mina for example:) I think people are to quick to judge others. And I dislike that everywhere I go I have to tell about why I eat what I eat. And everyone is interested what I eat. I, like any other person, your friend too of course, have the right to decide by myself what to eat. I have the right to not eat something when I am offered even without giving reasons. And if your friend said she wouldn't eat gelatin and than, by mistake, she bought something with gelatin, it is her right to eat it. She decides and has the right not to be judged. I think people are weird. If someone is vegan and some day eats something not 100% vegan everyone is eager to judge it or to comment it. But when obese, not healthy people eats another steak or sausage they do not usually have to explain why they do that. In my opinion the fact that your friend at least tries to be a vegan is great, even though she is not 100% successed eating this way, but 99% she is. Many people, like me for example, are vegan due to health reasons. So if they decide to eat for example fish once a year it doesn't affect they health usually. Many people would say, that they are not vegans. I would say that they are, but they took one day holiday from beeing vegan. I am a vegan and I would recommend everyone this healthy diet, but if I were in situation like left alone in the jungle and then offered monkey meat from local people, I would propably eat it. Whould it be really wrong, if I had nothing to eat and starve? Of course when living in civilized country it is quite easy to stay vegan all the time, but not so easy like when you are a meat eater. I would suggest thinking less about other people choices and consider more your own decisions and activities. Are they always right? Have a nice day, jazgottt

hi sedel, for anyone who dosen't eat certain foods, why would they"forget" to read the ingredients..I think your friend is still aspiring...lol

Yep. Gelatin is one of those weird items that is usually made from animals ligaments. It can come for agar, but you never really know.
