Is the "Like" button effective?

Almost every little thing you see on the net that would require a yes or a no answer or opinion from someone who reads or come across it would see this little "Like" button. I was wondering if it's really effective especially if you see a big number beside or under it. Do people really like what they saw or learned? Or is it just a way of saying, "I saw that but I never really liked it at all" and clicking it would only mean that you don't have anything else to say or comment? What are your thoughts on this?

when some article is funny or incident is heart touching then I do press 'like' button.

The Like button is very effective if you have a lot of friends who are interested in that item or subject. Often times Facebook will share that you liked that page to your friends' news feed.

I press like button only when I really like an article or a piece of info. I feel like button is useful as an encouragement for the author.

I think the like button is very effective. It also can be used as a way of voting. i have seen many contests where your photo has to have the most likes. The picture with the most number of likes will get a prize. i think it is really cool that facebook made the like button. Very effective and cool! Happy mylotting.

I personally hit like button specially in Facebook just to let my friends to know i saw it.Not really because like it.Since i start find things about e-money they asked me to hit "LIKE" and get paid.Honestly speaking i had no idea what i marked liked :) that is the situation :) so i do not think like button is very good marker to get idea others really LIKE it or NOT :)Funny and fancy world,is not it :)

I feel like button is effective because if anyone saw an article with most likes then they take some interest and read the article if they are busy also but if an article with no interest they will just avoid it.. so I feel like button is effective and have importance..
