Charlie Chaplin was a famous comedic star in the early 1900 era of silent films. He once said: "I always like walking in the rain, so no one can see my crying." That quote always makes me sad. Your thoughts?

Ah yes. I remember this. I've a collection of Chaplin's works. He was a genius. There's greater depth in the quote, I believe. Its like, when we are sad, when we feel like crying, there's hardly a soul who comes to comfort us. Especially in today's world. Everyone is so busy, jostling with their own problems that they find it difficult to solve others' troubles. So the best thing to do is fight your own problem and cry, when no one can see you. Since even if they see you, they won't be helping you, instead talk behind your back, making your miseries magnify. Chaplin also once said, that he masks his sadness by making people laugh. Many don't know that in personal life he was not a very happy person. There were many factors behind it. But he always managed to put a smile on others face, as the show must go on. Do your duty, no matter what. As the people are only interested with the services you provide, and not with the sad face behind the smile. Thus, whenever you see rain, walk into it and relief yourself by crying. Good day!

Well, Charlie Chaplin was such an iconic comedic personality, that it really would seem odd to have seen him cry. However, he also was a human being much like you and I and that does mean that he experienced the full range of emotions that we experience in our lives. The thing about that quote that makes me sad is just that it sort of makes it sound like he didn't feel like people really considered him to be a person outside of the character that he played in his work.

Most happy people (comedians included) have a sad past. Someone once told me before that happy poets make the sad poems and sad poets write the happy ones. Don't know why. Perhaps it is to cope with the sadness.

It does make you sad. It just means that he has some sadness to him that he likes no one to see. That is why he cries when he's in the rain... so others won't notice his sadness.
