Leaving your Dog in a Boiling Hot Car...While you get Groceries....

I have not witnessed first hand any situation where a dog is left in a hot car panting with no windows down or anything, however I hear about it on the news a lot during the summer months. Do you ever see this situation when you're out and about? Do they have strict laws pertaining to this where you live? How do you feel about it? Thanks for commenting.

When it comes to me and my pets, I tend to think that if it is something that I wouldn't do to my kids, then it would be something that I would not do to my pets. So, this means that I will not leave my dogs in the car while I am going into the store to do my grocery shopping. In fact, I don't even like to leave the dogs in the car for even a moment when I am taking care of a chore. Last week I needed to run to the bank and I also had to pay my car insurance and Paul insisted that we take Jasmine with us. I felt terrible about the two minutes that I left her in the car when I was in the bank and then the five minutes that I left her in the car while I was at the insurance agent's office.

The fact that you felt guilty just shows how much love you have for Jasmine. Thanks for commenting.

Hello my friend Jshean20 Ji, I might not remember about dogs, but some yrs back one professor left his son while he went for lecture and after three - four hrs, child condition was so bad that he was removed to ICU, recently in our Capitol Delhi, Traffic police pulled a car voilating traffic rules with a child, who was left locked to buy some medicines. Why such negligence. Dogs too should not be left like this. May God bless You and have a great time

I have to wonder what that person was thinking. Did he just not care or was his mind completely somewhere else that he totally forgot there was a kid back there. Either way, it's sad.

Hello my friend Jshean20 Ji, Well, I conclude taht people hjave least relations with their KINS and KITHS. They are totally sleepless and as well as peaceless. It is the effect of present way of living. Everything is by the way. Parenting has become joke. I may be excused for language I am using, but this is truth when I view from this peak of my old age. May God bless You and have a great time

I have witnessed this, waited for the person and said something every time. If I waited for more than a few min I called the police. The laws here are strict and unfortunately people don't get it ~ I also have seen cars with children in them...which has been an immediate phone call. I don't understand how some can be so stupid! Personally , my dog love to go on rides ~ however why do people take their animals to fairs, local baseball games, parades, or shopping (i say shopping but i should say sit in the car) etc? Makes no sense to me....

I think it might be lack of common sense that causes this, it's hard to say. I understand dogs are part of the family so treat them that way, you wouldn't want to be cooped up in a vehicle barely able to breath and gasping for your life so don't do it to your dog.

dogs are not suppose to be lest alone in a car... it's the same as humans... i mean if you leave someone inside they might suffer heatstroke. specially that car has a different humidity considering that it's closed and insulated.

no we don't bring pets... well we have laws that protect the animals... we just don't want to be fined and go to prison over a pet... it humiliating. and most of us here love our pets... i always see people walk their pets to the parks... the government is supporting vaccines for dogs too.

You'd be shock that there are people who even leave their kids inside their cars. it's sick. Maybe owners bring them along because the pet has issues about being left at home, I don't know, but the bottom line is they shouldn't leave their pets unattended, especially inside a smelting hot car!

I cannot think of any issue extreme enough that it would be worth dragging the dog along in the car on a hot day, people need to think and they don't half the time!

You should watch the Dog Whisperer in National Geographic. There was a dog there that trashes the house when left alone

It happens once when I was visiting my grandparents. They used to live near a church and that day it was a wedding ceremony. Some stupid dog owner was taking part into that ceremony but he forgot his dog closed inside his car. Luckily, he left a window half opened so I put the leash on the poor dog and took him out. I gave him plenty of water to drink and just sat there with the dog along me, until the ceremony was over. The stupid dog owner didn't even thank to me for saving his dog's life. He didn't realize how he put his dog's life in danger. I explained to him that he should never repeat that mistake but he didn't seem too convinced.

Good job for being so kind. The owner probably was so embarrassed that he let that happen and that's why he wasn't able to thank you because the embarassment was overwhelming.

It comes under Animal Cruelty legislation where it exists..Some people are dumb enough to do this with Children OR Animals, and I'd have no sympathy for the perp with whatever penalties would be given as a result..

I am appalled at the action taken by some of the dog owners, but looking at it from another angle, may be some of these dufus owners have never try roasted dog meat in their entire life, so i like to assume they had done what they are doing in a very hot summer day in order to get it. Yes, there is law governing leaving pet and baby in the car without proper ventilation in my state, but since no one really care about it as there is no enforcement crew checking on every park vehicle under a hot summer sun, or the animal abuse agency employees are too lazy to bust their as* in a hot day for the sake of those helpless animals, pet owners could care less either to act in a proper manner.

Not that this makes it OK, but I don't think these people are intentionally hurting their animals, it's just like they lose common sense in certain situations or they never had any to begin with.

Unfortunately this is something that I see all too often during the summer and really all year long. There is never a time that I go to the grocery store where I don't see at least one dog left inside a car. It has been proven that leaving children inside boiling hot cars can cause them to die so it should be understood that the same would be true for any living creature. I'm surprised that there haven't been laws that have been passed against leaving animals in cars like this.

I do not think people should take the pets with them if they are going to shop and know they are leaving them in the car. They should leave them at home. or else where comfortable. It has happened in some areas around here and it upsets me to hear about bad things like that if they are to be gone long. The law can be pushed forward if more people take noticed . Sometimes people overlook the needs that really need to be met...

Yes some people do overlook the needs that need to be met or they turn a blind eye and act like nothing happened.

I personally have not seen any like this. I don't know how exactly I would respond. I might wait or I might call animal protection service, who knows. During summer months, one could just leave his/her dog at home while going for grocery shopping, running errands, etc. If this person needs to stop by at a store, common sense should tell this person to roll down a window a little bit. Whoever this person is, should not leave the car for too long. In the case of leaving a dog without rolling down any window, whoever is responsible, would already have some issues. He/she might be homeless, not thinking clearly, or have other issues. Somehow, there are irresponsible owners among us.

I don't understand it either, I have to wonder if maybe they just don't have common sense at that moment in time.

I thought most people knew better than to do this with their animals or dogs in general who are mostly in the cars. But every once in awhile you do hear of a dumb person doing this to their beloved pet and it makes me sick. I hope I never witness it and if I ever do you would be right to think I would report them and their license plate to the local authorities. We have strict rules on that in the USA. And so they should, it is very cruel to do that. It will kill your pet and in a very inhumane kind of way.

I've noticed that this discussion has also brought up the topic of people leaving their kids in the car! This is something I've never witnessed personally, but this is also crazy.

Hi jshean, Like you I haven't witnessed this but have heard a lot about it in the news, and I think it is terrible. There are strict laws here about such things, but apparently it still happens. Such people should not be allowed to have pets. Blessings.

When I was working in a hospital,we saw a dog left in a car in the heat.everybody was very upset, because the windows were closed and the dog was suffering. Finally some body managed to break in the car,and we hot the dog out and gave him some water!I do not know what happened when The person came back to the car, because my working hours were over, but I think that the others called the SPCA,and gave a good talking to the owner of the dog.People like that should not have dogs. And to think, that there are parents that leave their kids in the car.....

I did it myself about 2 months ago : I took my dog in the car and I turned on the air conditioner. The air got cooler , at least for me. I opened the window to let the wind come in. When we got to the bank , I had to lock the dog in the car but I let the air conditioner open for one more minute to cool the air. I left one of the windows open a little bit and turned off the air conditioner , I turned off the car and left for less than 10 minutes. When I came back to the car , my dog was hot like he ran a marathon. He needed cool air immediately , so I just took him outside of the car and took him for a short walk. I don't understand how come dogs get hot so fast. The air was probably too hot for just cooling the dog through breathing...His tongue was so wide and wet. :( He was so desperate for cool air and water , I could hear some howl in his breathing. I am never going to do that again.

Hi Jshean20! I'm a big fan of dogs, I got three of them. So far, I have never seen anyone who leaves his dogs on his car. In our place, people goes to the mall with their dogs, even does the groceries with them. There is such a mall here who allow pets as long as they are leashed. I haven't heard any laws about leaving a dog in hot car, it's common sense not to do it. Pet owners should take full responsibility, dogs are family and should be treated that way. Kudos!
