I am moving next month. Its a lot of work getting ready to move, amazed at how many things (places) one has to notify about a change of address! I am very excited about this move. I am moving from Saskatchewan to he NWT. A big change and i will miss my family but i think that this is a wonderful step in growing up and having a fulfilling job and life. any tips and suggestions on moving? or packing?

Moving is very stressful and not fun. Our family has moved recently and we realized it is a lot of work and stressful especially I was pregnant and we have a toddler. We had moving company packed for us so we didn't have to worry about that, mostly we just had to worry about when the car get shipped and when our stuff will arrive at the destination etc. I was very pregnant at that point so all I did was taking care of my little one and tried not to do too much to hurt myself.

I've packed and unpacked a lot. The thing I can suggest is to make a list of things that you'll need when unpacking and things you want to pack together etc. You could write these things on the box in a marker, or you could go down to walmart (since it's back to school EVERYWHERE) and get a cheap pack of notebook paper. Take said cheap pack of notebook paper and some tape and write down everything that's in the box after you are done. For instance, write "kitchen" at the top on the biggest part of the white space of paper, then write what's in said box. Be sure to write fragile if it's fragile. Everytime I've packed and moved, it's been trash bags! I have a lot more stuff, fragile stuff even now so I can't do that the next time I move.

Thats an awesome idea. I forgot about the fragile stuff being marked. I have about 50 glass dolls to be packed and i'd hate for them to be broken. I plan on using bags for things like bedding and winter clothing.

i would suggest you get rid of stuff that you don't need or haven't looked at for a number of years; like clothes you don't wear or don't fit into anymore and the like. this way you have less stuff to move.

I've been doing very well with getting rid of clothing and stuff i dont need. Been carefully weeding out things i dont wear or fit over the last year when i realized i had WAY tooo many clothes. Sucessfully have sold several bags of clothing through a group on facebook...and donated some as well.

I have been packing up items lately that are in my room. I have been looking at houses to buy and its taking a lot longer than what i wanted but i dont want to move into a house im not intrested in as well and dont like. I have been packing up things in paperbags and big bags i have gotten at stores and i have also used some boxes from work that i have had. I dont overfill the boxes to the point that i cant pick them up or that they will break. I fille up a little paperback yesterday of paperwork and cards and it was getting heavy so i stopped and that was the only thing i packed up yesterday because i didnt have any boxes to or i would have gotten stuff down from my closet and packed up some of that in boxes, but i do need to take a break becasue i am running out of room to pack things up in and i need to find a house to bring this stuff too.

Makes sense not to over fill boxes. I had a couple boxes with photo albums that i didnt want to over fill and make to heavy so to make it so things wouldnt shift i packed a set of sheets in it. Good luck with your house hunting.

I think you probably have everything under control. Could you drive to see your parents sometimes? Would it take more than a day for travel? I wouldn't want to move away from family ever. I'm not very adventurous. About tips: I guess label everything well. Things you need right away should also be labeled. I think it takes a bit of strategy to place the boxes too.

My dad passed away a couple years ago. My mom...I'll be able to see once in a while - the trip home will be a 13.5 hour drive. My sisters all live within an hour of my mom. Grandparents to see them would be a 18 hour drive from what i understand. But i already have plans to go home at christmas time. They are planning to come visit in the summer as well.

I am sure that the move will be good for you :) i am also moving here in the next month. we put the deposit down on the place yesturday and i am extremely excited about getting out of the area tha i am in. we have had a lot of problems with the land lord here. for me when i start packing i am going to try and find as many boxes or tubs that i can so that i can put each thing in its own box. then i can label it and when i get to the new house i will know exactly where it goes. i am making sure all the laundry is caught up. making sure all he kids brokem toys ae thrown away. i am also throwing out a lot of things that we do not need or use anymore so the move will go much smoother and i will not have to do it all later on at the new house. It is like a fresh new start and i want it to be a great one and not have all these little projects i need to get to dealing with going thro my stuff and all the important papers. I hope your move goes as smoothly and as good as it can :) i am still working on changing the address withso many places to lol it is a pain but well worth it in the end :)

I agree it feels like a fresh start. In someways i think people should move once in a while...staying in the same place for generations families can build up alot of junk!

Moving is quite expensive. Especially if you have to hire movers!

we have been living where we are at for 5 years now and i can agree 100% on the fact that we have built up a lot and i mean a lot of junk we have so much that we have to go thro but we decided to go thro it all where we are so when we start unpacking at the new house i will not hve to go thro it later. sometimes people need a new place a new enviroment and all that just to get over the hurdles in their life and to start over. I agree people should get the chance to move more often but the cost of living has gone up so much through out the years that is is ridiculous and it makes it harder on the ones who really want to better thei lives and get their family in a safe home.

hi saundyl I hope you are moving to a real great location,. When you pack do the necessities last so they can be the first things' you unpack like food and pots and pans. other than that do weed out things you never use.every time we had moved we moved stuff that should have been tossed out.It just makes so much more work and sooner or later those things will have to be tossed out.Get plenty of sleep and have some relax time so you do not get stressed out on moving.I finally made a list of all the places we had to notify about our move.also please label boxes for the places they go to for example bedroom one,two etc, dining room, kitchen, bathroom etc. sure helps to save time and frustration,.I always dreaded moving as it was such a big chore.on the lists of top stressors divorce and moving were the top; ones.

good day saundyl, how i love to say that as well. as i am looking forward to move out from here. as i am not that comfortable living together with my family especially that me and my brother got some arguments and misunderstanding. hence the reason why i am really working hard to earn more so that i can able to have some money to pay rent and other expenses.

I think it will be too good to label you suit case and all your bags with your name and you address on it. So that it cannot be exchanged with the other bag which are identical to it. Before locking your bags make sure that you had took all the important things needed for you. Finally be careful and avoid your journey during dark time. It is the time where dangers are hidden. All the very best.

Hello there! I can tell you that when you move out you need lots of good square boxes. They are easy to carry , and yes the change of address is one I don't like on top of packing up, but when you want to get somewhere. One thing I regret a lot is because I'm not close to my family and not able to visit a lot ( money ). Well I miss them all. I am at an age that I need to be closer to them. When you are young you want to see the world and it is " Wow " to be far from everybody you know but when you grow older it wares off thin, once you've proven that you can take care of yourself you know ,not a need to be that far anymore, because you'll feel lonely even if you have your family.
