I've been look forward to a tutorial book of basic writing . I found this book and I admit that it is easily learnt. But , I find that there are some of the subjects he talked about is different than what I've been taught at school before. The book was published at 1918 (I know , it sounds so archaic !) , it was written by Strunk Jr,William .. So, my question is - Have you ever read this book? Is there any subjects in the book that unapplicable anymore nowdays? (And anyway, if there is some mistakes on my statements above please correct me ) Thanks

I read that book sometime ago, but unlike you, my intention was to learn how to edit. I found the book useful and applicable even until today, despite its age. The book lays the foundation of grammar, and most editors refer to this classic for guidance. When it comes to writing, though, the book is not ideal. You can find a host of useful resources for writing online. Just do your research. I recently wrote about "12 tips on effective writing." This article tackles the basic writing errors most authors make and gives guidance on what makes up effective writing. This is a must-read, I tell you. When you read other resources online, you will given general ideas about what good writing is. What you need at this point is the basics of good writing. You should study about more advanced writing techniques later. The link is here: http://sergspogi.hubpages.com/hub/12-Tips-on-Effective-Writing

okay - the book is still valid, but with a grain of salt... You do have to be aware that dialog can throw all the rules out the window, you want people to sound like they exist in this world, not 100 years ago. I've seen and looked through the book, by William Strunk, in fact its often called Strunk's Elements of Style, and still considered one of the best books on the subject. Just because a book is nearly 100 years old doesn't make it any less valid. Most people, however, would not agree its an easy read (long on information, short on plot ). You certainly could do a lot worse than Strunk's book to help learn to write.

Well, I already downloaded the book in PDF format and took a quicly review on its pages. I find the book really interesting and helpful for someone who wants to improve his writing skills. Despite that the book almost a century ago was published I think that it can help you.

Hi Juliyan As you suggest, such an archaic book as this one will be largely out-of-date. I would recommend a much more recent book -or even a revised version of classics such as Fowler's English Usage, or similar. Your English grammar seems to be good. The only corrections I would suggest that you could make to your statement are: 'Are (instead of 'is') there any subjects in the book.... ('are' relates to the plural -as in 'subjects'- as opposed to 'is' -which relates to singular- which would be 'subject'). The same sentence should also contain an 'are' between 'that' and 'unapplicable' (should maybe better to put 'not applicable'). Finally, I would write 'if there ARE some mistakes' instead of 'if there IS some mistakes'for similar reasons explained earlier. I hope that this helps. Have a great day!
