Whenever I start using the Internet, the modem of the broadband connection gets extremely heated. Can you postulate the reason of such heat production and suggest any remedy for it?

Usually it is the power adapter that gets warm not the modem itself. Also it should only be warm and not hot.

Would it harm my computer or modem in any way? How can I get rid of it?

Yes, my modem is external; so as you say I must not be worried for any adverse effect on my computer. I am going to lodge a complain with BSNL very soon. Thanks a lot for making me relieved from a tension.

I believe you modem is external so it should not affect your computer in anyway. Since the modem is provided by your service provider, you can ask them to check if it is faulty. Also since you know it is hot, do not place near anything flammable (that can easily catch fire).

I think if you are using direct connection modem install by the internet provider. You need to request replace before anything else might be going to more trouble. That modem might have a shorted connection inside. So, your modem will soon be defected or might be burn up.

Yup! You need to report that trouble for them to resolve your problem. If you can't report that happen into your modem. There might chances that modem create more annoying things in your connection.

I am using modem installed by BSNL, the internet provider for me. Earlier it never got heated, it is a recent problem. Should I contact with BSNL?

Yep, they do get hot the same as computers. But if they get really hot then try to get a can of compressed air and blow through the ventilation slots. There could be a build-up of dust. It is always a good idea to take the side off a desktop or the back off a laptop and blow away the build-up of dust round the cpu cooling fins or heat sink on a laptop. Static electricity attracts the dust - nothing to do with how clean your house is!

I would follow your instructions. But let me know whether the high heat generated has any adverse effect on my computer.

hi I have a desktop and when modem gets hot its usually because there is trouble on the cable and the cable light starts flashing and usually you will then go off internet till the problem es solved .other ways modem could be hot is a hot day in a hot room with no wind or circulation. when mine gets warm I turn on the air conditioner at once and lately its been too hot here in Southern calif so just the moment the room feels a bit too warm I t urn on the air conditioner.if you do not have AC a large box fan turned to blow directly on computer and modem and router if you have one will =keep everything cool.

I have never noticed the cable light to start flashing. It occurs irrespective of a hot day or cold day and even after I turn on the air conditioner.

Apart from ensuring good ventilation, I place an empty tin can on top of the modem. This helps in the cooling process. Usually I have my modem switched on 24/7 since there are many Internet users in the house.
