Recently we had our first mob dancing in our city. It happened in the biggest mall but I thought it did not have the real essence of mob dance because dance groups were tapped to start the dancing. So many dance groups joined but the people in the mall just stood to watch. It was like a program of dances because the dancers had choreographed dance steps and people just stood by to watch. I thought mob dancing would involve everyone in the mall. However, this did not happen. Only the dancers who were invited to dance were seen dancing. What do you think?

I didn't know that bystanders were expected to take part. That's great if it's so. I don't think it is but I'm not sure. But apparently the people at the mall weren't aware either or were too happy to watch the dancers. I don't know what I would do. I'd want to dance with them but also I'd want to stand and watch. It's wonderful to see. I've never experienced it in person, only on video. Come to think of it, in the videos I saw only the dancers were dancing. The spectators did not. Mob dancing is a great idea. I don't know who started it.

I dont think that usually bystanders join. These are actually planned well in advance. Some flash mobs might allow onlookers to join. But to get in sync with those guys would be difficult.

yeah i don't think that they should be a part of the mod... mob dance is just like the world is a stage type of concept... so still you will need some audience. but it's just great that the spirit of the mod is about bringing people together. hope you will enjoy dancing!

Sounds fun, I love dancing This sounds like the type of thing that was arranged way ahead of time, it had to be. I'm sure the dancers have to get permission from the mall authorities so that the authorities can let the merchants (who sell stuff at the mall) know that there is going to be a small disruption in sales for a period of time. I would love to see this type of thing break out in a mall when I'm there shopping!

Hey not at all. I think most of the time, they dont get any permission and stuff. It depends on who organizes it. If the mall is organizing, then its fine. But actually nobody says no to it, this is a form of entertainment for all. Also it hardly spans for less than five minutes.

It is a break from the usual mall activities. People are surprised to see this happening all of a sudden. In my case, I wouldn't to just stand there. I would probably dance too if I were in the situation.

cutie I d o nt think they wanted the crowd watching as these were all talented pros and there are also rules in places like malls that might not want too huge a crowd to be dancing in case someone gets hurt by amateurs dancing that do not know the steps or the choreography

I would say in most of the flash mobs, it would be amateurs only. These people gather through facebook and stuff, practice for few days and put up a show. It might be for the promotion for an event or may be just for fun. Whatever it is , its fun watching these people dance. they do put in a committed effort.

I think you have a given a near perfect definition for the term. Off late there has been no much news about any mob dancing. The most important thing in most of the cases, the dancers involved would be amateurs and not professionals.

As amazing as it would be to have the entire mall join in the dancing, how can you expect all these strangers to not only know the choreography, but be expected to perform it, and perform it well? Not everyone has the same dance skills, people would get hurt, and no one but the dancers would even know the choreography to begin with! Haha. But I would love to see, or even better: be involved, a mob dancing. That sure would be an experience to talk about!

As you mentioned, it would be hard for everyone to join the dance. But there would be a lot of people with flair in dancing and they can just pick the steps. And if you had noticed, most of the dance steps in flash mobs are simple and peppy ones. It is not impossible to follow their steps and perform at the same time.

This reminds me of the movie Step Up 4 where a group of talented dancers, they call their group "The MOB", would just appear out of nowhere and they will amazed the people of their short predetermined and well-choreographed dance and right after they will quickly disappear. So, I guess mob dancing does not include the audience because their purpose is to amuse and confuse the people.
