I like to look at a travel guide book that is helpful for independent travelers. I check the accommodation listings to get an idea of how affordable it is. I look at a map and plan my route with the different places I am intending to visit. I check out the expected weather. I look at transport timetables. I am so happy to read about the culture and the local people's customs.

Hi,maximax!I think you are a good traveler and a outgoing person! You are careful and have a love for traveling indeed. I hardly pay attention to weather and transport timetable so I always suffer. But when I talk about the culture and the history with local friends I'm always happy!Thank you for sharing your methods and experience!

I'd definitely start with doing a little online research just so I know the dos and don'ts. Once I'm there, I'd usually ask around and get to know the people. Usually, I'd begin by asking the receptionists or the hotel staff. Sometimes, I also try conversing with the waiters or some taxi guy. It's nice to talk to people and understand the culture that way. The complex stuff like history follow eventually. You can always learn the best and cheapest spots from the locals. The weather can always be checked out online. The economy can be assessed through comparing their products' cost. It's just a matter of having fun wherever you may go.

hey thanks a ton for such a nice discussion. Well before traveling to a new place or a country, i make it a point to collect information regarding the different historic famous places of that country and their tradition. This will help us where to move and what all we are supposed to see in that country. Besides, a deep research on their tradition will always help us to have a deep understanding of the local people. What say?

I agree with you. It can be a important and effective way to understand a new place. If I know this country's history and tradition, I'll have a clearer idea what I'm doing and seeing in this country, and be more confident to communicate with the local people. Thus, know more about the country and feel it is a worthy trip.So I always do the same things as you.
