Chewing Gum - The World's Menace

Personally, I cannot stand the stuff. The very idea of chewing something and your stomach thinks, "Right, am I about to get some food in here now? No? Well, I shall carry on rumbling then!" is crazy to me. Oh, and don't get me started on the mess that people leave because they cannot be bothered wrapping a chewed piece up and throw it in the bin - so they spit it out onto the ground instead. Sometimes, INDOORS! Gross! I reckon there is a bigger problem with chewing-gum than cigarette butts as smoking is banned in many areas now..but chewing gum isn't. These same people making the mess complain to the Council at areas not being cleaned properly. Well, they're not being cleaned because they have ran out of money and they have ran out of money BECAUSE THERE IS TOO MUCH CHEWING GUM LEFT ON THE GROUND TO CLEAR UP. Get a grip! Well, if they ever bring out Chewing Gum Police I'll be top of the list of new recruits!

Um..did you like, just step in gum 5 minutes before you started this discussion? Actually, I don't chew gum....anymore. Haven't since I was in high school. Well, that's not quite true. Somewhere along the line, maybe in my early 20's, I started swallowing it. Not sure how that came about. I always liked the taste of certain gums and one day I was chewing and busy doing stuff. The next thing I knew the gum was gone. I realized I must have swallowed it. After that it kept happening. I didn't chew it a lot but every time I did I tried to make a conscious effort not to swallow it. But sooner or later you have to do something besides sitting and concentrating on your gum chewing. Like cooking dinner, going shopping, running errands, you know, getting on with your life. And all of a sudden it's gone. I don't think it's bad for you to swallow it, at least not in excess. So I just stopped. But I remember in the late 50's it used to be all underneath the seats in movie theaters, tables, chairs and counters in restaurants, everywhere. Yech. But laying in a blob on the sidewalk in the hot sun is the worst. Actually, stepping in it is the worst. I never realized so many people didn't appreciate chewing gum.

I've heard that if you swallow enough chewing gum (over time) it causes gastric problems. That might be why so many people throw it out..but they should be throwing it into bins or taking it home in its wrapper..anything other than leaving it underneath tables or spitting it out onto floors and pavements. By the way, I hadn't just stepped in some gum but I have done in the past lol.

I can feel my blood boiling again lol. Chewing gum has to be the biggest waste of time and money ever invented..I wish another use could be found for it, I really do!

I think practically everyone has stepped in gum at least once. It's the worst with sneakers that have all that texture and grooves and things on the soles. And you're right - proper disposal, please!!!

I actually feel that chewing gum helps reduce my appetite. For some people the chewing action is very relaxing, but for pete's sake, they all need to clean up their mess. That and dog poo too.

Does your tummy not think there is food coming its way? That's what used to happen to me so I stopped chewing it. The dog poo thing actually puts me off having a dog. I admire people who pooper scoop it all up but then it all goes in their pocket because there is no bin to put it in and they have to wait until they get home. Mind you, that's much better than just leaving the poo there for someone to walk in.

Agree with you totally. I started a topic a few years ago about chewing gum and ranting about it. In a town near me they had so many problems with gum on the floor that they started putting boards up for you ot stick your gum to when you had finished with it. The boards look awful with all thje chewed gum stuck to it BUT so much better than the gum getting stuck to your shoes.

Yes, I believe these boards can get full of the stuff from what I've read. Does it get recycled?

Years ago I had a spell of chewing Bubble Gum. Absolutely loved the stuff. I made the mistake of blowing the biggest bubble in the world (at least to me), it popped and it all went in my hair. Mum wasn't impressed, as you can imagine and I'm sure she ended up cutting my hair in order to get all the gum out. I've dabbled in it a bit since but nowhere near on the same scale..and if I want something minty I go for Fox's Glacier Mints instead lol.

Chewing gum being chewed by a person loud with their mouth open, er yuk, why can they not keep their mouth shut to chew. Seeing it stuck in your carpets and mats all because you have stood in some that a person has spat on the floor. Pet hate is a under statement I would say.

That's one of my "pet peeves" about people chewing gum, jugsjugs is that they chew with their mouth open and making noises!

I can't believe that part about it being cleaned up and stuff like that. Is that real? If so yes they sure do need to ' get a grip '. I agree with you that chewing gum is pretty disgusting. I can't stand to chew the stuff. I don't like the texture of it and I don't see the point. I don't get anything out of it except a sore jaw! Those whom smoke I guess maybe I can see that as a habit supresser while at work. But at least have the decency to do away with it properly. We don't want to step in your disgusting chewing gum! Plus some people are rude and don't close their mouths while chewing. Gag!

People moan about everything in this City so it wouldn't surprise me at all if they rang the Council and demanded to know when their next big clean is (they have a big enough job mopping up after the night-time revellers at weekends) but they fail to realise it's THEM, the people who are making all this mess. That's why I said they should 'get a grip.' Niquitine gum, yes, I bet that's yummy...NOT!

That does not surprise me much either about ' the people '. Most groups of people are ridiculous like that. Always demanding something when they are either the cause of it or they do not deserve it to begin with. Yeah I always wondered what that niqutitine tastes like. Not enough to try it though!

i agree. the nastiest thing is to step in chewing gum (especially in the summer when its soft and gooey, yuck!) my daughter, however, loves the stuff but i do make sure she throws it out in the garbage and she is very good at doing it (of course, she is 19 and knows better!)

Would make very good glue!!! When I was at school and we still had desks with lids that what some people did, use the gum to stick the lids down!!!! Many times I got it on my school skirt as people also stuck it under the desks

I often wonder what could be made out of the gum? I know there are gummy bins in some towns and cities (that's made into allsorts of things, including funky garden furniture would you believe) but it's a shame the gum has to be chewing gum in the first place, if you get my meaning..or not. Haha!

It is so gross to be walking along abd have someones chewed up spit out gum stuck to your shoe. I rarely chew gum but when I do when.I finish it goes right in the trash. I hate when people are so disgusting they stick their gum to the underside of a table. It makes me so grossed out I lose my appetite. Eww also I know people who chew gum and when its time to eat they will put it on their plate to chew again after they are done eating. I will never let my kids do that.

I know about the first two (ground and table) but putting gum on the side of a plate, then eating it after a meal..well, that's a new one on me and it would gross me out as well if I witnessed that behaviour.

hijaney lost m y whole response copy paste,. about chewing gum I went back to c ollege in my fifties to g et m y degree BA in English. My professor asked m e to read a paper I had written that he graded as an A,. I went to stand up and heard s snicker. to my horror I had sat down on a huge wad of chewing gum on my chair.the professor sent for some ice and she helped me to g et most of it off my skirt,. a brand new dress I had worn especially for that day.She let me sit down and read my p aper aloud to the class,.Everyone cla pped so I felt good about that at least.,' I had to have the dress dry cleaned and it came out really nice. So I am not t oo happy abou t where people leave their chewing'gum.

Have you seen the people who get in front of a television camera and still have the gum going a mile a minute?? Looks gross, huh? Puts me off every time. I've always likened it to watching a cow chewing a cud. I saw a US legislator on tv recently who was chewing gum. I would think that it would just be a courtesy to trash the gum before getting in front of the audience. Just common sense. I've had to work with these thoughtless people too. Sitting at a computer trying to concentrate on my work and the worker in the room chewing and popping gum. That is just so distracting. I can't believe that they do not know they are creating a negative atmosphere.

Yesterday I saw a speech made by the Labour Party Leader Ed Miliband and the cameras kept panning over to the audiences' reaction. In that audience was a guy chewing gum and it annoyed me every time the camera went on him. I, too, would be distracted if someone next to me at work was chewing and popping gum as you described. You must have nerves of steel to put up with that.

As far as i know Singapore does not allow gums or chewing it in public areas. I also do not like chewing gums and yes there are some who could not even throw it properly.

Ooh, let's hope it catches on. After all, smoking is banned in public areas in quite a few countries now, the same should apply to chewing gum. Horrible stuff!

I thought I was one of the few people whjo did not like gum, but it seems there are more people like me. In fact, none of the people I know chew gum. I don`t like to step on a gum or touch a table with a gum stuck under it or even see people take gum out of their mouths and put it away. I think it`s grosse. It might be cultural though. I don`t think that there are so many gum chewers in my country, not even children.

I am with you on this Jane. Chewing gum is horrible stuff. It pollutes the environment everywhere in cities and is toxic crap to be chewing too. Not at all healthy for us or the environment. Maybe you should start a movement, create a Facebook page, Twitter account and everything else social and get the debate raging. Lets get this stuff banned!

There may be an epetition already but I've not checked. The public have already scored a small victory for Virgin Trains (long story about a franchise they lost and fans of the company have been campaigning to get it all reviewed..and it is) so we do have a voice on the internet after all. I do have a Twitter account as well..but I give Facebook a wide berth as you know.

I never chew it even if it is said it does our teeth some good and even some said it has a preventative effect against infection by influenza virus. It is actually not a problem if everyone who chews gum wrapps the dregs up and throws it in the bin self-consciously rather than spitting it everywhere. After all It has no second-hand smoke problem as the smoking has. However It is just our own wishful thinking because there are all kinds of people in real life.

I can remember this being a major issue at one time, but I have n encountered chewing gum for a long time now. It was very popular when I was a child, but I was not very fond of it eve back then and never considered actually buying the stuff.
