Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it

My father was talking to me the other day about the situation in ou country right now. People have been fooled and voted for an extreme neo-nazi party in Greece. Members of this party attack immigrants and cause all kinds of trouble. He was telling me that the situation right now (all this confusion) is the same as it was when the dictatorship of the 21st April of 1967 started and he is afraid something similar might happen. I can't believe that our nation that was so much tortured by the nazis, saw the hope of change in a neo-nazi party. It is like they ignore the scars all over the country that are still visible after 70 years.

I don't know how government is in Greece, so I'm just going with "self-evident truth" here. America's Founding Fathers noted that democracy-unchecked was liable to devolve into 'mob-ocracy'---and 'election by popular vote' seems to have done just that. (That's the main reason I'm not watching the Presidential debate right now---because Presidential debates should be more-appropriately called 'mob-gathering exercises' ... as seen in Robin Williams' Man of the Year.) But the 'self-evident truth' BEHIND 'election by popular vote' is that each person knows what's right. That's why soldiers are trained to follow orders without question: because their commanders have a good purpose in mind, but require the soldiers to do a lot of things that seem wrong. The only power most leaders today have (by themselves) is the power of media---the power to promote their intentions & suggestions etc. The true power remains in every citizen's hands to either conform or refuse.

No, I've never seen that movie. The point I was making was that politicians are only mouth-pieces. Besides, I don't think "voting for 'none of the above'" would change the fact that the people who take/are-given the power are going to get the power. Look at Oklahoma & President Barack Obama: EVERY COUNTY IN OKLAHOMA voted Republican in both elections, and yet we weren't 'kicked outta the country' when Obama won anyway!

So the big spender is gone, now people in your country begin to embrace Neo-nazi party as new beginning for Greece. It seem like they already forgotten the pain from the past and want to relive the same thing all over again AFTER 70 years. It definitely is a bad choice Greek choose to have the same political party that left Germany in the world history book of shame .

They are not actually stupid, they by and large are deceitful and horrendous little beings whose leader usually has many tricks up inside his sleeve, and is very capable in playing up deception through popular propaganda to the Greek in general. Many Greeks may have forgotten their nations' history from the past, trick into the fantasy of Neo-nazis propaganda.

The biggest shame is to vote for them in Greece. Nazis have executed thousands of people here. Neo-nazis claim those executions never happened. They are pretty stupid...

Hello kostas. The thing is is people want something for nothing. They want the government to give it to them. As a whole they don't stop to thing about where these things come from.Nor do they care. In my country we are getting ready for Presidential elections soon. One woman is telling every one to vote for Obama because he gave her a free phone. I don't know what the neo-nazis are telling your people but From what I see on the news here Your country is n big trouble because the people don't like the idea of cutting back on the state spending. My own country is getting in the same kind of trouble. We want a bigger government and for that government to take care of us. If we continue down that rout we will lose too many freedoms and I think that that is where your country is at now. Obama really hasn't done any thing good for our country but the people love him because he is a very persuasive speaker. Until we have lived trough some thing like your country did in the past the younger generation doesn't belive how bad it can be.

A bad workman always quarrel his tools. This is a proverb that just comes to my mind. There can be two issues. Either people just dont work or government has crippled the whole system. Whatever is the scenario, people can try in put effort and try to change the system. Instead of taking the path

Greek people rely on "friendships". "I know this guy, who knows that guy who can help you". That is the most painful truth here. We do something and expect something in return. That is why JFK said, "what have you done for your country". Neo-nazis send groups to help the needey and defend them, against immigrants. So, they think. That's how they trap them into voting.

I watched a documentary afew nights ago about a scrapbook that was found during the war with the nazi's that showed the head men and doctors who did the vile operations and such on women back then. This scrapbook is one way they identified the men who had done these vile acts and were brought to justice. I certainly hope they don't get any of that going again. I just forbid it!!

Many sadistic people have existed who have exploited such scenarios. Somebody had said that to see your real character, you need to have power in your hands. Then it would be clear if you are a good man or a bad one. War atrocities have been really heart wrenching. I think Anne Frank's diary is the best example in this regard.

I think why should we wait for mistakes to happen so that we can correct it. History teaches us never to repeat the same thing. The very existence of history is with a view of progressive growth of humans. But its painful that we never realise them. Our attitudes are still savagery and callous. A bit of sensitivity and care is what we need to have for our fellow beings.

I don't understand it either although I can understand that the neo nazi party appeals to people who have had a bad experience because of immigration. Some areas of Athens are no-go areas now since so many illegal immigrants have settled there and made a central area of the city dangerous. I cannot understand how they forget so soon the horrors that the Nazis brought upon Europe or the lives that were lost. I can only hope that there are many others like you, Kostas, who talk to their parents and their grandparents about what what happens when Nazis have power. Greece is not alone in this, the UK also has many immigrants from Europe and with jobs scarce no one wants people coming in and taking their jobs. People look at solving one problem not realizing the countless other problems this will cause to arise. The pressure of so many extra people on homes, jobs, medical services etc. is bound to cause resentment and if governments do not take action this can only get worse, and who knows where it will lead. We should spare a thought for the legal immigrants however, many of whom have settled down, work hard and are bringing up their children in their new adopted culture.

Such ethnic issues have become a come problem everywhere. even in Germany, the level of immigrants are increasing and their is an unrest brewing up there. I think people have to undetsand the importance of co existence. if you eel somebody is taking away the jobs, there is no point in fist fighting. have good education and b competitive, thats the constructive way of ensuring your job, not taking it to streets. Its really painful that people dont realise the importance of peace and harmony even after so many pathetic examples all over our world.

Knolwledge is the weapon to fight all this. Unfortunately some people are influenced by their parents and can't really see the truth.

I am sorry about the situation in your country. But it seems that we, human beings, are not capable of learning from our mistakes. It happens in politics, but it also happens in the family, at work, everywhere. WE are destroying our planet and we keep on doing. We are greedy and egoistic. And, worse of all, we are poud of it.

With every day passing on, our attitude is becoming more animal like. Humanity seems to be disappearing from humans. people have become extremely selfish. This is more an ethical issue than a political one. I can tell you this is not particular to one country. But seems to be a phenomena spreading across the wo0rld. Its high time we lead our younger generations in the right channel.
