A Casual Vacancy J.K. Rowling

I was a fan of the Harry Potter books when they came out and I've read the whole series and really enjoyed them. A few months ago I heard that the author was coming out with a new book completely unrelated to the Harry Potter series and this new book would be for adults. I was interested right away because I really enjoyed her other books. I had completely forgotten she was supposed to come out with a new book until last week when my boyfriend's sister had mentioned something. It ended up coming out the next day and I made a mental note and added it to a list of books that I'd like to read in my spare time since my boyfriend will be gone. Well tonight my mom and I went to the mall so I could buy shirts for work and we stopped by the bookstore and she bought me the book. I'm excited to read it but I have no clue what it's going to be about lol. I'd like to start it tonight but I have a bunch of other things I need to get done first. I was just curious if anyone here is reading it now or has read it already. I haven't heard anything about the book yet so it's kind of like a mystery for me. In a way it's kind of a good thing because I won't have any good or bad ideas about the book while I'm reading it. This way, I can make my own judgements and have my own opinion without being influenced by what people say.

I don't know if I'm ready for her non-Harry Potter books. I have not heard of her new adult books, yet, but maybe sometime in the future, I will have to pick up her other books. I just hope that it's good. For an adult, I enjoyed reading HP. I hope she won't disappoint in her next books.

I don't think it's a fantasy novel like HP. From what I've read, I think it's more of a mystery novel. Still, I hope it would not be boring.

I know, I'm a bit worried that I'll be expecting this new book to be more of a fantasy novel like the HP series. Hopefully it's not boring and I like it.

It is on my list to read, if I ever find time to read again. Probably over Christmas traveling it will get read. I really have not heard much about it, and did enjoy the Harry Potter Series. Lots of the "kids" who read the Harry Potter Series through are now in college and therefore adults.

I still haven't started it. It's too hard for me to start a book in the middle of the semester because I have so much schoolwork to do. Then I'm always reading textbooks and so I don't want to start reading a book for pleasure. Hopefully I like it once I start reading it. I remember I was about 7 years old when Harry Potter first came out and I got it for my birthday. That's when I started the series and my grandma bought me each new book that came out. I'm now 20 years old and I basically grew up with Harry Potter until I was 19 when the final movie came out.

Yup, i agree that the 'kids' are now 'adult'. maybe that's why she choose to write a mature book.

Hi, I am a fan of the Harry Potter series myself. This book is a radical shift from her previous theme, maybe a whole new genre of her literature. I should check it out myself too.

It will be a lot different from the Harry Potter books. I'm hoping this one will be just as good and I'll find it enjoyable. If you do check it out, I hope you enjoy the book!

I didn't know she had another book out CourtKnee. Thanks for telling us about it. I have an eReader. I just pay and download from my online bookstore that services my Sony eReader. I don't have any of the Harry Potter books. I have the movies though on DVDs.

I honestly had no idea it was coming out so soon until my boyfriend's sister mentioned it. A while back I read somewhere that she was writing one but it never said the release date for it. I still haven't started it yet though. If you end up reading it before me let me know what you think of it! Sometimes I read books on my ipad but for some reason I like to have a real book in my hands every now and then. Lol I love the smell of a new book. But putting it on an ereader is really convenient, especially when you travel around a lot and don't want to have to carry the whole book with you.

I'm not much of a reader myelf, so I probably wont read it. But my sister always has a book in her hand, I know she will most likely read it since she read all the Harry Potter books as well. Hope you ejoy the book when you get around to reading it.

Sometimes I can be a very picky reader and it's hard for me to find a book I like. It's also hard to find the time and that's part of the reason I don't read as much as I used to. I'm hoping this book is good, I don't even know what it's about. I bought it because of the author and hopefully it turns out to be a good read.

I love the Harry Potter series and I think J.K. Rowling is a great writer. I'll be buying this new books of hers too. I have heard mixed reactions about it though, but like you, I want to make my own judgments as to whether I'd like the book or not.. :) I need to read for myself first before dwelling on other people's opinion of it. hihi! P.S. have you read the Tales of Beedle the Bard? :D

I'll probably start reading it once my semester ends and I don't have to worry about all my classes and papers. It'll give me something to do over winter break and it'll hopefully keep me busy. I did read the Tales of Beedle the Bard and I didn't really like it that much. I guess I didn't really expect it to be a bunch of wizard's fairy tales lol.

I haven't read any of her books all the way through. I seem to be the one person who got bored reading Harry Potter. But i"m like you in that I like to make up my own mind about books. I picked out a few free books from the discard box at the library today, and now they are around next time I need something to read.

I'm the same way with movies too. I'd rather make my own judgements than listen to people's opinions. I've found that I love some movies that were given bad reviews and I hated ones that people raved about. It all depends on the book or movie and I choose for myself. However, if I do hear a lot about a particular book, I'll look into it and see if the book is something I'd enjoy reading.

I am so glad I read your post. Me and both of my boys love the Harry Potter books, as well as all the movies. It is really great the J.K. Rowling has another book out. I am going to have to go out and buy it this weekend. I hope it is appropriate for kids. Let me know when you get done if this was good for a teenager. Thanks

Since you are an adult you can read an adult book, but J.K. Rowling never promised to remain a children or magical fantasy writer. I think she wants to try her hand in all genres....best of luck with your reading....and don't forget to tell the story in our forum...so I don't have the burden of reading book..:)

I started reading 'A Casual Vacancy' and halfway in the first chapter, I realize that there is no 'magic', nothing 'special' in this book. It is depressing. I skipped to the end. It doesn't have a very inspiring ending. It is all about the problems of the people who live in a small town in England. The redemption just isn't meaningful enough for me. The title explains it for this book is indeed a 'vacant' book. Her Harry Potter books were excellent and perhaps, that was her best writing.
