Save money on your grocery bills?

So, the economy is possibly worse than it has ever been at the moment. Prices for everything are rising, and this means that we really need to take the time to consider the things that we could do in order to reduce the costs that we have every day of our lives. One of the things that we spend a lot of our money on are groceries, and there are many people who just don't consider what they buy at all which means that they waste a lot of their money on it. I used to go shopping several times each week, and would buy things that I thought would be nice. Now, I buy things because of the price that they are, rather than because I would like them. So this is something that saves me a fair amount of money on a weekly basis. I worked out that I managed to save £40 last month just from getting cheaper things. I am thinking about a lot of other ways that I could reduce these costs even more. Do you have any ideas that you would like to share with the rest of us?

Groceries does indeed take a big chunk out of our budget, and that's why I think having a grocery list is helpful. It not only helps us reduce unnecessary purchases, it also saves us time for which we could do other things instead. Before, we just picked items from the shelf, and when we get home, we realize that either we bought too much of something or we bought an item that wasn't necessary.

I actually think that my groceries are the biggest thing that I am spending money on each month. I don't have to pay for bills or rent right now, and I don't have a car, so foods and drinks are literally the only thing that I am spending a lot of money on. I think that a good way to be able to get away from buying too much of a certain thing is to make sure that you have a list before you leave the house. You should go around your kitchen and have a look at the things that you have run out of, and then put them on your list. When you're at the shop you should make sure that you don't get anything unless it is actually on your list.

The other thing that I would add is do not go shopping hungry. I mean it if you have not eaten, and you have a tummy that feeling hungry then everything at the grocery store will look very tempting. This can cause you to make some impulse decisions to purchase items that are not on your grocery list.

I go once per week here. But after I see the sales papers for the 3 major supermarkets. I also shop at the swap meet fruit and veggies stands. I do what i have to to save a few dollars. Have a great day there.

I think that it is a very good idea to see the things that are on sale at each of the supermarkets, because it would be a little bit annoying if you bought something one day and then found out that it had been cheaper somewhere else at another time. I also try to look in the newspapers because they often have offers on, and then I will shop at the place that seems to have the best offers. I will also eat whatever is on offer, so this means that the foods that I am eating will change on a weekly basis depending on which are at the best price at the time.

I like the Martin Lewis Money Saving website and I often look at it in order to economize. One of the ways he suggests people can save money on their groceries is buying budget no frills sort of food and drink. My kids and I eat a vegan diet. So I have to be careful that all food and drink we buy is suitable for vegetarians and vegans. My kids like no frills pure fruit juice both apple for my daughter and orange for my disabled son. I like to drink cranberry juice and the cheap versions of it contain sugar. I like the cranberry juice that is sweetened with grape juice. I buy it when it is on special offer. The no frills juice juices are very cheap. My kids like the no frills biscuits both digestives and rich tea biscuits. I like ton eat no frills strawberries and think they are a bargain. At one supermarket I collect nectar points. I can then get money off my grocery shopping. Yesterday I got ten pounds off my grocery shopping at that top. Even better at the moment another supermarket has a deal which is spend 40 pounds and get 5 pounds off the next time the person shops. I have one of those vouchers in my hand bag ready to use next week. I take a shopping list and stick to it spending the amount of money I can afford. Good luck.

Yes I have had a good look at his website as well, and I have to say that he does speak a lot of sense. I don't really have complicated foods myself, ever since I started trying to save money I would always buy as little as possible and then just make do with the basic things. I buy frozen vegetables that I can just mix into my pasta, and that means that I always have my portions of vegetables which will keep me healthy, so there isn't all that much for me to worry about with regards to my actual healthiness.

I once made a complete grocery list of the things I need at home. There is not a single item thta is not needed there. When I go to the super, I check what I don`t have and put it in my list. I only buy that. Sometimes food is too expensive. Lately in my country potatoes are 2 dollars a kilo. I will not eat potatoes, but changed that for rice and pasta. I will not buy something if it`s too expensiive in a certain moment and can be replaced for something else. And I don`t keep a big pantry as the super is at a walking distance from my home.

Sticking to a list is a very good idea, and it is something that I have had to learn to do. Sometimes I would write a list but then get a lot of things anyway even though I might not have needed them, but when I sat down and worked out the amount of money that I was wasting by doing this it made me realise that there was no excuse for it and that I would just have to stop and take the time to think about the fact that I would need to save money. So now I do things properly and will only buy the things that are on my list.

I discovered a good way of making my big list. I put it all in Excell and added items as I remembered. At first I printed a sheet and took it to the kitchen. Now I know it by heart and say to mysef : "do I have rice left?". As the super is so near, I only buy one package, kilo, pound, can, whatever, of each and walk back.

Yes, groceries are getting more, and more expensive. I tend to try to buy generic or store brands whenever possible as that helps me save a little bit of money at the store. Some items I do not like the generic, so if the price difference is that much I will buy the name brand. Then, again some products I have gotten so used to the taste of the generic that I do not like the taste of the name brand. This is particularly true with Cheerios. I once tried to buy the name brand when it was on sale, but it tasted so different than the generic toasted oats that I usually buy that I did not like the cereal at all.

Hi! If possible, can you use coupons? If you can, see which stores will not only honor them but see if there are any days where they will double them or offer another deal! Also, see if you can start a group that will help you save some cash as some people have made it a hobby to save $$. Also, try to stick with what you really need and stay away from the 'impulse buys'. If you have to have an 'impulse buy', see if a cheaper location will offer the same item. Good luck! Sarah

I have started doing coupons recently, and this is something that I have very much enjoyed doing. In the supermarket that I shop at there is a loyalty scheme which means that you get cash off coupons when you spend a certain amount of money in there. I managed to get $15 of vouchers this morning and that will give me pretty much a full week of shopping for free. I do my Uncle's shopping and as a reward for this he allows me to keep the vouchers which means that I am able to treat myself every now and again.

YAY!!! Great that worked out for the better and that your uncle is helping you out! Is there a coupon group you can either start or join in your area? That's another great way to get coupons that you might use, get rid of the ones that you don't need, or get some other ideas!

If you have already reduced a little in your costs then that could be a great start for more costs reduction. I think we should really look at what we need and what we don't need at all and also sacrifice is the key to saving more money, if we want to eat this now maybe we can also sacrifice by not buying that product until we get used to it, this way we can save more money.

I am trying to think of more ways to reduce my costs, because I am enjoying the fact that I am cutting down on money that I have to spend every month, as it is starting to mean that I am able to save money for my future. A lot of people tend to buy things that they don't need when they go shopping, and I have started to stop buying these things because I have had to think carefully before I go on each trip. I was buying too many things on impulse, and it often accounted for a relatively high amount of my shopping which was a bit of a shame.

We always find that bulk buying is best, when there are offers, and we can work this recession to our advantage, as supermarkets try their hardest to beat their competitors in price, if you have the time you can shop around, purchase the offers in bulk, providing of course you have the room. BOGOF's (buy one get one free) are ideal for saving on the bills. We have poundland here in the UK and you can get branded goods for a fraction of the cost that you would buy it in the Supermarket. I buy cod liver oil tablets and in Boots the Chemist they were £9, when I went to another shop they were £5 we are not talking pennies either. Same with my aftershave, in one shop it was £34, I went to another it was £22.

I also like to buy things in bulk, and I have actually changed around the way that we store things so that we're able to keep more in the cupboards now. I cleared out a full double cupboard and I will now fill it with things such as pastas and rice. It is these types of things that I think are good value, and if you're not too bothered about eating the same things every day then you can certainly have cheap meals. I know that a huge bag of pasta costs me about $4 and will last me for at least 40 portions because of the size of the bag.

We've always been pretty careful about our grocery bill, but we are now being even more careful, if that was possible. Although we did once go for a few months on little more than pasta or rice and beans, and we can't really do that again because we have a child now. But we are using coupons and watching for sales and making a meal plan.
@GemmaR (8517)
31 Oct 12
Yes I understand that you cannot really feed your child the same things all of the time because obviously you want to give them a healthy diet if there is any way that you can do so. I don't have children, so I am rather enjoying being able to just spend as little as possible and hardly use any money at all. I am trying to lose weight at the moment as well so this is something that I am finding rather helpful. I know that I have learned good lessons over the past couple of months that I can continue using for the rest of my life.

Grocer bills just seem to keep climbing higher and higher. we need tocut costs and cornere wherever we can. i find that bargrain shoppong the sale flyers and clipping coupons does help to ease the burden.
@GemmaR (8517)

I think that it is a shame that our bills just seem to be getting higher and higher all of the time, and it doesn't seem as though there is anything that we can do about it. I remember when I was able to get enough food for my family for a full week for around £20, but this is nowhere near possible anymore for even half a week because of the speed that food has actually risen in price. I don't think things are going to get any better, so I always love it when I get the chance to see a coupon because it means that the shopping is at least a little bit cheaper.

We try to do shopping once every payday. We buy items in bulk for at least two-weeks consumption except for meats, fish, vegetables and fruits, which we are buying every week from the wet market. I can see we are saving more when we do it like this because we can avoid buying stuffs like we don't actually need. also, before gong to the market we are doing shopping list so we can only buy the items we really need.
@GemmaR (8517)
31 Oct 12
I think that being able to do your shopping on the day you get paid is a very good idea because of the fact that you know that you have money on that day and that means that you're definitely not going to have your card rejected or anything like that. I always bought things that I didn't need in the past, but now I honestly think I am better at it now because I have been forced to think about money as I don't have all that much of it at this moment in time. Making a list is another good idea because it means that you can plan your meals properly.

I'm poor in budgeting and much of the money I make go to food because I seldom cook at home. That means going to do groceries is not a regular thing for me. I go to the supermarket when I run out of toiletries and some canned foods. Otherwise, I just buy ready-made food.
@GemmaR (8517)

I think that learning how to budget is something that is incredibly beneficial to the majority of people, because it just means that they're able to make their money go that much further, which has to be a good thing. One of the other good things about it is that it makes you stop and think about all of the things that you're spending your money on, and that means that you might come to realise that you don't always have to buy the same things to enjoy yourself, and you could buy cheaper things and have just as much fun with it.

plan your meals out ahead of time using what you already have in the house to base those meals on. If you have the extra money and there is a terrific sale on say meat, take out what you need immediately and freeze the rest. Do NOT shop while hungry. You buy things you do not want or really need because you are hungry. Stock up on staples, pasta, beans, rice when they are on sale, and store the rest.
@GemmaR (8517)

I have paid the price many times of going shopping when I am feeling hungry, and I will admit that it isn't something that I'm all that proud of most of the time. One of the problems is that I have to go shopping in the afternoons because I have things to do in the morning and this means that the first time that I get free to do my shopping is the time that I am actually the most hungry because of the fact that I am thinking about what to have for dinner, as it is that late in the evening so I can't help that really.

I also follow that rule. I go for a weekly basis. List them down, get only those what we really need. We, my husband, make it a point to have a full meal before going to the grocery, for we may tend to crave for something when got there. An empty stomach going to grocery could buy us several food items. Also, we may compare price between items. Same quality but lesser price is a wise move there. Good luck to all of us. Thanks

I know of a lot of people who will go shopping on a daily basis and get a lot of things that they probably don't even need. When we had a lot of money, we would do this and would end up having to throw a lot of things away because we just didn't get the chance to use everything up. We have had to learn very quickly now, and I am actually incredibly glad that I have been able to do so because I know that this is something that I will be able to do in the future which will help my family in the long term as well as now.

Yes when the income was limited and so was the extra income,the only choice for us is to save money,I think the best way the save money is do less shopping,the less,the better.So we should just stay at home for more time and try to avoid the grocery and mall,I do not mean just stay at home,we can go for some sports,I mean just avoid the shopping,then you will find out that there are not so much stuff you really need to buy,then you can save a lot of money in this way.
@GemmaR (8517)

One of the best ways to learn how to save money is when we don't really have much of a choice in the matter, because it means that we either find ways to get things more cheaply or we just have to starve and not get enough food at all. A lot of people do just go shopping for the sake of things, because they're in the habit of doing so. I am one of these people, and I find that I'm always out shopping even though there's probably no need to do so. So maybe I need to try and keep myself busy so that I don't spend as much.

I don't have any new ideas but I do what you do; I don't shop for things I want to buy but buy things because the price is right. I try to buy some fruit, some meat and some vegetables each week but I don't have a specific type in mind to buy. If lettuce is cheap then I buy lettuce. If apples are cheap, I buy that. May not be first choice but it's good food for cheap.

I look at online circulars, find out what's on sale, go through any coupons I have and match them to the sales for optimal savings. Then I plan my menus for the week. I may not be eating my favorite foods but I'm eating nutritious food that is cheap. Planning is the key to saving money. Plan your menus around the sales and your trips to the store around other errands. I also advocate having at least a month's worth of canned goods, which I buy on sale, that can be a lifesaver is you find yourself with no food money one week or a disaster hits. Be sure to rotate them so you always have the best tasting food.

I have just discovered an application on my mobile phone which allows you to download vouchers that are available for your local shop, and this is something that I am very thankful for because it is meaning that I can see much more of them without having to waste my time going through all of the newspapers in order to find them. It is good to be able to stock up on canned foods when they are on sale, because most of the time they will last for a long time and it can be good when you're busy to know that you at least have a tin of something that you could open.

Whenever I go to the grocery I buy enough groceries to last me 2 to 3 weeks. I get savings by buying the larger packages rather than the retail ones. I also buy season and other food that are repacked then transfer them to containers. The seasoning that are in bottles or tin cans can be more costly that those that are in plastic sizes even though they have the same amount of content. Whenever I am going to buy meat, I simple get uncut ones and then cut them myself when I get home. This way, I get to burn my time (I have a lot of idle time) and at the same time save money.

One of the ways that I have saved money with shopping has been to shop at Target. I use my Red Card, and that gets me an additional 5% off the purchase price. I also get all my prescriptions at Target because they will send you an additional 5% shopping pass after filling four prescriptions. They also give you in-store coupons for items that you normal purchase, which helps you to save a little bit more money. In addition, they will periodically send you in the mail discount cards. One day, I went shopping I had my Red Card, RX rewards card, and a 5% discount card that they sent me in the mail. That day I saved 15% off my purchases, which helped quite a bit. I have been trying very much to make a menu. I will look to see what items that I already have for cooking, and brainstorm meal ideas from theere. This way I can think of meal ideas where I have most of the ingredients already so I may only need to pick up 1 thing instead of all the ingredients for a meal. This does tend to save me both time and money. I would also say be creative and find ways to use what you already have rather than purchase more items. The other day I wanted to make a meal that I generally make with tomato sauce. I was out of tomato sauce, but I had Prego, so I simply substituted the Prego. The dish came out pretty good; although, it did taste slightly different. Still liked my tomato pasta soup with onions that made, so it all worked out just fine. Recently, I discovered shopping at Sprouts. They have really good prices on produce. I save a lot on buying produce at Sprouts. I mean bell peppers 3/1.00 when they are .88 cents each at Fry's. Onions .50 a lb compared to .97 a lb at Fry's. It is like saving about 33 - 50% on produce. I do not know because I have not tried this myself, but a friend told me of a program that they have where you can go and get 80 lbs of produce for $5. It is some type of a moving market or something of that nature. I have not tried it myself as when I looked into it was summer. If you want to participate in it year round you have to get a $100 membership, but apparently in the Fall and Spring you do not need the membership. You may look into whether or not they have something like this where you live because if they do it could be a pretty good deal especially if you eat lots of fruit and veggies.

I used to just go shopping once a week, but I remember being in a shop once, and there were some pensioners looking at the prices of the loose vegetables, and talking about how they had gone up in the last few days, and I had a sort of epiphany moment, inasmuch as such a word can be associated with shopping in a supermarket, and realised that its easier to keep on eye on prices if you go more often. Mostly I tend now to buy just the food I need for a day, but I live fairly close to a reasonable sized supermarkets so that's easy, but it does mean I can watch how the prices change, better, and that I don't waste as much as I used to. In many ways its a bit of a game, I feel, I go in there seeing what's gone up and what's gone down, and what's on offer and what no longer is, it's a bit sad, but we have to do it, those supermarkets are out to charge us as much as they can.
