Hurricane Sandy has hit the coast and I have been looking at all the pictures being posted on FB. I know this will sound totally crazy, but I am really missing living on the cost in New England. I grew up in Connecticut and used to love to go to the beach and watch the storms come in off the ocean. Back in the day, I would go to the beach with a few friends, beach chairs and a few cases of beer. We are older and wiser now, I think. With that said, I am up here in the mountains of Pennsylvania basically waiting for the power to go out and the flooding to begin on the lower lands by all the creeks, streams and rivers. I believe I am prepared for this. I am a person who loves camping so many of this comes natural plus I have survived many hurricanes while living by the shore. I have plenty of candles, bottle water, gallon jugs of water, I will be filling my bath tub with water and have a bucket ready for manual flushing and to keep clean with, bags of ice in my big freezer, batteries and flashlights, gutters are cleaned out, wood is covered and dry, chain saw fueled and ready for action if needed, plenty of blankets and all clothes washed, dog food and dog treats: can't forget them! I am now working on other hurricane survival foods, plenty of peanut butter, breads, canned meats like tuna fish, ham and chicken, soups I can cook on my grill and now the best for last, a hurricane cake and brownies, pretzels and other snacks. I found 2 decks of cards and pulled out a few games that do not require the internet or television. You know the kind, some have a board to play on, some have dice or a spinner to play with. Many of us used them when we were kids. We just may have to introduce these strange items to the newer generation to keep them occupies when the power goes out during hurricane Sandy or any storm we may get this winter. Did I forget anything? What do you do to make sure you can survive a few days without power. What are you childhood memories of any powerless storms?

Hello friend... We've been hearing about 'Sandy' for quite some time... I feel bad for the East coast people, who'll take the hit worst than anyone else... Hope, 'Sandy' proves to harmless and goes away without a lot of damage... God bless America!

Hi mr_pearl, I really do feel for the people who live at the shore, it is not easy being there and most are evacuated as I am typing this. By the time Sandy hits us the wind will die down to about 70-85 miles per hour. There is a cold front it will be colliding with and that may feed her a little. A lot of the area surrounding me has just recuperated from the last storms that flooded and shut down entire towns for 2+ weeks. Many of those home have been condemned and bought out by the state and will not be allowed to rebuild there. I am higher up on a mountain with lots of trees and less people. Therefore we may be the last to get power back on if we lose it. They are saying possibly a week without power. I know Pennsylvania Power and Light ( PP&L) has called in states further away for help from other power and light companies. Hurricane Sandy will not be harmless but I sure hope everyone stays safe and dry. God Bless America! God Bless All!

here where i am at in Canada, they are talking about the power going off and the remnants of hurricane sandy. in fact, we are suffering from another storm right now and it is raining and fairly windy. i am wondering if they may cancel school tomorrow. good thing i don't have to work tomorrow. we were at my moms house for Boxing Day (its the day after Christmas, a stat holiday so its another day that the family can get together or go shopping as most stores are open) we came home around 9 or so only to find that our power had gone out! so we gathered candles, flashlights etc and played the game Apples to Apples. it was a blast. we do still like to play board games but now that our girls are getting older (19 and 15 with the 19 year old off at college) it gets harder to play them. hubby and i will sit down and play scrabble once in awhile.

Hi Cher913, The wind is picking up here and I am being kept up dated by friends who still live by the shoreline, some of their photos of the flooding and waves are worrisome, glad I will not have to worry about my house getting flooded. I live one high ground and we do not have a basement here. Crazy I know, but I am almost looking forward to playing a few board games and maybe a little poker by candle light with my husband and 19 year old nephew who lives with us. I even found 2 puzzles that we may put together. We may be out of power for a week or so. Not looking forward to it being that long. Hope you stay safe up there and thank you for your response.
