My Dog Had Me in a Panic This Morning

My dog was laying on my bed this morning right before I took two of my kids to school. When I came home about a half hour later my dog did not come greet me like she usually does, so I called her name, and she still did not come and I did not hear her collar jiggling or anything so I checked the back yard thinking maybe I had let her out and forgot, but she was not in the back yard. I then checked the laundry room because she has gone in the there and has accidentally shut herself in since she is a big dog and her body is long and that room is narrow so she closes the door with her rear end without realizing it. She was not in the laundry room either, I checked the upstairs the basement and called her name out about a million times. Then I thought maybe she squeezed out of the door when we left this morning, although it is unlikely because like I said she is a big dog and it would be hard for her to get by without one of us seeing her. But anyways I got in my car and drove around the immediate area yelling her name, but she was no where to be found. I went back home and I was going to call the police and then I heard a little woof of a noise. She was in the downstairs bathroom and had managed to shut that door and lock herself in there, the one room I didn't even think to look in and there she was. Why she had not barked earlier I have no idea. She had probably gone in there to drink out of the toilet, which I thought we had cured her of doing, but apparently that is just when we are here. I opened the door and she jumped up and started planting kisses all over my face. We have also taught her not to jump up like that but I think in her excitement of getting out of the bathroom or knowing she had worried me she forgot about that rule. Since I was happy she was not lost I didn't mind her jumping on me this one time. She had given me quite the scare.

I believe she gave you a big headache and it was traumatic if you asked me. I maybe exaggerating but hey if ever it happens to me you will find me crying or shouting her name in the middle of the road.Oh that exaggerating! You know, as I was reading your post, you are slowly giving me a heart attack, I was thinking that there was something bad happened to your dog and Thank God, she is just locked in one of your bathroom. It makes me smile with a little tear. I love animals and at present I have three dogs. I will be sad if this post will turned out bad, like there is something happened to your dog. My pets means so much to me and I believe so are you. I hope it will never happened and also learned for both you and your dog. Thank God she is now safe.

For sure she will realize what happened to her and for sure that she will avoid that bathroom of yours specifically because she was locked there and she would not want that to happen again. I really hope it will not happen again.

Yes, it was very scary, and I love animals as well and especially dogs. It would have broke my heart had I not been able to find her. She can move pretty quickly, as she ran out the front door once when we first got her. It took me and 6 neighbors and then my finally my husband to catch her. She was not a puppy when we adopted her, she was already just over 2 years old. So at first she did not see us as her family yet. Now she does. Now she will not run out the front door, unless maybe she sees an animal out there, but she listens to us now and now knows she is part of our family.

Sorry it took me so long to answer. She is a German shepherd, so she has quite a long body.

The reason your dog became trapped in the bathroom is that she was thirsty and looking for a drink. She knows not to drink out of the main toilet so she must have been really thirsty. Yry shutting the bathroom doors - it's an easy habit to get into - then your dog can't get trapped and also cannot drink out of the toilet. Make sure your dog always has fresh drinking water available. I keep a bowl filled in a little corner of the kitchen all the time and there are containers all around the yard as well.

Actually she has one of those refillable water bowls so she is never without water. She really likes her water fresh and would prefer to drink out of the toilet after someone flushed rather than drinking out of her bowl, that is why we got her this refillable one with a filter so the water always comes out fresh. We thought we had cured her of drinking out of the toilet because we had not seen her do it for about a year now ever since we got her this new bowl, which did have plenty of water in it. But I guess she must like to do it when we are not home so we don't see her doing it. Now we will have to start closing up everything again like we did before.

I bet that was scary! I'm glad she was okay! I get scared when my dog doesn't answer me too. It happened the other day. He's not allowed upstairs because he sheds like crazy. We have a gate that we put up to stop him from going up. We came home and he wasn't at the door to greet us. I started calling his name and he didn't come. We checked all over and then thought we might have left him outside on accident, but he wasn't there. I thought the same thing you thought, that he snuck out the door when we left. I thought he was gone! I was panicking. Then, we see him standing behind the gate on the stairs! Somehow, he must have jumped the gate and got upstairs! I don't know he he did it! He looked very upset when we found him. I'm not sure if it was because he thought he was in trouble or because he couldn't figure out how to get back downstairs! I was so happy to see him. I just sat and hugged him. I couldn't be mad at him!

I am glad you found him safe and sound as well. He possibly could have snuck up stairs before you left and you didn't realize it and then you put the gate up and he got stuck up there. I probably would have hugged him too rather than yell at him.

ladym33 Oh what a cute story. Thank you for sharing. I was so glad it had a happy ending. The first part is a senario we can all relate to when we have dogs. They are so precious and so much a part of our families and lives!!!

When we first got our kitten a few months ago I came home and couldn't find the poor thing anywhere. I was getting a little worried that she had gotten out or trapped somewhere. I ended up finding her inside the couch! Yes, INSIDE the couch. There is a ripped spot on the arm of the couch and the kitten crawled in there and fell asleep. After that the first place I looked for her was inside the couch. I don't think she fits in there anymore because I have not seen her in there for awhile.

She probably had been barking while you were gone. She could only keep it up for so long before getting tired. The poor thing must have been beside herself when you finally found her and opened the door.

That made a good read ladym. Dog lovers and I am one of them can understand what you went through. All is well now, thankfully. Jumping all over you must have been a reaction just to see you at which time she forgot all her manners. You allowed it and that was really cute!

Awe a happy ending to your dog story. I'm glad it worked out well for you both. It is scary when you can't find your beloved pet or pets. I have been there. Oh the sloppy wet toilet bowl kisses, those are the best! LOL.

Dogs are man's bestfriend and they are like members of the family. That is why when they are not around; we panic and look for them. I like dogs and they are dear to me. Whenever I lost a dog because of old age or in sickness, I was really unhappy. It is good that you really care about your dog. We should really take care of them and treat them as members of our family. Have a nice day!

First I'd like to say it's really nice that you love your dog so much that you "go crazy" in a situation like this (I'm not saying I'm glad your dog put you through that, heck no!); it's nice to see people worry about their pets, specially when you see so many people mistreat them. That is so sad. Anyway! I thought the story was going in a very different direction when I started to read it. I'm glad you found your dog and I'm glad she's ok :)

I never liked dogs ever since I was young. I really find dogs kinda scary...but I learned to live with them. I still don't want to take care of a dog not even in the present. Yeah dogs are kinda frustrating..

What a great story, although I was sitting on the edge of my seat wondering if you were going to find her, so was very relieved to read that you did. She was so happy to see you! I love a happy ending!

I'm glad to hear she was ok. I can relate to that scared feeling when you can't find your fur baby. I have a 6 yr old chuhuaha and when I can't find her, I start to panick. She likes to go outside when the doors are left open and she can slip her body through the fence slats.

I hate being scared when you cant find the dog. Its so scary and you panic i know i do and go into search mose. When ny dog isnt at the front door when i get there im like where is the dog this isnt normal of him at all. This morning i got up to go yo eork and i went to the bathroom first thing and i heard him get down which he usually doesnt do and i let him out of the room and walked to the kitchen and he followed me and i noticed he was shaking and being a small dog i picked him up and was talking to him and then brought him to the room to lay down in bed with my boyfriend and after a while he stopped i believe he was cold but im keeping an eye on him.

Lol, my dog likes to do this to me too. She's only 4 lbs and sometimes she'll follow me into rooms, walk out onto the porch, and sometimes in my closet. Then a few minutes later when I'm wondering why the little white mop isn't following me around I call her name in a panic then feel bad when I find she's been sitting alone somewhere stupid lol. Its to the point where I don't panic as much because I've become somewhat used to it. My dog is a genius lol.
