Why shadow keeps on following us?

We were walking home. Me, my 2 cousins (2 & 5 years old) Cate & Charley with me walking home. It was nice and clear night sky this evening. All street lights are on and so bright. The whole place was really lighten. The moon is so round and big in the skx. While walking Charley ask me something and make me really think. Because i dont know how explain to them why. Why shadows always follow them and why do they copy whatever they do? What I should tell or how do i explain to them, a 2 and 5 years old kids. Do i need to explain it by the exact defition of shadows, what are them. Or where they came from. Explain to them the scientific explaination of why do shadow or their own shadow follow them. More question will arise for sure. Question from the answers. What if I make a story why do shadows following them. Or simple explaination so they understand better.

Hi... I love kids and their questions... Your child's definitely going to be a Brainiac... :-). Explain to the kid that Shadow is part of one's self... Thats why it never leaves one... Explain also how the shadow is produced... For example, when an object blocks light, an equally proportionate amount of 'shadow' is produced... LoL.. It's going to be tough... You'll need to simplify it a lot... Let the kids be curious about their surroundings... Let them ask questions... And help them find answers... That way they'll be better groomed... :-)

They are really brainy children. They keeps on asking and asking whenever they dont know or understand things surrounds them.

Well yes, the must be... The kids are always like that.. Their brains are hungry for knowledge and they keep seeking information all the time... Just don't refuse to answer them... On the contrary, inspire them to be curious and ask questions... That'll help them grow better... :-)

I think I would get a flash light and explain it to them that way while making up a great story. My own kids, nieces and nephews have always remembered silly little stories I would make up to explain different things to them.

Here's a simplified explanation. shadows are created when a source of light cannot pass through a surface. Sine the human body isn't transparent, light cannot pass through it. It creates a shadow, instead. Shadows follow because they are dependent on the movement of any object. If the object isn't moving, the shadow also don't move. Same applies if the object is moving.

it's not the shadow that follows us, it's the lack of light which is blocked by ourselves. Perhaps you could explain it to them that way if they keep on asking you might add: if you put any object in front of a light (source) it blocks the beams of light that come from the light. The light that passes the object paints the contours of the shadow.

Hello, You know what, let them have a happy childhood and create a story how shadows appeared and why. Don't try to fit the science to such little cousins' life :) Just my opinion. Happy mylotting!

I would just tell them a shadow happens when something blocks the sun. Then perhaps I'd take a few items of different shape and show them. I don't think you can make it much more simple then that.
