My wife and I

usually eat out about once a week or so. We challenged ourselves to go for one month without eating out. The last time we ate out was September 30, 2012. That was the last Sunday in September. Today is November 2, 2012. I plan on making the same challenge to her today. It wasn't easy to resist going out today. While my wife was at the Red Cross donating platelets, the staff came in with Sonic's Chili Cheese Dogs and my mouth started getting hungry for one of them. If I had been alone I just MIGHT HAVE FELL OFF THE WAGON. She helped me out this time, I just hope that I can help her out if it becomes necessary. I LOVE YOU HONEY.

Congratulations on going a whole month without eating out. That is terrific, not to mention much healthier for both of you. I admire your determination. Why not reward yourselves with a homemade fruit salad? Have a great weekend!

You are a great hubby! It is so much easier to have someone to lean on and even better if you can lean on each other!

I agree its cheaper to eat at home most of the time. The only exception is when I have free coupons and pay zero. This happens several times a year and I use the coupons. Recently, I had a free coupon for Subway and used it; however, no Sonic in my area,so couldn't take them up on their free offer. Sounds like it would have been a challenge to avoid eating there. I do like chili dogs and they sure have to many calories for me!

I have not seen any coupon that I wanted to use that didn't first want you to BUY SOMETHING ELSE SO YOU COULD USE IT. The example I'm referring to is like this: FREE SANDWICH WITH THE PURCHASE OF MEDIUM FRIES AND DRINK. If I really don't want the fries and drink, I'm being FORCED TO BUY THEM JUST SO I CAN GET THE FREE SANDWICH. That's not right to force someone to buy something to get something for FREE. How free is it under those circumstances? NOT!!!!

I agree the coupons for another purchase are poor choices to use. The coupon I used was for a free sandwich no purchase required, so it really was free. I think businesses should never require a drink purchase, as my Subways offer soda, which isn't healthy. I live in an area that really works hard to promote the local restaurants with free food, as they know you will be back, if they offer a freebie. Its getting people to try the place to convince you to change where you eat. We have 2 Subways within walking distance to my house and a 3rd and 4th just a little further.

I imagine that it saved quite a bit of money to not eat out we do that also plus we might get the urges but you just have to be strong and somethimes you can make something alot like you would buy at a restraunt.

I am adventurous with food but, my wife is at least as adventurous as I. She made an orange chicken recipe last week, I think it was. Gosh was that good.

I think that this idea is awesome! Congratulations to you and your wife for making it for one month without going out to eat. My husband and I need to do the same thing. Honestly I love to eat out (no dishes and no clean up :-D) but with our large family (7 if everyone goes and never mind if they bring a friend--eeek) it just gets too spendy. I am trying to limit when we do go out and most of the time I say, ok we are stopping by McDonalds and its DMO (dollar menu only). Those value meals aren't really a value. And we have cut this back to less than once a week. In September we made a 1068 mile trip and had no choice but to eat on the road and honestly I enjoyed the first time but by the time we got home, I was tired of eating out and when I calculated the money we spent, it was frightening. I would rather have dinner at home and rent a movie and buy some popcorn that spend that money to go out to eat. It gives us more time at home to be a family :-D

I do not see how it would be possible to do if you were not at home. That would make it almost impossible, I think. Congratulations on cutting back on what you do. We enjoy our own cooking, but don't really like the clean-up.

Great job, Im sure its been hard. Especially if you like and are used to eating out alot. But do remember how much money you have saved. I bet its a good amount. SO much cheaper to cook at home. Take care there. We are proud of you both.

We have not calculated our savings yet. When you calculate the cost of food at a restaurant, then add tax, figure out how much gas you used and then add in the TIP for the service it becomes quite a hunk of MONEY. I'm sure we could do a lot with the MONEY that we did not spend, if we had it ALL AT ONCE.

Having someone to be accountable to helps you stay on track. If I were going to be tempted, it would not be by a chili cheese coney, as I know how inexpensively you can make those at home. In fact, we often have all the ingredients for that. I am more tempted by pizza, or donuts, or a breakfast meal than by any burger or hot dog. Good work, over a month without eating out.

I find it difficult to comprehend how folk can afford to go out to eat. A nice meal for one at a good restaurant costs half my total weekly grocery bill. A takeaway meal costs as much as 3 main meals I cook at home. I recently went on a little holiday, my first in about 18 years. One drink, bourbon and cola cost $8. I was in shock. But I knew things would be expensive and I had saved up determined to have whatever I wanted. The cost still bruised my sensibilities somewhat.

I know exactly what you mean. That`s why I like so much my way of taking vacations. I have a timeshare and I can get apartments. So I go wherever I want (providing I can pay the airfare) but spend the same amount of money in eating as I make my own meals. Probably on a vacation I spend a little more on some extras, but it is not much if you buy it at the super.

It is indeed very difficult to stick with a huge change like that! Good job staying with it! I guess my question is why you chose to do it. Was it a health matter - you just wanted to eat healthier? Or was it a financial issue as you wanted to save the money? Cause if it's for money reasons and the cheese dogs were free... you know I'm gonna hog one down! lol

The reasons for doing this are many. When you figure out the cost of eating out, it can add up to QUITE A CHUNK OF CHANGE. When you figure out that YOU FREQUENTLY DO NOT FEEL SATISFIED WITH WHAT YOU JUST ATE, and that you can make it better tasting for all concerned, it becomes a question of WHEN ARE WE GOING TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS? If you think about how little you know about what went into this meal, how was it prepared and what about how much nutrition are we losing, it just becomes a challenge to do it ourselves.

Keep on going Putting a control on the food you have will really help you to save your pockets but make sure that you have the food you need for your good health. Make sure that you don't sacrifice your health for saving money

With all of our experience in eating and preparing food, I don't think we will do our health any injustice. Sometimes it is just EASIER to let someone else do the cooking and the cleaning up after.

One can really save a lot of money by spending less on eating out. I wish I can be like you and your wife. Sometimes I get so lazy to cook for my family, I will just opt for the easy way out and go out to eat. I should practice more discipline and not spend money on eating out too often.

True, it is the easy way out. We enjoy our own cooking, though. It is a whole lot cheaper than eating out.

That's really cute! Well, yeah, eating out is kind of expensive than having dinner at home. But I also couldn't blame you for being temped to do so. haha! Fast foods and restaurant dishes really looks sumptuous and enticing. However, discipline and dedication to your promise to your wife is the most effective weapon against giving in. :)

Which was the reason for this decision? Money or healthy food?

Actually it was a combination of many factors. Cost, nutrition and most of all the fact that WE CANNOT CONTROL ANYTHING ABOUT WHAT WE ARE SERVED. If you aren't in the kitchen, you don't know what goes into what you are eating.

Hi finlander! Great to see you. It sounds like you and your wife are wonderful about supporting one another. That is a great thing. Now as far as the eating out..it can be tough getting out of a habit but it sounds like you are doing good with it. Mouthwatering is not an easy thing to go through. Stay tough!

That's a good way of saving money and to challenge one self for self discipline. I will try this challenge and suggest this to my friends- so we can save some money for other things.

Congrats on achieving your goal and I hope you can achieve the same goal this month. I know that donating platelets can be a long process and I am sure it was hard for you not to eat for a long period of time. I know that my husband Randy would not have been able to go a long time without eating because he is diabetic and his sugars could get low if he does not eat regularly. I am glad that your wife helped you out and I am sure if you had to help her you could.

It is most hard to defeat oneself, because people are easily tempted. When they can't stand being tempted, they would spoil themselves and tell themselves that do it for this once, then they end up doing something that they have pledged not to do.It is great that you urge each other to do it.I wonder whether it is due to your budget or your health or a combination of two for you to challenge yourselves not to eat out.

Not going out to eat is a good idea to save money.. However I dont think that even just once for a month will cost you too much.. Maybe once a month is just fine.. somehow it would add up spice to your relationship, consider it as dating.. :-).. have a great day.. :-)
