The good old coconut, food that makes you healthy

Hi mylotters, Do you know the benefits of eating fresh coconut flesh and drinking freshly picked coconut juice? There are many... When you eat coconut, you get the natural virgin coconut oil which is usually sold quite expensive due to the difficult and time-consuming "cold-pressed" process to extract the vco. It is claimed that VCO, despite being oil, can help you to slim down faster, kills viruses and bacterias due to its acid Lauric and helps to keep your skin moist and healthy. The fresh coconut juice is the best natural mineral water and it is loaded with many vitamins, minerals and acid lauric. Drinking coconut juice regularly can help cleanse your colon system and it's also a very effective remedy for aging problems. I am glad that coconut in my place can easily grow almost anywhere and we get to buy it really cheap, sometimes even free. Are you a "coconut" person? I am. Love it. I eat and drink it every week.

I wasn't aware coconut had so many health benefits thanks for sharing. I do especially when I'm running a lot drink coconut water. I think it tastes terrible but its an excellent source of potassium. I tend to get muscle cramps when I run and a diet high in potassium helps control them.

Hi Sindelle, You're the first person that I meet in the internet to say that coconut water taste awful. Are you sure the one that you drank was the real coconut water? I think it tastes great especially when it's cold. I usually put my coconut in the fridge before I drink it, it tastes especially good when it is cold, try it! It is not only rich in potassium, I think it is also a natural alkaline drinks. Besides, it also kills bad bacteria and helps to keep your colon system healthy. Try to avoid the processed coconut juice, it doesn't taste the same as the natural juice. Happy mylotting.

I bet what I'm drinking isn't as natural as the stuff you're used to. The stuff I buy at the supermarket says its coconut water and it tastes terrible. Sometimes when I can find it I try to buy the coconut water that is mixed with pineapple since I find it slightly more tolerable. I've always heard coconuts are very rich in potassium. I started drinking it instead of eating bananas because of all the excess sugar I was getting. Here is an article from wikipedia that talks a little more about it. I wonder if they're either referring to another type of coconut or if we've both learned a few useful things today. :) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coconut_water

Has anyone had real juice straight from a coconut and coconut water they sell at the store? I think coconut water tastes awful. I was wondering if drinking coconut water tasted a lot better.

I love it! Both the fruit itself and the juice. We have some coconut trees in our backyard in the province so whenever I go home, I always ask my cousin to get me some.

I'll never get tired of drinking coconut juice. The only time I'd stay away from it is when traveling especially on an aircon bus because I'll need to pee frequently.

I love traveling to tropical countries where coconuts grow. I am very keen on the look of the coconut palm tree. I like to drink at that tropical location coconut juice. It was refreshing and delicious. It is expensive to buy coconut juice in my home country. It comes in a long life drink carton. I love to eat the white that is inside a coconut. It is possible to buy a coconut but it is very challenging indeed to open it to get the white to eat. If that happens the brown husk that is on the white coconut is hard to get off. This discussion tempts me to buy a coconut to eat.

Hi maximax, The coconut that you discussed in your comment is the mature coconut. This one is a little difficult to handle because it's turned hard and the white coconut flesh is more solid. I can relate to your story when you use the word challenging"...that's why I always buy young coconut. The younger the coconut, the more juice it has and the more tender the flesh. If it's too young, you only get the juice. So, the best is the in-between age (but I am not sure how old that would be). I always joke with the coconut seller that I want the 18 - 20 year old coconut only (that's how other coconut buyers describe it). It's just to say that I want a not-so-young and not-so-old coconut. Coconut sellers can easily tell the difference when they weigh the coconut with their hands. Thanks for responding.

I certainly like the taste of coconut, flesh and juice. I have been pretty much addicted to coconut. But, these days I have to be very careful. I should say I have become allergic to coconut. If I have any thing which has coconut in it, flesh or juice, I become dizzy. My blood pressure goes up within minutes.

Hi greenline, Are you saying that the coconut is the cause of your allergy? and also high blood pressure? That's weird. Maybe it's because your body is "warm" naturally. You know when you take coconut, especially if you consume the flesh, it has this effect of heating you up and makes you perspire more. So, you should just take a little bit of the coconut. That's why those who have "cold" body, easily feel cold and their condition become worse during winter time and VCO is especially good for this type of body. It will warm up the "cold" body. Thanks for commenting.

Wow, that does sound really cool to have a coconut tree growing right beside your home. If I had a coconut tree closeby I would go and pick up some coconuts everyday. It really is delicious to drink when they are in season here. Though it is quite expensive at my local grocery store. I have some friends that drink that boxed coconut juice but I won't buy it because they put a lot of sugars in it. I would rather drink the real juice from a real coconut.

Hi nijolechu, Boxed coconut is usually loaded with preservative to increase the shelf-life of this product. During the processing, from real coconut to box packaging, this juices have been exposed to a lot of "elements", so it is not the real thing anymmore. Sugar is also heavily used, it's being added to juices and bicarbonate drinks and I suspect they use the cheap sugar HFCS High Fructose Corn Sugar. Manufacturers are like that, use cheap material to produce product at the lowest cost possible and the HFCS is really cheap. Those who consume it a lot will damage their own internal organs. This cheap sugar is also used in all the 2-in-1 or 3-in-1 instant drinks. I know coconut is expensive in countries where it cannot naturally grow. But if the price difference between the real coconut juice and the boxed juice is not much, I recommend you get the real juice....but even now, you've made the right decision by not buying the "fake" juice. Thanks for joining in the discussion.

I am an one who is from Kerala. We people over here have a large number of coconut trees and due to this simple reason we have a good availability of coconut an it's products. We people prepare most of the dishes by the natural coconut products which is available to us. This really make the food more delicious.

Hello wonderboy, Yes, I agree with you. Our local recipes here uses a lot of coconut milk, from our main dishes, rice to desserts and even drinks, we incorporate a lot of it because it makes the food, drinks and desserts taste more delicious. They smell good too. I think coconut milk is also healthier than dairy milk. Dairy milk is pasteurized to kill the bacterias in it but in doing so, the process destroys some of the precious vitamins in the milk. You can read more about this problem in Dr. Mercola's website. Thanks for commenting.

Yes, it is the same here in my place. We have many coconut trees too but you need the coconut experts to climb or use a long stick (we call this "Jolok") to pluck/ twist the coconut's branch so that it will drop to the ground. There are many varieties of coconut trees, some short, some very tall trees. I live in the suburb area and most of the time still have to buy coconut. The seller will help me peel the thick top part so that when I want to drink it, I just use my knife to poke a hole in the middle to drink the juice. I then make the hole bigger so that I can use my spoon to scoop out the young tender coconut flesh. I get lots of free coconut when I visit my father's orchard. That's about an hour drive from where I live. Thanks for responding.

many unorthodox traditional medicine practitioners recommend it as a universal solvent against poisons, any kind of poison, especially when it concerns snake bites.

Hi mydanods, This is a new information for me. That's really interesting, coconut to solve poisoning problems. I think in some medical websites, it is reported that alzheimer and parkinson patients also benefit a lot by regularly taking VCO. The humble good old coconut is really awesome. Thanks for responding.

I always drink coconut water every day off at the market near my aunt's house. And sometimes also eat the flesh of the coconut. Coconut water is not only refreshing, but also gives a cooling effect to your body and digestive tract. Work system can cause inflammation of the stomach and it can be cured with coconut water. It also controls body temperature. One of the best health benefits of coconut water is low in sugar which makes it a nutritious drink for heart and diabetes patients. It also helps in weight loss. Many dieters prefer to drink five or six glasses of coconut water to lose weight. Coconut water is also very beneficial for the body to provide a calming effect and helps reduce heat in the body. Coconut water can also cleanse the skin with acne and helps to get smooth skin. This is the most I like coconut.
