Highlighting in textbooks

I'm trying to do some reading for school and I just can't seem to concentrate because the person who had the book before me highlighted in every single chapter. It's very distracting to see all these bright colored marks all over every single page of my book. I usually buy my textbooks from this website my dad showed me where the books are pretty cheap. Most of the ones I buy are gently used or new, but I never know exactly what condition the slightly used books will be in. This is the second time I've gotten a book that was really highlighted in. The first time it happened the person only did it in the first 2 or 3 chapters and then stopped. But for the class I have now, the person highlighted in every single chapter. I don't ever highlight in my textbooks because I usually just take notes and I also like to sell my books back to the school and try to get a decent price. It's just a bit frustrating to me trying to read through all the highlighter. Would this bother you?

Yes that would bother me if it was red. I highlighted in college too, but only the real important stuff. Too much highlighting is useless.

Whoever had the book before me highlighted to the point where it's just useless. There's more highlighting than white spaces. It's very annoying to read. If anything, I usually take notes on a separate piece of paper.

If I wasn't planning on reselling the textbook I would, but normally I didn't. I would make notes in a notebook or scrap paper. My sister use to write all over her books, and highlight then resell them. I actually still have most of my books from college to refer back too. I would mention this when I was selling it as well, most don;t.

I usually resell all of my textbooks back to the school. There are a few I can't sell back though because I ended up buying the international edition of some of my books and I can't sell them back because people in the U.S. aren't even supposed to have that copy. All my other books I sell back and since I buy cheaper off a website, I usually get almost all of my money back when I sell to the school. I'm hoping that all the highlighting doesn't decrease the value of the book when I try to sell it back.

This would definitely bother me! When I was in school, I kept my books fairly clean and free from marks. I also wrote notes because the act of writing something down was usually what triggers my memory about a certain fact that I needed to learn. Having highlights on a book would distract me, specially if somethings that I don't consider as important is already highlighted.

I'm the same way. I do much better when I read and take notes. Highlighting in a book would do nothing for me. There are pages in this book I have now that are pretty much all highlighted except for a few lines. It's very distracting because it's not even relevant what the person highlighted. But I guess this is what I get for buying a used text book.

Hi friend, this kind of highlighting activities surely irritate me. I used my sister's book while studying and mostly she points out the important things and marks the answer for various questions in the book, due to this activities i don't have the ability to find the answer by my own as well as search various option in the book

I used to do this all the time. I used to get in trouble for it. As my parents wanted to turn text books back in for credit. See here in mx you have to buy your own text books. Like you do in a college. And you can buy new or used ones. After a class was over you could get say 1/2 back for credit. But not if they were written in. So, we never got much credit back. i was a good one to high light many pages in mine. Have a great day there.
