I just came up with this idea this morning. I want to know your opinion if religions can turn people into robots? or there is no such thing. Would you like to entertain this idea that religions can make us like automatic robots which shuts down our rational thinking?

I believe very few people are not robots, no matter if they are religious or not. Many who call themselves atheists or agnostics are even more indoctrinated than the religious people.

No, it can not. But the people behind it who able to done that. If Islam was able to do that, mean that right now I was a robot. Didn't I?

It's more like this, "Everything in this world, mostly created for a goodness purpose. But the people who use it, that make it get worse. Some people may use it for a goodness, some use it for a badness". Yes, I'm a muslim from Indonesia. What about you?

Hello friend and it is very good question you asked, isn't it? my answer is "NO" religion does not make anyone a robot. i can explain it to you in some simple words. you know what in ancient times all people can trust any other person, even if it is stranger. because they know about their region the truth of their religion and have a 100% faith on their lord and even if they do anything the know their lord is having his eye on each one of them. according to me, religion make a men a human being, because before the origin of islam, people are so much bad that one person when sharp his sword then he cut off some other traveler to test his sword sharpness. men start to drink blood spread on road without even knowing about whose blood it is? and there is lot of more things which you can't even imagine. our prophet S.A.W.S.(P.B.U.H) teach everyone on earth about their lord and made them real human being and you can see now as people are forgetting their religion, men are forgetting humanity. even real brothers are killing each others for a single money and other crimes are also there, which i think that you are very familiar of it. i hope that i hadn't hurt you, am I? have a nice day and may god bless us.

also one important thing i forgot to tell you that our lord made us human being which is made of two things "body+spirit=men or women" this is special thing which is god gifted to us, our god send us to the earth for only one type of exam which will be rewarded at the end of life. everyone have to give account of his life, nobody can escape it. our god send us to the earth with some aim which we forget in the daily life due to advantages on earth. so that god again send his messengers to earth among us in our form for guidance. so that we can know for what we are on earth or why we born? now you tell if religion made us robot then we all must follow same. but our god have give us choice to select right or wrong which will effect on your result. religion is actually introduction to our lord and knowing of our aim of being on earth. and follow it is our faith, like if you love some one and he tells you to do something then you do it for him/her. but in religion we follow what that messengers says which are not blind and we follow it after investigating it, because there are lot of enemies of religion who take benefit of religious people, this can be called blind followers and not a robot, because they can think but they don't want to think. have a nice day and may god bless us.

To make it short you mean, in the beginning there is really no religion because God give us freedom to choose-therefore religion is just a choice.

No,I don't think so.I am a Hindu and I am devoted to my religion.I visit temples,go to sages to seek their help to sort out my problems. But I am not a blind believer. My undaunted devotion has not turned me into a robot who blindly follows false persons who claim to be sages and thousands follow them.My experience with religion is that being religious in true sense of the term frees you from all shackles of doubts and fears. We are human beings. Our personality has a spiritual dimension.Religion develops the spiritual aspect of our personality and helps us see the glimpse of the Truth. It is our blind beliefs that turn us into robots.

We follow religions because we believe it and we are not against it what makes religions robotic is indoctrination- indoctrination in wordweb means accept doctrines or teaching uncritically or without a critic mind you just accept it- like when you say to a robot sit down- it will sit down without asking why?

The mere fact, the person still have the power to choose not to follow the doctrines. It can pass through generation to generation. Not all people will follow, since they have their own principles. It is still a matter of choice.

Of course they do! "All" is written and 'clear' so you're not even allowed to think. Let alone questioning things. Ever since I left the church I'm a much happier person. No one will dictate me anymore what to do etc. No one else is responsible for my way of living, my thinking, my victories and my mistakes.

I get what you are saying, but it is a choice and a form of support, just like everything else. IT is the way you choose to believe and then you follow the "rules" of how you choose to live. But think of this...the government is telling you or even dictating to you how you will live...and they take things from you and don't even tell you about it. The government can make you do things you don't want to to...for instance Obamacare..come next year you will HAVE to have healthy insurance or you will have to pay a penalty if you don't...nothing like dictating at its best! So in a sense...how it that different that a religion "telling" you what to do?

No one else will really be responsible but you alone. Religions are like spoon feeding and they want you to open your mouth and say AMEN! No questions asks if you ask questions you will be expelled? WHat?

What is called Obamacare is exactly what we had already in my homecountry Holland. And it works perfect. Nobody gets towering high bills from a hospital anymore. And no government tells me how i have to live. Sure there are rules. I may not commit homocide. Is that a bad thing? In democratic countries the leaders are chosen by a majority. In churches there's nothing to chose. They shove everything through your throat as they see fit.

Being christian....I say no...as you are always learning and doing. But I would have to ask..why religion? I mean come on...people these days are addicted to texting, tweeting, hand held game devices, cell phones...when was the last time you saw someone NOT doing something like this? my grand daughter...gets up in the morning on non school days, and the first thing she does is sit at the table and start up with that cellphone/texing, instagram, this game or that, tweeting etc...and she is 12! Why? She sees her mother doing same! Between those two there is always a cell phone jingle going on! Look at that person crossing the street...cell phone to their ear. IN stores..I can't tell you how many times I have responded to a person that I thought was talking to me..only to find out they were on a bluetooth and talking to someone else! And for why? so they can tell everyone they know everything there is to know about them! Talk about robots! So if it is acceptable to be a robot for stupidity, why not be a robot for your religion?

Like what you said, we don't need religions because people are robots now to other things like Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and cellphones- its our new religion.

I don't know about robotic thinking but I feel some people might think that. Religions that have lots of rules can turn what should be a relationship with a living God into a series of rules and regulations so that they seem to do the same thing over and over, thus, turning them into a robotic way of thinking. I worship Jesus, the risen Lord, its about a relationship, not a religion. I don't go to church to recharge my batteries, I got to church to worship God and to seek his ways and wisdom so that I can apply his word when I'm in the outside world.

Absolutely right, it's not the beliefs that makes them robots its the series of rules and regulations that they automatically perform every ceremony. Following every suggestion and program that the church impose whether you like or not would slowly turn you robots. I don't go to church anymore like I used to be and I found it releasing.

While I don't really think that religion can turn a person into a robot, I do think that religion does have the ability of making a person have tunnel vision when it comes to lifestyles and decisions that are different from those that they make with their own religions. For example, I honestly don't think that there would be as much hate projected onto homosexual individuals if it wasn't for the fact that many religions teach so strongly against homosexuality.
@averygirl72 (37715)

Tunnel vision right, by that it seems that they narrowed their world by entering that tunnel and they can't see the other side of the world. Religions hate homosexuals but if they are not life threatening or they are not harming anyone why hate them?

I think in a way, it does make people think and behave like robots because then your actions and the way you think should be patterned after what the bible says. But that is supposed to be good, right?

13 Nov 12
That is supposed to be good but what if it is actually wrong then you will do wrong things over and over without stopping like a robot.

No, Islam encourages us to learn more ,and how to think at all , And reflect on around us, in the universe and its creator , In ourselves and how God created us .. Etc., to worship God, the Creator of the universe, the only one who deserves to be worshiped except him, is not it

I would never believe it but since i have seen it with my own eyes and experiencing it right now. My answer to your question is yes at times it does turn people into robots. My mother in law and father in law are both like robots in chritianity. they are catholics and they do not have good reltionship with the neighbors and i guess nobody at all. they are just into themselves. only them. they have no heart for others. i stay just next to them and still knowing our situation if there was any other parent they would just put a blind eye. i don't know how could some parents of human be that way. too religious is dangerous. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day ahead..

I can only speak for myself, and I can say that religion has made me less of a robot. The society, the government, the education systems: those are what makes people robots. Everyone gets integrated into them, and attuned with their ways and systems. Religion however, is different. Major religions brings people to a state where they are more aware of their actions, it opens their mind to abstract thinking. Of course, there are a few people who become mindless, but those people are always mindless and robotic anyway, even if they were not religous they would become robotic with something else.

True it's not only in religion that you can turn robots even in other things that you are so accustomed to do you can't stop doing it or never have the courage to stop doing. Like me I was brainwashed to attend church every Sunday but then I found people not going in church why can they do it and me I can't. My mother would always shouts at me if i don't go to church but later I found valid reasons to stop following her and it gives me sense of self-control.

This is a tricky issue. No, I do not believe that religious people are robots. However, on issues of politics, "morality", science, etc. religious people can become robots. It's like they are fight against whatever their perceived "right answer" is, which comes from their religious leader or community's interpretation. Religious people can be very creative and open-minded until their leader or community makes an ultimatum regarding an issue. Then, they must choose to conform/be accepted, or disagree/lose their community.

Religions is all about conformity or community right. I realize religions is just one aspect of madness of people- some are not entirely religious but addicted in politics and science, philosophy and many others that catch your fascination.

Interesting thought in itself. Rational thinking. I say it depends on the person and the religion. Some people seem to not question things but actually seek something or someone to follow. For that reason it is possible that the worst religion out there for non rational thinking except for extremist cults would be atheism in my opinion. People should question what they are signing up to.

Yes. Yes it can. I am not saying everyone who follows a religion turns into a robot. As a wiccan, I have to turn into a blind follower or robot granted there is more freedom in my beliefs. My friend is a Christian and he says he broke away from the church to not end up a mindless robot. I do not feel religions can necessarily turn people in to robots, but that the religious institutions in which preach certain religions can. There are people out there who will blindly listen, follow, and praise their religious leaders to the point that even if it is found the religious leader is lying about something or misinterpreted something, they can't see it. There are some people who would follow their preachers right now if the preacher said they only way to be free of this world and remain in the graces of God was to kill themselves while in a tub of holy water. It sounds extreme, yes, but there are those out there that will do anything if the preacher is convincing enough in his delivery. Another issue is obviously science vs religion. Science involves more rational logical thought while religion only requires everything was just created out of thin air. For some people I feel scientific thought is impossible for them because of how deep they are into their religion. I had one person tell me that there was a giant conspiracy to create different dinosaur bones and hide them all over the world as a test. In which I responded "Someone obviously had too much time on their hands then.. or you know.. dinosaurs actually existed."

It can but like what you said there are religions that seems tricky like it seems to be true but when you look closer it does not make sense. Like when Catholics see their mary statue cry with blood they are so amazed that they worship it. They need to pray the rosary over and over with repetitive words when in reality they should not do it. Religions should not just be made out of thin air, there should be rational and logical explanation also before you believe.

Robots no, but blind followers will do. Almost always this happened because people allow their minds to be brainwashed, especially by charismatic preachers of religion.

Blind followers just follow without thinking if what they follow is good or bad. Robots just follow a preset program or a remote control so it's seems the same?

I don't think so. In the first place, God has given us free will and that is a gift. It's our choices too if we should accept Jesus. However, God wants everyone to be saved. He also give us freedom not slavery.
