Good discussion, jvincent. Here's my choices for cheap and healthy: brown rice, non-fat Greek yogurt, fresh spinach, multigrain pasta, potatoes, eggs, tuna packed in water, pumpkin and watermelon. These are all healthy and vitamin/mineral packed foods that are relatively inexpensive. It's not real hard to eat healthy without spending a fortune. Of course some foods may cost more or less depending on what country you're in. There are a lot of sites that give lists of inexpensive, healthy-for-you foods. I never thought about it. I'm glad you brought this up though, because now I can probably save more money and eat a little healthier.

Thanks for suggesting all these foods. Isn't brown rice expensive? Fresh spinach is good for us. Would it be alright to steam the spinach or eat it raw?

Brown rice isn't expensive here. I eat it all the time. I LOVE brown rice. The kind I eat is called Basmati rice. I think it's from India. Spinach is very good steamed. You only have to steam it for 1-2 minutes, as it cooks very fast. It's also delicious raw in a salad or on a sandwich instead of lettuce. I like it best in a salad. And you're right - it is very good for us. It contains niacin and zinc as well as being a very good source of vitamins A, C, E, K, B6 and also iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium and several other supplements & vitamins. This discussion has made me hungry. It's time for a midnight snack.

That's good for you. White rice does contain a lot of sugars.

These foods are very good to have in your kitchen. I love garlic, I make oatmeal and cookies with oats, and onions are a wonder veggie that keeps for a good little while. Other cheap foods are rice, popcorn(unpopped), and some kinds of potatoes. I like sweet potatoes, but they can be a little high. All of these foods are good and good for you. How much easier could it be to eat healthier with the great taste that these foods provide along with the great value.

Yeah, I still have to research for more affordable healthy foods. Is popcorn good for the body? I also like sweet potatoes.

I've heard sweet potatoes are healthy. My friend who is a personal trainer has said they give you energy. Obviously you have to be health conscious of how you prepare them though. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't approve of draping them with a brown sugar glaze lol. Corn is known for having no nutritional value. I'd suspect popcorn is the same. Also how healthy it is depends on what kind and how much topping you put on it. If you don't go crazy with the butter or seasoning its probably better then deep fried potato chips but not really healthy either.

At least popcorn has some value in fiber. Try to season it with spices instead of salt and butter. We need fiber for digestion and it can also help reduce bad cholesterol levels.

Hi jvincent_129, for the sake of living a healthy life we prefer not to take too much meat since a few years ago. More over meat and seafood are very much expensive compared to vegetables. I always like to take half rice bowl of oats for my breakfast and I would take a cup of milk or coffee or milo at the same time. Yeah, we like to have beans, tomato and onion as well as some local easy growth green vegetables fresh from our yard as one or two dishes to eat together with brown rice. We have sweet potatoes, bitter gourds, lady's fingers, chilies as well as some others tropical vegetable growing in our back and front yards. All our harvests are free from pesticide and chemical fertilizer Besides we can save some expenses from buying vegetables from the market Happy posting

I agree that growing own vegetable plants can save some money. Further more we can earn a little by selling the over many veggies sometimes like chilies, lady's finger as well as yellow gingers or their leaves to the greengrocer whom we buy veggies from him. We have to do the weeding often as the weeds grow tremendously fast especially during rainy season. My husband and his elder sister do most parts in taking care of the plants. I usually help in some of the work the morning For I have my part time work in the afternoon. Harvesting is the most pleasant moment. We have two rambutan trees in the front yard too. The fruits will be getting ripen very soon

Wow. That's nice you have veggies in your yard. It will save you a lot of money for vegetables. And they are fresh also. That's a healthy routine you have there. Planting crops in your yard is a good investment for the future.

Studies have shown that populations that eat a diet with large amounts of oatmeal and oily fish have a lower incidence of some diseases therefore I think you could add oily fish which are cheap, such as mackerel and herrings to your list all the best, urban

You could also add that near perfect food the potato all the best, urban

Thanks for suggesting. Yeah I am consuming fish oil with vitamin C. Mackerel and salmon are so much expensive. But they are indeed good in protein and nutrients.

In my country tofu was considered a cheap food. I love tofu and it is a healthy food. My family were also love carrot and banana. Yes, we live in tropical country with lots of banana. We eat banana almost everyday .
• Philippines

Yeah. I love bananas because it offers a lot of health benefits. It is rich in potassium and magnesium.

I love that bananas are a great source of potassium however I try to limit my consumption of them. Of all the fruits we eat bananas are one of the highest in sugar. Granted its natural sugar but its still sugar. I only eat one a day that I know I will burn it off.

We're not scared of what fruits may contain natural sugar. As long as it's natural we consider it healthy .

Banana, apples, oranges, tofu, eggs, carrots, and other type of vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are packed with vitamins and mineral. They are cheap too, compare to meat or seafood. Other thing that makes it cheap is to cook your own meal. Even if you have healthy ingredients, but if you go outside and eat in a high end restaurant, not only you get a hefty bill, but the portion is small too. High end restaurant tends to serve small portion, and they are more focus on the presentation. Quantity is not in their category. Also restaurant tends to use other ingredients to make it delicious. For example, usage of butter, oil. Stir fry in chinese restaurant is the same as veggies in oil. Fish is very healthy. But if you go to fish and chips, it becomes unhealthy because of the deep fry in oil. So to get healthy ingredients and cheap, I think we have to cook our own meal, instead of eating out. What do you think?
• Philippines
11 Nov 12
Main consideration why a food is unhealthy it's because of the way it was cooked. Frying is very unhealthy in which you use a lot of oil. When cooking fish, it's much better if we steam cook it. Tofu is also delicious.
• Philippines
12 Nov 12
Yeah. Be careful. Olive oil is nice if you can afford it. It's better to not cook fry at all.

Sometimes I do fry my food but to make it healthier I use only certain kinds of oils. A small amount of olive oil can cut the fat when you fry your foods and be healthful. Of course I don't mean deep fry but in a frying pan. The only think I don't like about it is that it tends to burn off easily and sometimes it shoots up a little. What I mean by that is you can feel little bits of oil sometimes popping out of the pan and touching your skin so be careful how much you use to control this.

I would like to add these items to your list: - pasta - dark bread - fruit & vegetables - wheat (like couscous, bulgur, etc.)

Yeah. It depends on where the pasta is made. What is dark bread? Fruits and veggies yes. Thanks for commenting.

These are good choices but not always applicable to everyone. I for one am very sensitive when it comes to food and my blood type is not friendly to oats and tomato. I incorporated oats in my diet years ago and I did notice a bit of result in the losing a few pounds department but it also gave me acne problems. Lol.
• Philippines
12 Nov 12
Oh really? Are you sure that it was because of those foods you had acne? I haven't heard anyone who had a allergy on oatmeal.

Apple asHealth Food - Apple as Health Food
Lots of healthy food quality, unfortunately the price is not cheap enough. I've experienced it myself when bought in the market. The truth is not always the case as many healthy foods affordable. To get healthy food, adjust the budget. No need to assume that buying healthy food takes a lot of money . In my opinion, some healthy and inexpensive foods are: Apples are loaded with pectin can lower cholesterol and glucose levels. Some research also suggests that apples may improve memory. Broccoli is a vegetable high in calcium, vitamin C, and antioxidants. Broccoli proven to help prevent cancer and osteoporosis. Green leafy vegetables are rich in fiber also makes digestion more healthy. No need no guilt when eating dark chocolate (dark chocolate) because of its health benefits you can achieve. Chocolate is high in antioxidants and flavonoids. By eating eggs, at least could have been spared from cataracts. White eggs are rich in protein, fat-free and cholesterol-free egg yolks contain choline while, which controls the nervous system and the heart. Fresh papaya fruit is an ideal food to prevent stomach bloating. Papaya is also able to improve digestive health and heart. And for skin care, papaya can make the skin glow. And you know, until now, I eat all that food cause my salary can pay it now, Thanks God

So far, I have bought apples. I won't buy Broccoli because I don't know when it will last. How many days does it lasts? Eggs are good source of protein that's why I take them. I can eat them raw and just take them directly. I also know dark chocolates are good for you. Fresh papaya is also good. But I don't know how to buy it. I can't tell if it is ripe or not.

Usually you can get a good deal on meat at the grocery store. Also when these sales come across I like to stock up and freeze it. I've found when I prepare my own foods from scratch they tend to be cheaper and healthier. You're right the foods you've listed are pretty cheap and healthy. One of my best friends who is incredibly cheap eats beans for almost every meal and uses several of those ingredients. I do however feel that if you're a smart shopper you can find other foods that are just as healthy at very affordable prices.

Yeah. Of course. Cooking your own foods can save you money with your choice of which foods to eat. It is also healthy to cook your own food.

Oooh I am actually teaching my students about nutrition this week, so I have been looking more into cheap sources of healthy foods! I wouldn't consider spices as cheap foods...per pound, they are a lot more costly. However, I think that spices enable us to eat healthier by adding flavor and essential nutrients to "bland" food. Otherwise, we will be more likely to eat salty and fried foods. I would add: apples carrots bananas greens (certain times of the year are very cheap) Another good thing to consider is how to use these few, cheap ingredients to make something delicious? One of my favorites using oats and apples is to stew the apples with cinnamon, add a little water until it boils, and add oats for apple cinnamon oatmeal!

That's a nice idea you got. Apples and bananas are indeed cheap and also carrots. Oatmeals with fruits are a good diet to lose weight and be healthy.

I beg to differ that it costs a fortune to be healthy, contrasted by the Huge Cost of Health Care in the US. $10,000/day for a hospital bed! How cheap is that? My favorite cheep healthy foods are Sardines @.65 a tin. Dry Beans, fresh fruit and vegetables, and canned soup @.50 a can. Potatoes are a staple, and not at all expensive.
• Philippines
11 Nov 12
Sardines aren't healthy foods because they contain msg. Canned soup isn't healthy either it contains msg and salts. They are good emergency foods for instant meals. Not all that expensive.

Bananas, oranges, apples and salade stuff is sort of cheap too. I love fruits and veggies, i'm trying to be healthy now and not eating so much junk food and fast food stuff. I only eat out once a month now and cook every day at home. Been staying away from soda and drinking more water as well. But i agree it is expensive to eat healthy but if you want to be healthy you have to do it.
• Philippines
11 Nov 12
Yeah. That's why I am searching for inexpensive healthy foods. I love bananas and apples, these are my favorite foods. I just try to limit the junk foods and sodas because they have high sugars. I only choose fruits and vegetables as my way of eating healthy. I know there are some other healthy options like oats, organic foods but they are expensive.
