You must already know that you can download windows 8 from the windows Microsoft site. Most of the time with the new operating systems like windows vista, 7 and maybe 8, files from your previous windows can be found on your c: drive in a folder called windows old but you must have over 10Gb of free disk space or you could buy an external hard drive.

You could download it, but be warned that windows 8 has been created with a touch-screen environment in mind, so is quite different from other versions of Windows in that respect. It's relatively cheap to get an upgrade, but read up on it first to ensure that you really know what you will be getting.

You can download Windows 8 directly from the Microsoft website. However, I would recommend downloading the Upgrade Assistant from Microsoft first, which will scan your system and inform you how Windows 8 will work on your computer. Windows 8 will utilise more system resources than Windows XP, and there may also be some programs that will not work due to incompatability, so it is important to know beforehand what the upgrade will really mean to you. Assuming that your computer will support Windows 8 and that your software is compatable, then it would certainly be a worthwhile upgrade to make. If you do decide to go ahead and upgrade, then I would recommend doing so before the end of January because the Microsoft promotion will end then and the operating system will become much dearer.

I typically wait till about service pack 2 on an Operating System before I move over to it. By service pack 2 they typically have enough of the bugs worked out. Just my suggestion. Bryan

If you buy it online, make sure to buy an external hard drive too, because any important files will need to be backed up onto the external hard drive because installing a new OS will erase all your data.

You can find the system requirements here. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/system-requirements If your computer meets all these requirements there is a lot more information and you can probably find out where to get the windows OS, or how to download it.

Buying it? You typically get different versions, home, pro etc ... But apart from that you get a full retail and upgrade. The full will require you formatting the hard drive and starting again from 'scratch' and the upgrade will well upgrade from your windows XP to 8. You may want to look up the system specs for Windows 8 however as your machine may or may not be able to handle it. Also look at the drivers you currently have installed and go online to the makers sites and make sure they have Windows 8 drivers released otherwise you may end up in a jam.. Goodluck
