"Gangnam style" is a phrase that refers to the lifestyle lived in Seoul's Gangnam District. People who live there are seen as trendy and higher class, and living lavish lifestyles. One of the main lyrics of the song is "Oppan Gangnam style," which means something like "Big Brother is Gangnam style." The whole song and video are basically Psy making fun of wannabes who say that they're Gangnam style for trying to be something that they aren't. The words make it clear that he's a poser (if you're familiar with a bit of South Korean culture and know the language), and the cheesy dance is definitely not something you'd expect from the high class Gangnam District. Of course, considering how popular Gangnam Style has become outside South Korea, I think it's probably safe to say that there are a lot of people that just enjoy the catchy beat of the song and find the video amusing. You don't have to know all the cultural background or speak a word of Korean to see the humor in it!

I think the beat and the dance move made the song a huge hit. I was so happy for a Korean performer to be noted worldwide and became famous because of this....Glee is even performing the song! Wow!

I agree with what everyone else has said (especially you--I don't like or understand the song either!) I would just add that I also think it has become so popular because kids, even pre-teen kids, really like it, maybe because it is so silly. I also think it is a song that is easy to parody (just check out you tube for tons of parodies of this song. My favorite is "Gandalf style"). And so the more people parody it, the more popular the original song becomes. Probably a one-hit wonder, but it sure is popular now!

Gangnam style is my mobile ringtone now. . I don't understand its lyric either but I like the music and melody. I guess what makes it a hit too is the Korean singer too. You see, he is not so good looking and yet he have so many girls around.

It's the typical without-any-sense n°1 hit, just like any Bieber, Minaj, Usher, Rihanna "song". It sells... and that's it, there isn't magic nor something special about them.

Sometimes a weird things is going to become fashion. Nobody knows why, but it's addictive. It may be that most people don't know a word from the lyrics, or the really crazy shots in the video or the crazy dance moves or the guy itself... but I think it's more thanks to Internet... sometimes it just becomes viral.

I don't also know about it lol well, maybe it is because of the beat and the dance step. Most people love gangnam style because the stepping is very easy and I think it's famous because of that.
