Butterflies in December?

United States
December 6, 2012 12:34pm CST
The weather here is acting crazy! I was running the other day and I cannot tell you how many butterflies I saw! They were beautiful, but it's December for crying out loud. It's not spring lol. I hear we have a cold front coming in this weekend and the bottom's going to drop out. We will literally be 70 one day and barely hit freezing the next. Do you have crazy weather right now where you live?

Our weather in Alabama has been back and forth also. I haven't seen a lot of butterflies but the lady bugs! All over my front porch. It was only a week ago I was shedding the jacket and then the next day you are hunting long johns. Not a big wonder everyone has been sick around here. I bet they were beautiful to see.

Snow, yikes, you can keep it. We had some flurries yesterday but nothing stuck thankfully. My dad whom lives in Texas had a white Christmas. That is rare. It's rare here as well but it has happened before.

It was great to be out running in December and see so many butterflies! But now we have snow so I am pretty certain that I won't be seeing butterflies for awhile now! lol!

Being in a tropical country, I never actually knew when butterflies normally can be seen, but I know I see them almost all the time. With regards to weather, however, I have to agree with you that it has been acting crazy for some time now. It can get so hot with the raging heat from the sun and then followed by heavy rain that will last for a few short minutes or several long hours after that. There was a typhoon that passed by our city two days ago and just yesterday the sun blazed out whole day long, as if making up for the typhoon. It's crazy and really irritating sometimes.

I read about the terrible typhoon. I am glad you are safe. The news said two whole towns were swept away. Tragic. It seems like you are having very odd weather on your side of the world as well!

I am thankful that our city and our place specifically has not experienced what the others have. I feel sorry for them and hope and pray that the victims will recover from this tragic disaster soon. Our government is doing the best it can to help resolve the aftermath in coordination with the private sectors as well. It is nice to know that there are still people who truly care. The weather is really getting weird everywhere. I have heard of many weird situations involving weather change in many places as well.

Yes, I have heard about the Crazy weather everyone is getting and how it keeps on changing every day. Here it has not really been over 45 in the last week, but any day it gets closer to 50 or above, feels like a heatwave for sure. I really think this yr. the weather has been totally strange, and many times miss the more predictable weather patterns for sure.

I guessing that it is kind of out of order for almost everyone right now. We may actually get a little bit of rain on Friday!! It's been a long time so it will be very welcome and I suppose every little bit will help with these dry conditions.

Hai! It most certainly is. The super cold weather is finally here, but there are still hot days popping up. I'm not seeing any butterflies even though many of the flowers are still hanging around. Mostly there is a large flock of turtle doves which makes me start to think of "two turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree!"

Ha ha! Yes, turtledoves and the season can certainly bring that song to mind! There were flowers and butterflies, but now it has turned cold and even some of my state saw some snow yesterday morning! Now that's crazy weather!

We have a warm climate year round here in Puerto Rico. However, December through February is considered winter here. The difference to me then summer time is that at night its a bit cooler, maybe the lowest would be 65 degrees, that I have seen. Otherwise its still warm during the day. I can't stand the cold weather at all and that is one of a few reasons I decided to live in Puerto Rico. I hope you get through the winter weather with little or no problems.

I did not used to like winter either, but once I started running I like it better. I may need to look into moving to Puerto Rico! That way the weather would stay more constant!

The weather I hate most is the spring here, which has a lot of heavy rain. Before each rain, there will be thousands of Macrotermes barneyi Ligh, a kind of termitidae, flying around anywhere with some light. I even could not turn on the light before closing the window every night. So terrible it is, dozens of termites flying into your room and they might off their wings and then crawl on your desk, your floor, your computer even your arms lol. And you have nothing to do with them except putting a pot with some water in it and waiting for them dropping there. = =!

It sounds like they are attracted to the light and water as well! At least you have some recourse. It is not fun having bugs fly in your home like that. Here we have flies and mosquitoes that really like to come in the house. If we leave our windows open without a screen on them at night millers will come in. They look sort of like a butterfly, but not as colorful and a little more fuzzy!

It's funny you mention that. I was walking over to my apartment complex's office and I passed by the rows of flowers they had planted nearby. It was like a burst of butterfly action as I walked by. The high today was 69 degrees. It's supposed to get cooler next week, but so far it's been amazing weather.

Isn't that just crazy? I can't believe there were so many butterflies out while I was running this week! I bet they are all gone by tomorrow when it turns off cold and by MOnday for sure when it'll be back in the 20s!

Last winter was unusually warm here, but this is wild. It's very warm until SUnday when an arctic front will drive the temps down and bring in a little bit of snow! It will feel much colder of course because it has been so warm!

You are so lucky I never seen any butterfly for month. I live in tropic but the weather so cold and wet. Its rainy continuously and its hard to go anywhere if you don't have a car. I think there is something wrong with our climate never in my life dealing with raining really hard plus strong wind plus thunder. Maybe its nothing special if compare with storm in your country but like I said we had mild weather and live here very comfort so its quite strange to dealing with this kind weather.

We have very severe storms here in the spring and sometimes in the fall. We are finally out of those weather patterns. It should be cooler here now but it is still warm. It will be much more like December this week than it has been the last few weeks though. Maybe it's just running a week behind! lol

We have been in a drought so not much rain here for the last 2 years. I am hoping for plenty of snow this winter. But in a drought season we do not get rain or snow! Maybe the trend will change and we'll get more snow this winter than we got last year!

Yes we are in the tropical belt of the equator, and now the summer season is going to start, but now a days one day it will be raining cats and dogs and the next day it will be hot with the sun scorching us.Anyway we are either roasted or drenched by rain.

Since you are in the tropical belt that means that even when it does rain - it's still hot! It's just that you are wet and hot after a rain! lol!!

The Spring bulbs are already swelling and we have butterflies too. We were even able to eat outside two weeks ago, although it is too fresh for that now. We have not yet reached the shortest day so the year is not on the turn! It is so easy to catch cold now because the sun is still warm enough for light clothes, but if the clouds cover it then the temperature falls immediately. We can go out at midday and be warm in a cardigan and then wish we had taken a coat when we return in the late afternoon. Crazy weather but I am going to enjoy the sun whenever it shines.

I enjoy the sunshine as well! It has turned cold here now but should warm back up over the next few days. We actually had snow yesterday. That's crezy 70 degrees one day then snow the next.

That's pretty cold too! We actually had snow yesterday so I am pretty sure all the beautiful butterflies are gone now! It won't be that warm again for awhile I think winter has finally started to settle in a little better. I hope we have a good winter!

It is really weird to see butterfly in December. I haven't met such kind of crazy weather in the place where I live.

It is very strange, it is normally too cold here in December. Actually the last two days have been very cold so I am pretty sure that they are all gone for the winter now. Maybe next spring I will see some more. Although they were sort of out of place, they sure were pretty!

I live in Bulgaria where the weather is very changeable. A few days ago the sun was shining and the temperature was 20 degrees but then we have some snow. I think that time is fairly volatile lately and can not tell when it's summer when it's winter and when there will be fall and spring. nice day!
