Afraid to undergo annual physical exam

As part of our insurance, we have the priveledge to take an annual physical exam which will cover basic exam like x-ray, blood test, urinalysis and stool analysis. I was really excited to take the exam since it will determine my health condition if I am still fit. On the other hand, I am quite scared for there might be problems that may be discovered on my health. Some of my colleagues are really afraid to undergo the said exam because they are really scared to discover if there are problems in health. How about you mylotters, are you afraid to undergo such exam in order to check your health status? Good day and stay healthy mylotters!

When I was working we had to do it compulsorily but now I postpone it as far back as I can as I too am afraid. If I have any kind of symptom I will go on the Net and try and find out what could possibly be wrong with me. I am into homoeopathy where there are hardly any side effects and one can take risks. I pick some rememdies and if I am lucky all is well. But if the symptoms continue, I have some doctor friends with whom I consult over the phone. At the moment in fact I do have a problem. I have this bloated feeling in my stomach and homoeopathy has not had any effect. . I consulted a doctor over the phone who has prescribed some tablets which I am now taking. Hopefully all should be well within the next 5 days.

I hope that you get well too. You are lucky enough to have doctor friends. I think having the said exam is nothing to be scared of because this will give your status on your health. By the way, what is homeoopathy?

I am crying because you do not know about homoeopathy It is one of the therapies that can, not only cure but also strengthen up weak areas of one's body. Do spare a few minutes and visit the following link. http://www.schwabeindia.com/Homoeopathy.html I am on my way to recovery with regard to my bloating. I think I was taking wrong potencies of homoeopathy but Rantac 150 mg (allopathy) recommended by one of my doctors is helping me a lot. Probably my gall bladder is playing up!

Since one's continued employment is tied to the results of such an exam, I can certainly see why some of your co-workers would not welcome such an intrusion... and it is an intrusion, not a privilege. I have had a bit of examination done in recent months, but it was not tied to my employment. It was for myself--to address some concerns that I had. If it had been some exam required by an employer, I would have balked at such an intrusion into my privacy. What is going on within my body should be of no concern to any employer.

I think you're missing my point about privacy concerns. While I believe in knowing what is going on with one's health, I do not want for my employer to know what is going on with my health. One's employer does not have one's best interests at heart. Perhaps, my views regarding privacy are colored by my cultural and educational background.

I think this is one of the priveledge given to us by the company. So we really need to go to the said exam and submit the results to the company. I think this is one way to monitor if we are still fit to work or if we get sick because of the work. Maybe they are afraid to know that they aren't fir to work and will be terminated from their job.

I just undergone physical examination last April before our training and so far I am doing fine. It is a good thing to have this annual examination so that we would be able to know this early if we have any problem regarding our health in order to address this thing earlier. Have a nice day! How was it?

balony! it's just a way to keep doctors paid and you broke and sick. i don't fall for the trap. if there is nothing wrong with me, i don't go to the doctor. no one can make me, or scare me into it either.

You're right MoonGypsy! Doctors today are on to money and not to the real health of their patients. I mean, yeah the're concern when the patient's health but they suggest some useless tests that is to be taken by their patients and each test is so costly. I really experienced that personally. A simple wound cost me thousands not for the medicine but because of the useless tests that I have undergone.

@aries, I agree with you that in such exam you will find if you are still fit for your work. @moongyspsy and nylaex, I somewaht agree with you because I experienced the same when my son accidentaly burned by hot water, the doctor wants us to confine him in the hospital because they said that he needs surgen for the burn evn it as already dried and feeling well. On the other hand, we just took the priviledge since the exam is free due to our health card paid by the company.

Yes, in my opinion this is good for every employee. At least we will determine if we are still fit for work. Perhaps, they are afraid that the doctor might tell them that they are already unfit to work making them loss their job.

oh, maybe that ways, but still it better to know early than later, when already having something that cannot be cured.

it very normal to be afraid but you should not be afraid if your health is on line.you just need to think that this would make you better not worse.

Good point. Instead of being depressed when they found something wrong with your health, better became proactive on how to retain your good health.

'Better the devil we know than the one we don't know', hey! Do not be scared and go for your tests. And if you need prescribed medication for whatever, take it. The sick people around us are the ones who die because they lived in denial and pretense. Medication are there to cure and help us to, hopefully enjoy a quality life. Good health to you my friend!

Actually I am not scared to take the test, whatever the result is, I am prepared for it. I know that even I got a bit problem on my health, it is still the best to know it and correct it. I was just wondering why some of my colleagues are really afraid to take the test.

I get a physical exam every year and I'm happy to because if there's a health problem I will get to have it taken care of. If you don't know your not healthy it's not good.

Yes, this will make us take care of ourself. This will also help us determine if we are still fit to work in our current working environment.

You should be afraid if you don't know what's happening inside your body. You are very fortunate to have a chance to have a physical exam. If I were you, you should not be afraid and should always go for it. Remember, there are a lot of sick people in the world who needs a check up more than you do, but they don't have the money, so be thankful that you have that chance to have a physical exam and go for it. :)

I agree with you, having annual physical exam is not given to everyone. That is a great opportunity to monitor our health. Perhaps, they are afraid because they know that they have a problem with their health. Like if you are smoking, you will get a high chane of having lung or respiratory problem.

To be honest, I never take those physical exams ever since I got my own health insurance. Somehow I just don't got the time to do the regular check up on my own, don't know why, or maybe I am as scared as you are right now. Anyway, I will spare a time to go for such examination, and I should do a something for my own personal health too, I guess.

I think there are nothing to be scared of when it come to physical exam unless you did something that might affect your health and may appear on the exam. However, it wil be good enough since we will detemine if something wrong with our health earlier rather than knowing it when it is too late.

It can be scary to go to the doctor and find out if there's something wrong. There's also the possibility that with routine check ups, certain problems can be found in time to be fully treated. The sooner you get checked out for problems, the sooner you can be treated and hopefully become healthy again.
• Philippines

That is one of the purpose of the said exam. It will determine if you have something in your health, whether good or bad. If good, no problem. If bad, it will be good since you identify it earlier and you will do things to get you back to the track.

We were all excited when we had our annual physical exam last July. That's because it's a bit different from our previous usual ones. It was a thorough one, with an abdominal ultrasound. We were happy because at least, through that our physical as well as health being was determined. For those who were discovered to have this and that, were also happy that at least they will be able to arrest the sickness before it gets worse.
• Philippines
13 Dec 12
That is the right attitude. If they found you something unusual on your health, be happy at least you will knew it before it became worst. I think in our case, ultrasound as well as ECG and papsmear (for women) are only recommended for 35 years old and above. However, depending on the doctors advice, others may got the same tests.

I am nurse and I am also a bit afraid to do annual check-ups and like your your reason I don't want to undergo such test because I might find an illness and something wrong with my body. But because, its for free, the annual check-ups. I will surely go for it and pray to God nothing bad will happen to me. I want to advise you to take the annual physical exam especially when you are getting older. The better the detection the better the cure or should I say the earlier the cure.

I agree with you. It is really better to determine problems when they are not yet serious. This will give us more time to cure and back to our healthy status.

Actually you no need to worry about that at all and the regarding to the physical problem, the earlier you find out,the easier you can cure it. And I think someone really worry about it are those without the health insurance,do you think so?So actually you are lucky from this point of view.

I agree with you. There are some poeple that cannot afford to take the said exam and we are given with this one for free. We are very lucky to have this and we should not think of being afraid of the said exxam results.

I am not afraid to take that all over physical exam. I want to know if I have a sickness as early as I can so that I can prevent or I can be warned myself about any diseases. It is better than to be surprised that I have already diseases and it is already severe.

Yes, you are right. This is to determine if you have some health problem. Like in my case, I am not aware that there is a slight infection in found in my urine and I was given immediate medication to prevent it from getting more serious problem.

i don't mess around with doctors like that. you are right. i am too scared about if they are going to tell me i have some horrible disease, when i feel perfectly fine. why go around getting things checked if there is nothing wrong. i never understood that concept. if you hang around barber shops long enough, you will eventually get a hair cut. if you hang around doctors long enough, you will eventually get a disease. i don't know, that's just me. doctors are paid for people being sick.

This is to determine if we are still fit to work. If not, they will give us chance to take medications. This is part of the insurance given to us by the company. Some of us are afraid to know the truth even they know that they are still fit. Maybe they are afraid to know if they are unfit already and will loss their job.

That is the trouble with some people. They get scared even before really knowing the truth. When you think about it more closely, what can your fear do if you did have any disease? Wouldn't you want to live longer and be with your loved ones? I think that if you do not value yourself, atleast value the love that your friends and relatives have for you.

I agree with you, the more you think that you are sick, the more it will happen. Staying positive is the best option. Like what you said, they are afraid to know the truth.

Well, it would be a lot scarier if you know that you did something quite undesirable to your body a few months ago. If you keep on thinking of it, you'll get more anxious and sooner, you'll begin to think that somehow there really is something wrong with your body. You know, just take the physical exam. After all, no one else would benefit from it but you. If you find out, through the results that there are some discrepancies in your body, you might as well take steps on how you could make it okay. That can even help you save your life.

You are right, I am always excited to take the annual exam. In fact I was the one who reminds our HR that we must have the schedule for the annual exam already.
