How do you lose weight?

United States

I haven't ever really stuck to a diet and routine of exercise. I use to be smaller but I've gained some weight. I'm hoping though to try to lose some weight. It's easier said than done and it takes time to lose weight in a healthy way. I'm hoping to eat more fruits and vegetables and get some exercise in. I hope I can stick with it and see results.

The best way to lose weight is to maintain a balance between proper diet and exercise. Everyone wants to focus on diet and it's true that diet is important, but exercise should not be overlooked. A healthy diet of complex carbs (oatmeal, rice, quinoa) with fresh fruits and vegetables paired with daily exercise (at least 30 minutes) will get you where you want to be. One should also consume enough water. So... 1.) Write down a goal weight you want to be. I want to be 130 pounds by April 1st is a specific goal with a deadline attached to it. 2.) Drink half your body weight in water daily. 3.) Perform cadio (for the heart and lungs at least three times a week for at least thirty minutes each session). 4.) Strength training at least two days a week. If you don't have weights lift soup cans, fill some jugs with water, etc..be creative. 5.) You are on target with the fruits and vegetables. These should make up the majority of your diet. 6.) Do NOT skip meals. Eat often and stay away from processed foods and all junk food. It's all about lifestyle change and keeping it permanent. We all struggle with this, I know I do. Good luck.

Yeah I agree with what your saying. It is important to have a balance diet as well as exercise. I'm working on exercising for thirty minutes a day for five days a week. Yeah staying away from processed foods is a must. Little by little I'm improving.

I wish you the best of luck with losing weight! When I have lost weight in the past I just made my portions smaller, did not snack, stopped drinking soda and I never ate after 7pm. I also would take daily walks... All of that combined I did lose weight. So, I hope you can lose the weight you want to lose! =)

Thanks! So far I have been doing good with limiting my portion sizes. I have also been trying to snack on fruits and vegetables if I feel hungry. I will have to stop eating after seven. Which shouldn't be to hard as long as I have super ready right when my husband gets home. I'm also going to try to drink more water. Everyone always says how good water is for us. But I would much rather have a soda. It just taste so much better.

Your welcome and I am so glad your doing good so far! =) Yeah it is SO bad to eat after 7pm honestly, so many people do that and the food just sits in your stomach because your not working it off, your sleeping! Lol. I understand the soda gets me too, I absolutely HATE water. I hate anything without any flavor, Lol. But soda is really fattening even though it tastes really good. I don't eat vegetables at all so that one is out the window for me but I do love fruits so when I am trying to lose weight I do go for those. =)

Maybe you can share with everyone your height and weight. Who knows you might be in the ideal BMI but think that you are carrying some excessive fats. Based on your diet and plans to exercise, you should be on the way to losing a few pounds. But remember to choose exercise that burns your calories faster like aerobics and swimming.

Thanks! I hope that I will be able to see results soon. Unfortunately I'm not at my ideal BMI I'm very short and so my weight would be considered overweight. But I'm not really big though. Hopefully little by little I will see the pounds disappear.

Now that I have become more conscientious about food I have noticed that we and most people eat a lot more grains, and starchy food. So I will have to be careful about that. Once we go to the grocery store again I will feel a little better because I will be able to get more fruits and vegetables.

Good luck Dominique. I started out a week ago but I'm not trying to lose weight just trying to get in shape and stay fit. My husband is trying to lose weight and get into shape his police test because he is trying to become a police officer.

Yeah it's good to continue to workout regularly even if we are in shape. It keeps us healthy and we feel good about ourselves. I hope that your husband is able to lose the weight he needs to lose in order for his police test. That is great that he wants to be a police officer.

I hate working out and it never makes me feel good when I work out. I've been working out since I was 9 year old so it's more like a chore to me then anything else. He doesn't need to lose weight to pass the test he needs to be able to run a mile in 18 minutes so that is what he is working on.

Yeah I will have to work on the preventing calcium loss from my bones. But I need to lose weight. It is important for me. It is taking time but everything that is worthwhile takes time. So I will have to keep working at it and pushing my body harder.

That is awesome! I'm so happy for you. I hope that I will be able to lose weight like that. Right now I weigh 140. I hope to get down to 120 or whatever makes me look the best. So it would be great if I start seeing results like that. I will be very happy then. Giving up the soda would be very hard for me. I love to drink Pepsi every day. But I have been working on drinking more water.

If you make healthy eating and exercise a permanent part of your life, you should not only lose the weight but also stay about the weight you desire. When I say "healthy," I am referring to a plant-oriented diet; most, if not all, of your meals should be built around fresh fruits and veggies as the base. That should be where you start--not an afterthought to be tacked on as a mere "side." Diets don't work. Permanent lifestyle changes do.

Yeah I agree with you. I have been working on eating mainly fruits and vegetables. I'm sure that this will help me a great deal in the long run. I would like to get my weight back to where it was. My husband has always been a really skinny person when I told him how much I weigh he laughed at me. Which I didn't think was funny because I never make fun of him for not being able to gain weight when he would like to be bigger. But I'm going to work on my weigh for myself and not for him. It's just something I would like to do for myself. Because I use to be small before I had my daughter.

I stopped drinking soda and artificial fruit juices. At first it was so hard because they have been part of my diet for many years since I was a child, and the cravings got real bad but as I get used to it, it became easier. I made a rule not to drink them at home. But I did let myself drink some if I was eating out. I also stuck to a regular exercise routine--Turbofire. It's a program that let's you eat as much as your body needs. I did lose a lot of weight maybe 15 lbs in 3 months. I did not want to lose the weight too abruptly and I was afraid of overtaxing myself. The first few sessions were tiring. It's true that you have to be in a very healthy state if you want that program. I did prepare for it for two months. I started with three times a week 20 min walk-run-walk cycle and worked up to a 5-days a week 45 min walk-run-walk routine. But as they say any exercise is better than nothing. Find a program that works for you. Something that makes you feel energized and not bored.

Yeah giving up soda would be very hard. I really do love my pepsi. But I've been trying to drink more water and fruit smoothies and at times that limits my craving for a soda since I already fill full. That is great that you were able to lose that much weight. I'm hoping to lose 20-30 lbs but I will just have to keep at it slowly and see what happens.

I'm glad to hear that your mom is enjoying the foods she eats while she is dieting. I'm planning to eat fruits and vegetables. That shouldn't be so bad for me. I like fruits and vegetables I know are good for me so I can snack on those when I need to. Thanks for sharing.

Wouldn't it be great if it were that easy! I wouldn't definitely be in skinny in no time if there was a pill for it. Unfortunately though it requires work and effort on our part. It would be so nice if I had more free time. It seems I'm always so busy doing something whether it's my job outside the house, working online, taking care of my daughter, taking care of the home and spending time with my husband it seems I have very little time for myself to get my exercise in.

Hi Dominique25, I used to be plus sized but I managed to shed off the unwanted pounds and be healthy. While there are some days when I gained couple of pounds from my normal weight, I always make it a point to be active so that the calories I burn is more than the calories I consumed.
• United States

I agree with you it is good for us to be active. It really does help us to lose weight or to at least stay in shape if we are where we would like to be. I hope that I will be able to lose 20 lbs. That would be nice for me. Time will tell for me though if I'm able to get this weight off. It would be nice though to start seeing results.

The age old question of how to lose weight. Your way is go but the best way is to jog 20 minutes a day and eat healthier. You'll be burning the fat of in no time.

Thanks! I appreciate it. I hope that I will be able to exercise more. I just have to find an open slot where I can do it. Maybe I will have to start getting up earlier or something.

Eating less doesn't always make you lose weight. You could still stick with your normal diet, you just have to add more exercise. And one more thing, exercise doesn't always mean you'll have to go to the gym everyday or do those exercise routines. You could just do simple things. Do the chores, walk more, or anything you could think of.

Thanks I appreciate your suggestions. For me i think that it will have to be a combination of both eating less and exercising more. I do a lot of things around the house because I'm the only one who does them but it doesn't help me lose weight. So I have to start doing things differently so that I will see results.

How much you weigh? If you feel you are over weight, you can do exercises, take less sweets and starchy foods, but let me tell you, if it is herditary, you may not be able to lose much best of luck.. Thanks for this discussion.

It's very hard to lose weight especially if the temptations are everywhere and you are so used in being a couch potato. It's hard to exercise especially this time of cold weather. And to think that Christmas is approaching and also New Year. I just hope I can discipline myself like you to get ready for the summer.

I agree with you that with this cold weather it is very hard to exercise. I'm hoping though to order a kids exercise dvd that way my daughter and I can exercise to it together. There really are temptations everywhere. And food that is bad for us is generally better tasting so that makes it so hard to resist.
