I ruined my win7 OS by accident, and I use Ubuntu instead now. I find that Ubuntu is far more faster than win7 is! I cannot feel any halt now! It's just amazing! I open the Process Manager to see the status of my PC. Only 350M RAM has been used! I have opened the Firefox, software center, file explorer, a card game and the shell window, but my PC is still very fast! God, why did I have to use windows with a slow speed and a high price! Maybe you should try it right now! Let's begin with Ubuntu!

Sometimes i also use Linux( Linux Mint, Fedora, StartOS, Linux Deepin etc). I also think Linux is great, many of them are free, with great performances, attractive appearance, elegant desktop background, etc. Linux is one of my favorite OS.

Thanks a lot for share these links! ^_^ It's really hard to find them in my countries...and I just need to install a U disk based Linux! I am too lucky! Now I love Ubuntu even more than when I started this discussion, as the more I learn, the more I find it easy to use. Yesterday I downloaded a software called Matlab, and the speed was almost 8M/s! God, the software source is too good! Maybe it's because there are just a little people who are using Ubuntu. ^_^

Dear! I myself also using windows professional operating system 7 since last one year. Sometimes i found some sort of troubles with that operating as you said in your words. Sometimes it getting stopped automatically without doing anything on the system. Shall i use Ubuntu instead the present one? Let me know the special features in that. How many commands will be there to operate the system regularly. Is it easy way to run it or not? Are there any other os which is better than this one?... How much ram should i install to run Ubuntu OS on the system. Presently I have only 512 Ram on my PC. Is it sufficient or not?... Please let me know the minimum configuration to have that os on my system.

Hi, Being Linux based, Ubuntu is great besides being a freeware. It is virus free too, most virus are designed to attack Windows OS, I don't know why. The thing that kept me from using it is that some of the software I have been used to work on don't go well with it so I have to stick to Windows for a while longer. It shall be a whole new learning process to migrate from one tho the other and I can't afford the time yet. True there are equivalent mapping, graphic designing and word processing softwares out there but I find it strange the new interface and it takes a lot of time to get used to them.

I've used Ubuntu for several days, and I get to know something I didn't know before. There is a absolutely different thinking in Ubuntu compared with Windows. I used to use windows for almost ten years, and I know now how stupid I am to use win for such a long time. Ubuntu is far more convenient, easier, far more efficient than windows is, even windows7. That's what I feel now, though it used to be impossible for me to believe that Ubuntu is better. I know you can't agree with me now, but it doesn't matter ;) It's hard to believe unless you try it yourself. I have only a Ubuntu in my PC now. Windows is stupid but expensive for me now. DIY everything, or just use all convenience in Ubuntu, it's all up to you, not the OS, which is quite different from Windows ;) Yes, it's hard to change to Ubuntu. I have also experienced that difficulty. ;) To find the OS that best suits you is maybe the most practical way ;) good day!

After I enter the desktop, only 190 ram is used. Now I am listening to music, surfing the Internet, and edit my DOC, but I only use 320M ram. Oh, also a PDF file is opened... So 512 is absolutely enough for Ubuntu10. Umm, the only problem to me to use Ubuntu is that, many software don't have their corresponding ubuntu version, so .. . such as PS, PE, VS, but for most of us, it's not a problem at all, as we hardly need to use these things. Another problem is that there is not many games in this os, and the game you can play is just Mines, RedCars, Sudoku, and other small 'stupid' games. Your RAM is really not enough for win7 ;) I have also win7 in my PC now, and after I lanch win7, almost 800M RAM is used... Other os that's proper for you PC is maybe winxp, other branch os of Linux, but Ubuntu is certainly your best choice. Software is a big problem for Ubuntu. I have only installed QQ( like MSN), PPS, chrome. Other softwares are all installed with OS, such as Rhythmbox, Movie Player, OpenOffice, Software Center, games, System Monitor, Terminal, Calculator, Notes, Sound Records, Gedit and so on so on!!! Enough for us to use without a shell. But of course, if you are able to use shell, you will find Ubuntu more easier to use than windows. Think about it!

Microsoft Windows does use a vast amount of system resources compared to Linux. Linux, and Ubuntu is particular, are becoming increasingly popular as time passes. The main reason for Windows having it's popularity is that it was the first one to use a Graphic User Interface, which allows inexperienced computer users to easily get accustomed to the system. Linux was a command line program for many years, so if you did not understand coding then it was quite a problem. Now that Linux can easily be used in the same manner it is far more user friendly than it was, but the majority of users have simply become accustomed to Windows. However, despite the user friendly scenario Linux still requires command line input for many tasks and when I use Ubuntu I use quite a lot of command line during the average day.

Indeed you are right. But as far as I know, windows1.0 is not the first OS that used GUI ;). Windows1.0 put an end to MS Dos, as it's designed well, easy to use, and so it got popular immediately! I'm not bad at coding, so it's just easy and comfortable for me to use the shell in Ubuntu, though most of the time I use my mouse only... Ubuntu 10.0 version is really good. But still, many problems there. Many famous and necessary softwares don't have their Linux version, many famous games included, it's a big problem and the most serious problem I think that prevent Ubuntu to defeat Microsoft. Ubuntu is a free platform, it's hard to make money in it, so many companies don't consider it necessary or profitable to develop a Linux version for their products... Thank all programmers who contributed, who is contributing and who will contribute to Linux development!

I used to use Windows, now its Linux Ubuntu all the way! No worries about being hacked; no worries about protecting the registry or host file as in Windows.Uses way less memory/RAM. Windows is garbage- Linux rulez!

I think it's because I use a VM, but Ubuntu feels slow to me. Well, many softwares out there are for Windows and Mac and other commercial OSs. If only markets connect with Linux more, then I would probably start using Ubuntu 100% of the time.

Yes, software resources are the real problem for Ubuntu! maybe the cost of 'free', I think. But it's enough for me now ;) To run ubuntu in a VM is really not a good idea, except that your PC is very very good. I have once tried to run it in Virtual PC, but the speed is intolerable. I reinstalled the win7 after it's breakdown. The only reason is that I have to use PS.... There are no PS for Ubuntu. And once there be, I'll remove win7 immediately without any hesitation! But after all, it's not real, and I have to still use windows...

My school library is using ubuntu and it is very slow. I am not used to it and I find it very difficult to use. I still prefer XP or Win7.

Almost everybody prefers windows... Different version of Ubuntu has different performance on different machines, so your experence depends on many factors. I don't know why the ubuntu you use is slow, maybe it's caused by the poor machine condition... To begin with, I cannot tolerate Ubuntu, either. But at least, it's so fast. And just after several hours, I got used to it. There are not much differences between windows and Ubuntu in GUI. But the shell in Ubuntu is much stronger than cmd in windows. And the requirement of Ubuntu is much lower. wish you happy time with windows!

Well that is great to hear that u have got out of the trouble and thanks to Ubuntu that u are able to operate your computer faster and enjoying in the process. I know it really gets on your nerves whenever your computer or laptop does not run as per your expectations and it is then that we have to trace the root cause of this issue and get it sorted out as soon as possible. What say?
