Why are otherwise adorable children so scary in horror films?

My partner and I are pretty big movie buffs in general and within that, we host an appreciation for horror flicks. Tonight, we watched Case 39 which was a film starring a young, adorable ten year old girl who happened to be possessed. She looked as a child looks-but she was horrifying. Why? There is a scene where she is spinning on a rotating chair. I have been around young children and this is not out of the realm of things they would do by any means, but in the context of a horror flick-it's terrifying. Same thing goes for the movie Hide and Seek- we were far more afraid of Dakota Fanning's stare than the fact that she had a psychotic imaginary friend. And finally The Sixth Sense, I don't think people were scared of Cole, per se, but he was still quite eerie. Why? Is it the paleness they often adorn-- no because some children are pale and we all seem to deal with that just fine. Is it makeup, lightening, the music? What is it about these children who would be otherwise adorable that becomes outright creepy in horror films? Is it the context of watching a horror film? I can't imagine that an audience could be so easily manipulated especially since, again, with Hide and Seek, audiences were much more afraid of Dakota Fanning who wasn't really doing much (in terms of violence or evil) than the real threat of a psycho leaving bloody messages around the house. So, what is it about kids that freak us adults out?

They would feel scared because the theme of the movie is really scary for some children. During my childhood years! I really like watching horror films until now. I do think they have their interest to a certain genre of films.

Thank you for your response but I was actually asking why children are so scary for adults in horror films since they are otherwise cute. I didn't mean for the question to be confusing. I apologize if it didn't make sense!

It's the twist and incongruence that create the feeling of terror. Children are supposed to be innocent and lovable but when you see them in a different scenario, the element of shock and terror would follow. It's the sudden transition that often shocks the viewers.

I actually really agree. I think it's about the unexpected. But more than that, children pretty much universally represent innocence, beauty, hope and so to have them be possessed or evil in opposition is truly terrifying. I also read that an adults worst fear is their child being a stranger to them... I think this is another element played on in horror films.

Horror films are about implementing scare tactics while still being entertaining. I think it's about the element of surprise. We do not usually expect children to be scary in horror films, which can help create scenes of fright. We fear the unknown because we do not know what is coming. Horror movies would be very dull if they were predictable. When things are unpredictable in movies, they make us cringe and wait in suspense for the upcoming scene.

I agree that horror films rely on the element of surprise. Though I'm not sure I agree that we don't expect children to be scary in horror films. On the contrary when I watch horror flicks with my friends and we see a child in it, we joke: 'Oh no, a child. You know that's not good. They're definitely going to be creepy!' because it has become such a motif utilized in films. Maybe it's more that, we don't experience children being creepy in life? Maybe that's what you meant.

i love horror movies and especially horror movies that involve ghosts and the paranormal. Since i love the paranormal so much i also watch all the shows like paranormal witness and an american haunting. one thing that they mention a lot in those shows is that demonic spirits disguise themselves as children to make people trust them. i guess it depends if you believe in that kind of thing but that was just something i remember the "experts" saying on the shows
