Where did it all begin?

This thing about women being less capable - where did it all begin? Atleast in my family I never saw it. My mother of ancient times always was consuslted by my father on so many issues. She 'wore the pants' so to say. Even me and my sisters had total freedom to use our brain, our talents, our capacity to run our home on smooth wheels with full co-operation from the men folk. So who started this all? Where did it begin?

I think it was back when property was "owned" by 'being the biggest lion in the den.' That, and pregnancy-etc. is said to render a woman 'practically useless' in every non-motherhood aspect. That &--back before 'medicine' got everything under control--'womanly matters' made women unreliable in the workplace. Besides, 'girls are yucky!' (granted, we men LIKE some womanly delights; but work is no place for that!)

I might repeat the famous quote "The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world" I wonder at what point in time in our life this was discovered. This more than proves the fact that women are not unreliable to use your own words. How can anyone who is unreliable rule the world! The question still remains while on the one hand women are supposed to rule the world and yet on the other hand they are considered lesser mortals.

"Reliability" is not 'strength' or 'power to move or -manipulate'; reliability is simply 'the practice of being there on time and staying there as long as needed and doing what you're told to do the way you're told to do it'---'predictability.' Employers don't want 'a rare breed whose service is good when the lucky time comes by that she is not otherwise involved (with matters of feminine hygiene),' they want someone 'reliable.'

Keeping someone on the job because they are available unlike women who would be busy with their responsibilities should not be the reason for women to be considered less reliable. They too, from the beginning of time, had responsibilities that should have been considered equal with men. But why was this not considered is the question here.

Without going into great detail,I think it is religion, but that is just me. Not EVERY religion, just some.

In the good old days every woman was treated as a lesser mortal and that being the case religion as you pointed out could not be the reason. We are now in the year 2013 and do see a sweeping change in that women have moved forward but some as you say are bound by religious norms. The question therefore still remains. Where did it begin?

Does that mean that in some areas people have gone against religion and given the status a woman truly deserves!

My answer is...I don't know, lol. Just curious, why do you think religion cannot be the reason? I guess it depends on what you believe. Man has worshiped some form of "God" since his creation, has he not? Humans have looked to the stars, or skies or heavens for answers since they were created, therefore is not religion as old as man? And if religion is as old as man, is it not possible that religion is the source?

This must have begun from our ancient agricultural system allknowing .It is still prevalent in rural areas . I have seen my grandfathers born in 1900 and they did not call their wives less capable. The wives found it easier to abide by the husbands' decisions because theirs were very big families and this strategy suited them also.In my case also I saw my mother and she was not subjugated in any way. She had full freedom in her affairs. But I do not think she had any say in her husband's. I also feel that money had a role to play in this as to who brought home the bread. This naturally gave the men the power to dictate terms .With increasing education and awareness of women this system has toned down quite a bit.Still it would be felt where there is a significant status difference between a couple and it can be either way.Which woman who earns more than her husband or performs better would allow herself to be called less capable? I feel it is money that decides this all, moreso in these days.

Greater physical strength , the capacity to garner resources for a family must have been the root cause of it all.It would have clearly designated roles to play and everything else would have followed.

Allknowing! Women are survivors and men know it .THere is no unfairness at all because God has made us better .Poor men need to feel bad about the unfairness of it all because they know that the hand that rocks the cradle does rule the world.

So it looks like it just happened with no formal introduction of a law that men rule over women! You think it is money - who brought the dough kind of situation? All because men were physically strong and could do those jobs that women could not. Seems unfair to me. And yet - "The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world" kala

Great Discussion In my family too, my mom has always been the pillar of the house. Even my maternal grandmother was the same and for me, today, my wife is the most important person. I think, it all began somewhere when some people started mixing personal interests with religion, with the society, and the male dominance took the front seat. In Indian scenario, this is what has been happening since years now. I think, more instances have cropped up after the Independence - where we placed wrong people to rule us and still continue getting power to those people who are more concerned about their own goods - they have manipulated almost everything to their ways and millions have followed them to word

The Taj Mahal was constructed in the memory of a loved one but I don't think that loved one was treated as equal. Some adored women but never kept them on par. Where did this idea of giving women the second place all begin? You have said about the women folk in your life got the place that they rightly deserved but you have not answered my question! The respondent in Box No. 1 above attributes it to physical strength. Do you agree with that user?

as I am surrounded by too many things and am confused with words). You have only stated how women have been treated but you have not said why. I get the feeling that in the good old days when manual labour was the main source for earning one's bread which only men could do that got prominence and a woman's role - an important one at that - was swept under the carpet. As far as religion goes there too what could be the likely reason for religion to treat women as lesser mortals?

but you have not answered my question! Well I think I pointed out two reasons when I said - Politics and Interpreters of Religion. I dont think the physical strength has to do much. Yes, it might be on occasions when you hear and see physical violence against them, but then, there are just a few such instances. The many men have started taking women as objects - and that is where the problem lies. Our Indian movies too have almost always showcased women as some object which can be won over by wrong doings - many actors have persisted in teasing their lady love, and have won their love in the movies. and this definitely sends wrong messages to the society. Similarly, the women continue to be projected merely as s-x objects - in many movies which again sends wrong messages. Now women allowing to them be used for the sake of money or whatever reasons, is wrong again... so it is definitely quite impossible to pinpoint at one instance and say this is where things started getting wrong. There has been a long chain of incidents which is responsible for sending out and establishing the wrong reasons and wrong impressions. (hope I make some sense here, as I am surrounded by too many things and am confused with words).

I don't know where it began but there are still a lot of people that actually believe women are only meant for the kitchen and to have babies... I know most women are just as able as men to work and take care of things.

Could religion be the cause? But the way things have evolved for women now, at a global level what started it and what triggered this change is still confusing.

Yes, even i don't know where it got started. I observed as woman play very good role in many things especially decision making process or understanding or analyzing any situation in life.

The response in box No.1 seems one reason. But over a period of time this has changed for many women in many parts of the world while there are women still who are treated as lesser mortals. So. What is the main reason?

My mother and my women siblings are very capable and are all working and career women. Maybe ancient times and I think there are still countries wherein women do not have the same rights as men like some countries in the Middle East. Here in our country during ancient times, women are for marrying only and given to other families to pay their debt. Maybe because it's really hard work before wherein a person must use physical strength to work. And women are more into serving their husbands and do household chores. At least it's different now and the capabilities of women are now seen.

i see your point. May be in the good old days only hard labour was available for earning one's bread and therefore this segregation about women staying at home and the men working. But it has now evolved in several countries and women are considered equal. Why is it that some countries are still lagging behind?
