Anyone have a tried and true type of dip or dressing they like to make? I've wanted to make a lil something from scratch instead of ala bottle but not sure where to start. Not sure how long homemade will last or best way to store it. As I'm feeling a lil guilty as I had to close work tonight and I always like a lil something while I wind down. Tonight I had baby carrots and some poppy seed dressing.... carrots are pretty guilt free but the dressing isn't. I was going to make my fav dip of avacado + salsa + salt/pepper but my avacado is in need of composting :( Just looking if someone has some tried and true healthy ideas?

For me I have never tried creating my own dips since there are so many ready made in stores. buying is just OK as long as you are satisfied by the taste.

One idea would be to take sour cream and mix in it an onion powder soup. It something super simple, cheap and delicious. Another one that I like is tuna "salad". Open a tuna can, mix with mayo and some onion if you like. Super delicious. Or open a can of sardines, mix them with cream cheese + onions chopped thin.Oh, I made myself so hungry, I'll have to go and prepare one of them myself, right now! have fun!

One of my favorite dips is very simple and cheap. I like Walmart black bean and corn salsa mixed with refried beans. You can make it as soupy or thick as you want. So much you can do with it, too. You can put cheese on top and heat it up. You can heat it up with some cream cheese mixed into it to make it a bit richer and exotic. You can use it on hot dogs, with pasta, or just dip chips or raw vegetables in it. I have a couple other great dips but they are high calories and high cost. So this is the one I've preferred for awhile now!

Try hummus. It's very healthy, has protein and all that. Tastes really good. If you really want you can make it at home but you'd have to search the recipe.

As a child I remember the measurements for salad dressing, two thirds oil to one third vinigar and then add flavorings, herbs, salt and pepper. This gets stored in the frig in a small bottle that is easy to shake. I add dill, or Italian herbs, a little mustard, fresh ground black pepper and salt. If I want creamy dressing I add mayo. But I don't like to store a dressing with mayo, it often has eggs in it and I would only serve this freshly made.
