"No I am not hungry"

When any one is upset the first thing that happens is that they lose their appetite. I sometimes wonder what connection there is between hunger and sadness. We feel hungry when there is nothing in the stomach which is normal and this with a good appetite we will eat with relish. Are you a victim of this or can you atleast explain what causes this condition? Or could it also be that you are the lucky one in that nothing disturbs your hunger and eat your food at the right time no matter how depressed you are?

It is obviously a case of our emotions gaining control over our body functions.THe brain instead of signalling for food concentrates more on our feelings and emotions take over intellect.Similarly, when you are concerned excessively ,afraid or far too busy you do not even realise the taste of what you eat unless it is totally unpalatable and chokes you.

-True allknowing; I have also heard of depression causing hunger. Probably our appetite changes with our priorities. SOme people may have food so much on their mind that they eat no matter what. There are others who forget about food even when they have some work.

But kala different people react differently. Some eat no matter what the situation, some as I said lose their appetite and some eat more when they are depressed. There is the brain, the tongue and the stomach involvlle each behave differently with different people. I am still confused!

I'm not sure why people lose their appetite when they are upset. I am one of those people who will lose their appetite once someone makes me upset. I don't know, even though I know I'm hungry and I know I hadn't eaten anything, I do tend to lose my appetite.

Whoever can rectify this situation would be a candidate for the Nobel prize I bet Most of us come under this category. There will be very few who will not be affected or there will be some who would hog away under such circumstances!

It is almost like we hold the grudge against the food rather than the person!

Distressed? - When a person is upset, low, distressed, depressed, they might neglect themselves; that happens to me.
Personally, if I'm deeply distressed and/or depressed, I'll tend to neglect myself, and that can include eating. I might put off eating, and drink a lot of tea or coffee, or just sit in front of the computer, or spend hours on the phone to a close friend pouring my problems out. For me, the normal routines and comforts of life can go out the window: so I just can't sit down and relax and eat. Finally I might eat something, but not usually in a relaxed way, just in order to satisfy hunger. And then try and sleep: but it's often hard for me to sleep if I'm upset. If I'm feeling low without great distress I might eat and then try and grab a nap, but none of it will be done with any great enthusiasm. I need to be pretty content and at peace to enjoy eating.

I'm not sure, maybe we become merely functional in a sense, until our ability to enjoy has been restored.

Eating is a need and not a luxury sadly and that being the case it is unfortunate that our system goes haywire when we are distressed or depressed. We cease to exist so to say. It is not just not eating but even having fun takes a back seat. I wonder why!

I am obe of those people who really doesn't have the appetite to eat when there are a,lot of things going through my head. I feel like I need to finish some tadk before I indulge myself with anything. Same goes when I am depressed. Well, it may somehow look like my way of malibg me feel tough. I would rather just watch tv and immerse myself with all the tv shows that I can watch. I can feel the hunger, but I do not have the will to eat.

Hunger, appetite and the will to eat should be there together. If one of them is missing then one will not eat. If you are hungry but you have no appetite, if you have an appetite but you are not hungry and finally for rare people such as you one is hungry, has an appetite but has no will to eat. The moral of the story is it is not just enough for the stomach to be empty for wanting to eat. I find this all strange! Stomach is empty, one is hungry and one has the will to eat - beautiful combination no matter what problems one faces in life. But how to achieve this?

I would get like this sometimes but not as often any more. I used to be really bad about it when I was young, a little kid. I think I was so bad about eating because all of the stress around me disturbed me and still does at times. For me this happens when my mind is overwhelmed or consumed with stressful thoughts.

I also used to be like this but I have overcome this although when I organise parties I simply cannot touch food even now! Anyway why our mental condition should affect our appetite intrigues me!

It is a mystery to me too! It is odd that our stomachs though empty don't crave food sometimes for some mental reason unconnected with our stomachs...

I experience one time I get so depress that I even don't want to touch any food in our table. But I cant help it.. I usually eat when I get sad or depress. Maybe it varies from person to person if they want or not to eat. Our mind controls every act that we do. Its only mind over body. Try to eat. Do not get yourself hungry or else you may have an peptic ulcer.

You must be forcing yourself to eat. There is a big difference between relishing the food and eating it because one has to.

But I wonder what we force down our throat would nurture our body as would a normal meal?

I know the practice of "forcing" one's self to eat as I have from time to time so as not to also become physically ill while I am mentally ill.

I think that being depressed or upset about something would curve me away from eating but not for long....I am one of those that bounces back to food very easily.

Bouncing back to food really means finding your bearings. Rather than mulling it is better to move on, at the same time searching for solutions with a cool head.

Hi allknowing My situation is a bit different. when I am sad, I feel more hungry and like you I have never been able to identify why all this happens! I think, when we are sad and depressed, the brain sends out wrong signals to the tummy and taste buds...

We both have some genes in common...lets start searching for our family tree. :)

Instead of connecting the tongue, stomach and appetite only something went wrong somewhere in that one now has to deal with emotions too! And as you have pointed out it seems it is all connected with ones genes!

That is quite weird, we can't eat if we are angry/upset or we are in love.. 2 very opposite feelings, but the same reaction. Our tummy is quite weird, maybe anything too much of any feeling will make us lose our appetite.. I cannot eat when i am feeling anxious though or angry..

EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED TO OUR BRAIN IF WE THINK OF something like anger or.extreme happiness we tend to forget.other things

Not everything gets affected that which is connected with our brain and certainly not as commonly as losing one's appetite when one is unhappy.

That's good for you eagle... Not being able to eat while one is under stress will worsen the situation. There has to be some way to get over this condition as many are badly affected by this.

Eating rather than not is a better solution and will probably help you feel better sooner rather than later! I agree. Though without exercise the other eating will cause weight gain but alas, I would take the weight gain over the depression...

If I feeling blue and too down to face the bad circumstances. I can't eat that much, I don't have the drive to eat any meals. For some, they eat so vigorously. They put all the sentiments by eating beyond the normal limit of meals.

You too!! Most feel that way. But why? It should be just between hunger, appetite and the stomach. But no. Emotions control everything. Something serious needs to be done but what it is no one knows!
