I can't tolerate ice cold liquids anymore

For years I have been drinking either liquids at room temperature or cold out if the fridge. I have a 28 ounce cup filled with Crystal Light. I can't drink it very well until it warms up some. I will leave it out for hours and drink on it as desired. If it is ice cold it kind of hurts my swallowing mechanism. I like to make frozen fruit smoothies. I can still drink them but it takes me longer. Maybe it's due to aging. Has anyone else become intolerant of cold liquids? It is the same in the summer. I don't care for ice. If I get an iced diet Coke at Sonics I will never drink but a few swallows. I just can't tolerate the cold in my throat. Your thoughts?

A general advice would be to drink water at room temperature, and only water. The sodas have either a lot of sugar or artificial sweeteners, one of them is aspartame that can cause severe health problems. http://aspartame.mercola.com/ I don't feel good if I drink cold water - If I have to do it, I only take small sips or wait till it gets a bit warmer.

Well, I understand you, but maybe there would be a better sweetener. Just a little honey or maybe Stevia?? I don't know much about it but maybe there is some info on the net..?? I sometimes take a little green tea in the water to make it taste better.. Wish you better health...

Yeah, I know about aspertame. I usually buy stuff with Splenda instead, but it's all equally as bad. But I can't get plain water down very well. I would dehydrate if I had to drink plain water. I make a stew brand type of Crystal Light. I like it. I have given up a lot in my life, but I'm not going to give up my sweetener.

Anything I get has to be sugar free. Wylers also has sugar free. I get the store brand crystal light. It's called great value at Walmart. It's called Laura Lynn at Ingles.

i love ice cold drinks. i can't drink anything room temperature or just a little cold. I actually put my water bottle half filled in the freezer then i can just put a bit of water at a time and it gets so cold that it almost freezes going down my through and that is the way i like my water.

I'm also finding it hard to drink cold drinks. My aunt used to say that cold drinks are bad for the stomach and that I would develop stomach problems if I drink it especially when I eat food. I don't know if I believe it but whenever I have a cold drink, I feel like I'm abusing my stomach. Now, I don't drink cold drinks. I think if you drink cold stuff, your body gets used to it but if you stop drinking cold drinks, it might shock you body if you suddenly drink an ice coke.

I don't know that cold liquids or ice are harmful to a healthy person. I'm just stating it is difficult for me. Lots of people can't drink anything without ice. But then there are a lot if people like me who can't tolerate cold either.

Drinking too much cold beverage could be bad for your throat. This could cause swelling of your tonsils as well which will make it painful for you to swallow. So better take a bit warmer drinks.

I don't have tonsils. Had them out when I was 5. It does bother me. Room temperature is perfect for me.

I'm glad that doesn't happen to me. I don't like hot food or drinks because it burns my mouth. But I love my Louisiana hot sauce. Spice doesn't hurt me but hot food and drinks do.

Hi PointlessQuestions, I can still drink cold liquids but I don't drink it much anymore except for water or ginger ale. I like to drink warm water too, especially first thing in the morning, and I drink hot tea and once in awhile I'll have a coffee. Maybe it does have something to do with age. Blessings.

Hi Pose! I agree. I think it has age as a factor. I like ginger ale too. I get the sugar free kind. I drink it at room temperature.

I think you should avoid cold foods and hot foods. Both are bad. I rarely drink very cold water. May be only three months in a year. Rest of the year, I drink water that is at room temperature.

I am finding many people drinking at room temperature also. I can't tolerate hot food or liquid either. I drink warm coffee and warm food. It burns my mouth. I guess I'm more sensitive than most.

Hi PointlessQuestions, that happens to me sometimes but only when I have fever. It can be a sign of sensitivity but it is always best to consult your doctor before coming up with our conclusion. I hope all will be well with your health. Have a great day to you

I have to have my drinks ice cold, or else I just want to puke. My friend is like this, she's in her mid 50's. Have you ever asked your doctor about it?.

No I haven't asked my doc and she would probably send me for tests that I can't afford. Our healthcare isn't free. I will mention it though. It may be just aging. I see lots of folks here on this discussion are more like me. There are a few who are like you. I liked ice when I was younger and in my 40s and 50s.

i dont want to say age but maybe our bodies have become sensitive.i also stopped taking cold drinks eve in hot weather because i kept getting tonsils, now when its very cold i take hot or warm water and only do room temperature during warm climate.i also avoid soda and processed juices too because i believe the sugar is bad for my throat and would make me cough too.

I don't drink too much juice. I like fresh fruits to eat. Occasionally I will make juice from fresh, but mostly I just eat the fruit.

I don't have any cold intolerance but I avoid drinking too much cold water. Maybe you are right, Its because of aging or what. YOU must see your doctor for any worst problem with that so he can give you options for your diet.

Right. I will mention it to her. I think it's just aging. However, I don't want to find out later I had cancer, so I will mention it to my doc and see what she says.

I've never been able to drink ice cold liquids. My throat closes up and I start coughing. Even ice cream, I'm ok with a cone because it goes down one lick at a time, but give me a dish of it, or one of those ice cream cakes, same thing... throat closes up.

That's the same with me. I can't eat ice cream in a bowl. I like cones and I like those Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches. I let it sit for a few minutes to get just a tiny bit soft. My throat hurts with cold stuff. It's the epiglottis I think that actually gives me pain.

You might want to get that checked. My friend who is 56 just got diagnosed as having developed an allergy to "cold". Not only can she not drink iced drinks but she can't be out in the cold for any length of time ....it can even be deadly. This came on rather sudden as we have up until now always taken turns buying each other's iced coffees. I had never heard of such an allergy but it really sucks. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/cold-urticaria/DS01160 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_urticaria If you notice in the wikipedia article it does mention the intolerance for cold foods and beverages as a symptom.

yes it is. I've been doing a lot of reading up on this since my friend got diagnosed a little bit ago. Im pretty sad about it. I have not seen her in weeks because of the frigid cold weather here and as soon as possible, she and her husband are going to be moving to warmer climate. She has been my good friend for over 40 yrs.

Wow! I have never heard if that, but yesterday when I was walking with my granny skirt on my legs itched and tingled in the cold. I would get that way as a kid too. Like wind burn.

I can't drink anything cold anymore. When I buy cola, tea, etc., I just leave it setting out. With stuff that has to be refrigerated like milk, when I pour a glass or use it in cereal, I have to wait a few minutes for it to get to a decent temp. And I don't use ice in anything.

I don't use ice either anymore. I can use milk out of the fridge. I just can't tolerated colder. I can drink smoothies I make with frozen strawberries. The crystal light is from the fridge and the banan I use is room temperature. I can tolerate that without pain.

I could never really drink it but mostly because of my teeth or cheeks/jaw..(sinus?) not quit sure. But I am able to swallow very hot drinks since I am a little child. Don't ask me why. If it comes to swallowing, I do have (always had) a problem with it esp. if I eat bread. For some reason I always choke in it after 2-3 bites, no matter what kind of bread it is. I make fruit smoothies too but we drink them at once, so no freezing. Just made some fruit-ice (well my daughter did) so not sure if I will try it since I am not that fond of ice-creams. I read somewhere that it's better to (always) eat/drink warm food so perhaps it's even better this way? Although I want to eat more raw food (perhaps one day no cooking anymore?). I don't know if your problem has to do with your age although muscles (your swallowing mechanism is one of them) will get less stronger the older you get. Perhaps this is still a temporary problem?

You bring up some good points on warm being better for us and the swallowing mechanism being weaker when aging. I will have to ask the doc about it. I noticed I can drink warm coffee very well. I don't like it too hot because it burns me.
