Should I worry about using Java?

I just read online that the U.S government is warning people about using Java this weekend 1/11/13 - 1/13/13 and that people's computers might get hacked into. Not knowing about this problem yesterday, I was using Java to play online bingo but everything seems okay and nothing out of the ordinary with my p.c. Should I not use Java or is this just a warning that has no real threat behind it?

When I looked at my plugins earlier, I noticed a red warning text saying that it is known to be vulnerable and to use caution. I did update the plugin to the latest version, but it still has that warning. So far I haven't had any problems, but my browser is sandboxed and I use the NoScript extension which blocks java except on the sites that I allow. You're going to have to use it sometimes though. Most sites will not work without it.

Its fine for making the sites function and display correctly. However mal-ware and some invasive programs also uses java.

As long as your computer's OS is patched with the latest security patches, firewall, and anti-virus are kept up to date. Your computer should be fine. As long as you run your anti-virus frequently as well. Java is a major program that is a part of billions of devices, programs, and websites. It would be hard to live without such a program.
