Why do programmers hide easter eggs or work of art in thier software?

To add ownership and to show off. Sometimes programmers don't get to stretch in their field and there things they want to try, it's a personal challenge.

because they have nothing better to do than to hide useless stuff in dvds and games.

They think it is funny. It does add some excitement to programs. They like seeing how long it takes to find the easter eggs.

To add personality? It used to be more common, when people enjoyed making software for fun.
