Do you carry your own bag to shop?

As eco-friendly measure they have started charging people for carry bags, in the shops. Does that really discourage people from consuming less plastic? How must is the carry bag anyway? Few cents? Many people dont really care for the few cents when it comes to spending. How often do you carry your own bag to shop?

I was away from Philippines for a year, then I went home for the holiday. I was surprised to know that the wet market in our place is almost plastic bag free market. Good thing that I am used to bring our carry own bags which are intentionally for wet marketing. I hate to have lots of plastic bags before as I notice the plastic bags were piling up the house and totally annoying. Yes I like this new law or ordinance.. i am happy about it, No wonder when I came home we run out of plastic bags ...

I have seen that consistent use of this policy does in fact cut down on the use of plastic bags. I lived in a large Canadian city, and about 15-20 years ago, the shops there, grocery stores mostly, started this campaign. It took a while to catch on, but when I go back to visit my family, you see folks in line with their reusable bags. Many do it. they got into a habit and its sticking. Which is wonderful. Where I live now, they have catered to the bad habits people have, but they've been putting a concerted effort to encourage the reuse of bags over the past few years. I usually remember now to bring my own bags, and I try to refuse a bag if I can put my purchases in my purse.

thats a lovely practice you have. do you think platic bags should be totally banned - paid or free, like a absolute ban frm the shops.

I would like to see people give up the plastic bag entirely, but it won't happen while stores keep offering them, free or otherwise-it's just too convenient If I knew that every time I went to the store and I forgot my own container, and that I had no choice but to go all the way home or only pick up what I can carry my purse, I would start to remember my bags-every time

Me too I would like to see that happen. You know even dogs start to behave after goin through training and practice. I think if you really were made to go back to your house to pick your bag a couple of times, it will be registered in your brain to carry the bag, exactly like you brush your hair without failure before goin out ;)

I do all the time, in my home town anyway. There is a law there that has been legalized by our mayor about banning plastic bags in all establishments. It as been in effect for 3 years now and so groceries, department stores and shops use paper to wrap the merchandise. And because paper is quite easy to tear, I always bring an eco bag.

do you think even paper bags should be banned, since trees need to be cut for paper.

Here in my place, local malls do require eco-bags every Wednesday but some would still prefer buying plastic bags. However, in my take this depends on the consumer if they are really serious in helping the environment a greener place. Because some would tolerate buying eco-bags and some does not conform on such practice. I think the only way that such would be eliminated is that establishments should create eco-friendly carry such as in boutiques that they packed in paper bags rather than plastic bags.

Our city is going to ban plastic one-time use grocery bags in a few months. I have been saving the plastic bags because I use them for liners for my garbage bags. If the plastic grocery bags are banned, then I will have to buy plastic garbage can liners. I have a small kitchen garbage can under my kitchen sink. So the grocery bags fits perfectly in this small garbage can. Many mothers with babies use the plastic grocery bags to wrap the dirty diapers. I know many day cares put the dirty diapers in a plastic grocery bag to help keep down the smell and help to control the sanitation. So, if we have to buy plastic liners for our garbage cans, are we really cutting back on the plastic bags that are being used? Also, people don't wash and sanitize the reusable grocery bags and that is a health issue. One time, when I was shopping at a grocery store, I asked the cashier about this. She said that some of the reusable grocery bags that customers bring in are so filthy that she doesn't like to touch them when she bagging the groceries in their reusable grocery bags. When my city switches from the one-time use of plastic grocery bags, I want to use 'WASHABLE' reusable grocery bags and wash them after every use. I don't care how much soap and water that uses because I think it is important that groceries are bagged in grocery bags that are clean to prevent the spread of germs. So, I think there are pros and cons to the grocery bags issue. I think people should wash their reusable grocery bags or cashiers should have a right to say that they are not going to touch the dirty, stained grocery bags. Whatever is decided, what is most important is making sure the food is not contaminated.

Here you can buy a cloth or bag made from recycled plastic bottles from under two dollars to about three or four. And sometimes if you buy so much, you can get a bag free. Usually it is about ten dollars. I can see using your own bag because you can carry more then taking along your own plastic bags or buying it at the store. The trouble is that you need plastic bags, but more likely to put in your garbage, you do not need them to shop.

yes garbage bags are indeed one of the add-on problems. But that can be tackled as second step. If all carried their own bags imagine how less bags of plastic will be around in the dump yards.

yes because where i live, most stores charge an extra 5 cents to buy bags and in the long run, it is just cheaper to bring my own. some big box stores still provide bags for free, but it seems to be getting less and less around here anyways.

if you love your cents indeed carry your own bag. A cloth bag is not big deal you can simply fold and tuck it in your purse or handbag plus if you are young you can even carry it on your shoulders. Its more hep! ^__^*

I like to carry eco-bags when going to supermarket. I have big eco-bags, but sometimes it is not enough for all the things that I bought. At least that could save me from buying more eco bags and also lessen the use of plastic bags.

Hey thanks for effort. Maybe if they made the shop bags a bit fashionable, people will buy more of it and be encouraged to replace it with plastics.

Plastic bags are totally banned in our area. Instead they have introduced eco friendly bags which we need to buy from the shop keepers if we do not carry our bags which are non plastic.

At the few places I've found them (as I'm without a car in a widely 'sprawled' (i.e. designed to be traveled-over by car) city ... just the nearby Walgreens, FAMILY DOLLAR, and BUY FOR LE$$), their costs run from 50-cents to one dollar each. I understand that 'one plastic-bag at a time' might not seem like much (although I HAVE seen march-wildlife choking on less ), but I can also imagine one-or-two each trip coming out to quite-a-lot in total over the years! Seems like it's a better plan in the long-run to pay the few cents and save the world for one more day!

Here the supermarkets will not offer you plastic bags for free. They will charge you some fee and therefore this is regarded to be a method of using less plastic bags and finally it will be good for our environment. I like this rule. I already get used to bring my own bag to go shopping. It is not so troublesome. I like to do something to improve the environment. I am already sick of the pollution.

When the use of eco bags were implemented, I always bring along my own eco bag, most especially when I go to the grocery. But then, I started to switch back in using plastic bags coz I make use of the plastic bags as my trash bags.
• India

Yes its a pity becuz you have to use plastic bags to wrap trash. U cannot escape that. And actually they are have increased the sale of plastics for trash. How to deal with this?

I don't seems to see that charging people for plastic bags will help to save the environment. If you put that day is a 'No Plastic Bags Day', it should be really totally no plastic bags day. In Malaysia here our No Plastic Bags Day is every Saturday. Every Saturday, if my mother and I go shopping, we use our own plastic bags. Even there is a charge for their plastic bags, we will not pay for it but we rather use our own plastic bags. Over here, one plastic bag costs RM0.20.

Are happy with the use of plastic bags?
23 Jan 13
thats true, many donot care to pay that much and get the items in the bag. I feel the ban of plastic should be made mandatory, introduction of paper and jute bags must be followed.I have observed that the use of black coloured plastic bags and thin size ones are banned, but alarming is that many road side vendors again have started using. when a rule is applied it has to be followed strictly

Paper bags are also are not good to use even if they are bio degradable. The vendors will not use plastic if people carry thier own bags. Do you carry your own shop bag?
