They are now encouraged to, but it wasn't always like that. I don't know about the Jews, but the Christian Bibles (especially back before Martin Luther broke away from the Holy Roman Catholic Church with Protestantism) used to only be available in Latin and -only be held by the churches. Then Martin Luther &/or Johannes Gutenberg decided Christianity ought to be more of a grass-roots effort, something only possible if regular people had the Bible in their language. So now we all do. Except in some places where the government won't allow such radical philosophies as are put forth by 'the Gospels, the New Testament and the Old Testament' (the REAL Trinity, not the 'Trinity' Christians call "the Holy Spirit, the Son and the Father") of the Bible.

At the time of Jesus the Jews could not read their holy texts, as these were written in Hebrew and they spoke Aramaic all the best, urban

i keep reading this argument, like it was possible before Gutenberg for everyone to have a bible but for some reason the churches kept them from themselves.

That's true but had the bibles been written in English (Or other languages in other countries) then they could at least have written them and learned for themselves the corrupt practices, like simony, of the established Church and other novel practices all the best, urban

I am not really sure what you are getting at. I am a Christian and have numerous Holy Bibles, the Quran, Bagavad Gita, Buddhist and Taoist texts, books on indigenous religions, Mormon texts and others all the best urban

That depends on where we are. There are countries that will not allow anyone to have a "holy book" unless it's one that they approve of. Where I am in the US, we can have as many Bibles, Torah's and other Jewish writings as we want, as well as the Quran and any other book. As long as we have the money to buy it, we can have it. That's what freedom means.

Everyone can have a Bible or a Torah at home whether they are Christian, Jew, Muslim, Hindu or whatever. Whether they do (or whether they read it if they do) is another matter entirely.

Hello Tushavi! I am not religious or anything but I don't see the harm in having any type of book in your house. Happy MyLotting. ~AussieGal~

We may have Bible, Torah, and Quran in our home or any other book we so desire.

Well of course. There are probably a dozen bibles in our home. Plus one Quran and one Torah I believe, so the purpose of studying other religious texts. If I did not live in a wealthy nation with a well-off family, that might not be the case though. Or if the Bible was not translated in my first language, we may not have one. I know there are Christians in the third world that might not be able to afford a Bible or have a Bible in their own language.

I am a christian, and yes, I do have a bible in my home, whic I read every morning. The bible is my lifeline to god, besides praying. Ir I didn't have my bible and don't read it, then I feel that my lifeline to god wouldn't be as close as it is now. i wouldn't be the same without god in my life, that is for sure. I rely on Him for everything, good or bad. Take care!
