Hello mylotters, have anyone heard about negative calorie food? These are a type of fruits or vegetables that require calories in our body in order to digest. So when you eat them you burn your calories to make them digest in your system. Good enough? another weight loss benefit? Well i know few vegetables that help you do that. IF you have more of such keep adding them here so that we all know them and include some servings in our food. 1. Ice berg Lettuce 2.Cabbage 3.Broccoli 4.Cucumber Bring on more if you all have. Thanks and happy mylotting.

topffer thanks a lot for this great information. But we are not talking about which food has more or less calories. But we are talking, which food burns calories to digest than it will give us. but i will still do a research on this. Thanks a lot.

Garlic has 138 kcal/100gr and is not a negative calories food, nor grape fruit.

"Negative calorie" is a misnomer. What it means is that there are some foods which have fewer calories than it takes to digest them. Celery has long been considered to be an example of this. If water can be considered a food, then that truly has no calories and, if drunk cold, will actually use a few calories as our body warms it. Here is a comprehensive list of foods which are considered to be so low in calories that their net calorie content is little or nothing: http://www.livestrong.com/article/28647-list-negative-calorie-foods/

owlwings some foods are called A Negative Calorie food and not low calorie as you said so the reason for this is a negative calorie food is a food that is purported to require more calories to be digested than it provides. Just as i explained.

Hi! It is a news to me that there are some vegetables like Lettuce, cabbage, broccoli and cucumber which when eaten help us burn calories in out body. It is winter season here in Delhi and cabbage, broccoli and cucumber are easily available and we keep adding these vegetables in our lunch/dinner. However, except cucumber we cook them before consuming. I think if these vegetables are taken raw (except perhaps broccoli)they will be more beneficial to us. Don't you think that radish and carrot will also fall in the same category? Good post.

I am not very sure, but yes Carrot also falls in negative calorie. But raddish i don't think they fall in anywhere.

What i realized is grapefruit is a negative calorie fruit. Where as i know since a very long time that garlic helps in reducing blood cholesterol and reduces wrinkles and acne if taken first thing in the morning when you wake up. Just 2 to 3 pods will do. But i am still unsure if Garlic is a negative calorie.

I have heard about this, i think though that it is a negative calorie but then it would have to be consumed in certain amounts... having a broccoli for a day won't really help if the next 4 days you will consume high calorie foods, right? =) But this would sound really nice if we manage to know a lot of variety of these foods (we know they are mostly fruits or vegetable) and take them according to schedule - a well planned one that is followed religiously.

As far as I know there are no negative calorie foods.Digestion of food is significantly less than even the lowest calorie food.Water is the only substance that contains zero calories.People are just going to have to accept the fact that they need to watch their calorie intake if they are after losing weight and do some exercise, instead of trying to find shortcuts all the way down the line.
