Should you let a 3 day old baby sleep through the night

My cousin had her baby home from the hospital for the first night after giving birth and the baby slept all night. Ok so happy for her that she got sleep but the baby is only 3 days old and needs to be fed on a regular basis. Should she wake the baby to feed it or let the baby sleep through the night.

Baby will let her know when he is hungry. Mother needs all the sleep she can get.

No, no reason to wake a baby to feed it. I agree with the others - a baby will wake up when it's hungry enough, even a newborn. If, later on, the baby isn't gaining weight the way it should, then she might, but she should talk to a doctor before doing it even then.

Why not? Over here it's normal to let a baby sleep if it's sleeping. Nobody will wake it up to eat/drink. The faster it does sleep the more normal they find it over here. Mostly a just born baby will eat in between 11pm/midnight and have the next feeding between 6-7am.

Even doctors and Nurses have different views on waking a newborn child, some believe you should wake them every 4 hours others have said to let them sleep that they will not starve themselves. I personally never woke my children to feed them except my oldest who had jaundice and had to be woken up.

Let the baby sleep. They are still adjusting to this world. mine was like that until after five days. He started waking up demanding for his feed. Plus he did not just sleep through the night but also most of the day. He strted sleeping less as he grew up. Do not wake the baby, you will only disturb him aand he may become irritble fter that.

Hello poppoppop. It appears that the baby is off to a good start on a good sleep schedule. your cousin should use her own instincts. As for me I would let the baby sleep since the baby will know when it is hungry and wants something to eat. Your cousin is very lucky because a lot of babies wake up several time in the night and take a long time to start sleeping through the night.

One of my kids did that too. The doctors told me to wake him and make him eat.. so I tried, but he did not want to wake up. After only a day or 2 he broke this habit himself and started waking up when he wanted to be fed.

I noticed the two weeks I wad in the hospital that they seemed pleased if the baby made it through part if the night without waking. I think usually they will wake. Though my son would of slept days if you let him. We would have to wake him every two hours fir a couple of months though he was very small.

I have a son who would be sleeping all night. But I could not stand not feeding him every 4 hours. I do feel that he needs to be fed that often.

A mother's milk does not usually come in fully until the baby is 3-4 days old. Before that it is pre-milk that is very high in protein. A baby does not actually need to eat that much in the first few days--he or she saved up some body fat while in the womb. Unless a baby is premature or was born at a very low weight, there is probably no reason to wake a baby to eat. They will wake up when their tummies need food. My daughter started sleeping 6 hours through the night at about 2 days old, would wake up to eat, and then go right back to sleep for another 3-4 hours. She would also have an afternoon nap that was between 3-5 hrs. She was getting enough to eat while she was awake, letting her (and me!) have a good sleep.

When my kids were that age I let them sleep if they slept. I never woke them ever! And I even asked the doctor about it and she told me if the baby is hungry they will wake up on their own there is no reason to wake them. If her child is hungry the baby would not be sleeping. There is no reason to wake a sleeping child no matter what the age. The baby will be fed plenty when the baby gets up for the day...

She should leave the baby be. If a baby is hungry like any other person they will start to cry and want to be feed. A baby will not starve themselves. yes they do need to eat regular but only when they are awake you can't force a baby to eat when they are not hungry and also that could leave to over feeding. A baby will eat as much as there little body needs. Some babies just sleep throw the night right away and others do not.

as long as she checks on the baby and all is well let the baby sleep. Babies will let you know when they are hungry. No point in waking up a baby to force feed it, it is way to young to get on a schedule of any sort anyway!
