I disagree with you as long as laptops cannot be upgraded than there will always be room for desktops. The other thing is that most owners of laptops and tables usually own desktops at home. If I was a video editor, a company owner or part of the school board which device would I choose a laptop or desktop? the answer is desktop. As a video editor I would use a desktop because its more powerful and if I needed more power I would just go and buy new parts not a new computer. For a company owner and school it would save a lot of money.

Laptops are getting cheaper? I don't feel they are. The one I have is older than five years and needs replacing. I keep checking the flyers and still the prices are too high. When I bought my eldest daughter her laptop, and my younger daughter bought her own, the prices were reasonable (a year and two ago). I am always checking the flyers and the prices are still $600-$1,000. I am not prepared to pay that much when a) this laptop is still working and b) I have a desk top to turn to when needed. How much are laptops where you are?

I hope that desktops don't become obsolete too soon. I still have about 9 more years to get my money's worth out of my Mac.

I have to disagree. I have two laptops and there is a time when I need one of them instead of my desktop but I still think of my desktop as my main computer. Most laptops cannot be upgraded like a desktop so you are limited in many ways. Also, for true mobility I need more battery time. You will always have to look for a power source sometime or another. With more convenient ways of connecting online, hooking up to the internet is not as hard as it used to be but there are still limitations when using a laptop on the go. I can take my desktop and upgrade components easily compared to a laptop when upgrades are often times not possible. I consider my desktop computer to be my reliable main computer. I have a hard line as well as wireless internet access and plenty of room for upgrading as needed.

Excuse me but not everyone has a laptop! Not everyone can't afford one! Laptops are not cheap! Right now I have a desk top and I got it from my brother who is a computer programer. He got my computer form his work place for nothing. I told him when I need a different computer I would like a laptop. Until then I will be using a desk top. Laptops are at least $250.00 and some are over a $700.00 or more! I don't how you can say laptops are cheap and the price of laptops are becoming cheaper? I think you are full of it!

Where can I get a decent laptop for $250? I've been watching the sales flyers and don't see anything under $600.

Any laptop that costs $250 or less is not worth it.

I think it is good that the laptop and desktop price is coming down. I brought the desktop long time ago with around five times what it cost now and it was around 20 times more cost when the computer first came. I hope the price comes more down so that every people can afford it.

For myself personally, I prefer a desktop to do my work; but I can see how you could be right. I think, though, that the laptop could soon be replaced by the tablet.

I have to disagree with you on that one. I think having a laptop is important for use on the go but for my serious work, I have to have my desktop. For one thing, you are still restrained by the need for a power source. I know some of these new netbooks can go for about 6 hours without a charge but most of the full size laptops I have used have about a 4 hour limit on the battery and then I am looking for a plug in. I also have the need for an internet connection. There are so many ways to connect now that internet is not as hard to get on the go as it used to be but there are still costs and limits. The real reason I feel the need for my desktop is that I feel the need of my "Power Computer". It is harder to upgrade a laptop and there are limits. I can get a full sized desktop and have plenty of room for upgrades. A motherboard with 4 or more slots for RAM upgrades. Interior room for additional hard drives. Room on the motherboard for a video card which most laptops are not upgradable in that area. I am also used to my regular sized keyboard. When I try to type on the smaller keyboard I always hit too many keys. I guess it depends on the application, if you need a computer that is more mobile of more of a station type computer with room for additional items. I really like using my large monitor with my desktop. I can watch free tv shows and movies off the internet on my monitor and like it better than cable because I choose to watch what I want when I want without having to watch at a specific time. I still use my laptop when I need my computer on the go but at home I work off of my desktop for first choice.

You know, I actually just got a new laptop on Monday because there is something wrong with my desktop computer and I'm just not able to go without a computer in my day to day life. However, I am not abandoning my desktop because we are going to replace those parts on it that need to be fixed and I will go back to using my desktop as my primary computer. I guess I have to say that I will be one of the last people that will abandon my desktop because I really do prefer them over a laptop.

For personal use I'd prefer laptop over desktop as this could be easily carried anywhere. However, here in our country, for computer shop owners, desktop is still the practical choice over laptop for durability purposes.

I can see there becoming a time where desktops are no more. I don't think it's going to happen anytime soon though. I have a netbook and a desktop, but I primarily use my desktop at the current time. Most of my important programs are on my desktop. I will agree though that laptops are increasingly becoming the normal thing to use.

Hello Tushavi! I have both a laptop and desktop computer. I don't want to get rid of any of them. I like my laptop because if I want to be in my room, on the lounge to watch TV or sometimes even while I am in the bath, I can bring it with me. I like my desktop computer because it's better for gaming for me and is a lot quicker to do other things than it is to do on my laptop. Happy MyLotting. ~AussieGal~

well i guess it's a matter of personal preference. i got my first desktop about fourteen years ago. it broke down just after the warranty period, which is one year, is over. i then got a laptop and had three laptops since then. i recently got a new computer, which is a desktop. i think i'm going back to using a desktop from now. i prefer a desktop because it's cheaper. imagine the same processing power at less than half the price! laptops are mainly for people who carry their computer around, be it at home or outside. however, i almost always use my computer on my bed so a desktop (connected to my tv) makes a lot more sense to me.

I think as a computer tech i recommend desktops for durability and ease of upgrades. Laptops are nice and cheap now but they don't last as long due to heat, battery life and the damage caused to moving parts by carrying them around. Its easier and cheaper to upgrade a desktop when software requires a higher video card or more ram. Some laptops you cant upgrade the video so you'd end up having to get an all new system.

The other desk in my office has a desktop. It has not been turned on since we moved in. We also have a couple of towers in one of the closets. Between tablets, laptops and smartphones, there is not much use for a desktop. I think we mainly keep it to store files from the past we had just never bothered to burn to disk or whatnot.

That is probably true for certain people, like the ones that need to carry their work (which happens to be their laptops) with them. Not everyone has to leave to an office or sit on a plane traveling to some meeting across the country.

I personally have only owned laptops but desktops have better uses for some applications. Laptops need to be turned off more often than a desktop as it has limited exhaust to stay cool. Desktops, on the other hand, have a wide opening for ventilation. Both options have their positives. What we need to think about when owning a computer is deciding which one is going to work for you based on your lifestyle. I've always chosen a laptop because it gives me the ability to safely log into my personal accounts on the go with no need to borrow one from someone else. It gives me the flexibility to stay in touch with what I need on the go.
