Cell Phones

It seems like now days every one has a cell phone. I'm guilty of having one too. All over the internet you see videos of people who are texting while driving and some times they end up in accidents that even lead to death. You also see people talking on their cell phones and getting distracted and not paying attention to traffic or road hazards. When I'm travelling I will have my cell phone, but I will wait until I'm at my destination to answer my phone. I've heard that some states it is illegal to be texting and driving. Well most people should be paying attention to the road and their surroundings not to their phone while driving. I don't even think a person should be talking on their cell phone while driving. But in the town I live in you even see police officers talking on their cell phones while driving. Fellow mylotters, what is your opinion of using cell phones while driving?

I am all for not using a cellphone - whether for calling or texting - when driving. It isn't too much to ask I suppose to arrive in your destination in one piece and not to harm other motorists. If one cannot really avoid using their cellphones while driving, then I guess they better park somewhere first and answer the call or text. Or invest in bluetooth earpieces so they can still place calls without taking their hands off the wheel.

Even if you are using a bluetooth earpiece and you're arguing with some one over the phone you might lose your focus on your driving and not be aware of your surroundings. Thanks for responding!

I am absolutly against using cell phones while driving, even with the free hands devise. That devise leaves your hands free but not your brain and you cannot concentrate on the road as you would if you did not use the gadget. Years ago, the world survived without calling each other every 2 minutes. Maybe we could learn how to do it again.

Absolutely agree with you marguicha!! I remember years back when they did studies of how music on the radio would be a distraction! Thanks for responding!

I think with police officers, there may be a necessity and they are usually telling where the bad guy will be found or requesting help. Otherwise unless there is a talk button on the cell phone and it is not in your hand, but attached in someway so that you can use voice control to turn it on, you should wait until you can pull over and park and talk. As for texting, it is dangerous as you actually have to look at the phone and type in the words. And even if you can use talk to text, well I would want to check to see if the words appear correctly. I am not guilty of having a cell phone. Why are you?

Didn't mean to sound like I'm guilty of having a cell phone. I had to use a phone while I was taking individuals to dr. appointments but it was work related and I had hands free equipment that I could answer my phone with. These police officers are holding their cell phone in their hands, so there are no hands free equipment. Anyways a police officer could pull off to the side of the road, they expect it of us.

It is such a bad idea. I know a heck of a lot of states made it illegal to text and drive, but hardly any make it illegal to talk on the phone and drive. I like it when people pull over to make a phone call. It's too bad it's not more affordable for people to have those voice activated call systems. They wouldn't have to take their attention off the road to make a phone call.

I would think if one was smart enough to get a hands free set they'd be smart enough not to look for a pen and paper to write stuff down. But then again I've seen idiots trying to put on makeup while driving!

Still I think even using handless equipment to take calls is still a distraction to what is going on behind the wheel. For example what if the person you are talking to wants you to write down some information or remember a date or wants to set up an appointment, one would be distracted to find a pen and paper and write. Or you might be having an argument with some one and you're enraged with this person, being enraged behind the wheel of a car is not a good thing! Thanks for responding!

No reason to be guilty of having a cell phone, STOUTjodee. Absolutely, only dumba$$es use their phones to text while driving. It is against the law in DC and MD and soon to become illegal in VA (where I live) as soon as the governor signs the bill which may be happening as we speak. It has been shown that even hands-free talking can be a distraction to driving. I have been guilty of answering a cell when driving (usually work-related), but I cut it real short. Driving in the VA/DC/MD metro area is horrendous enough without having a phone to take away my full concentration on the roads and the unpredictability of other drivers. Besides, I drive a stick. I don't have enough hands to shift, steer and operate a cellphone simultaneously.

Thanks LaDeBoheme, really didn't mean that having a cell phone is a bad thing! Yes, driving a stick would be difficult to do while texting! I had to because of job reasons talk on a cell phone , but used hands free to do so and I was on the job. Most of the time however, I would call the company back when I had stopped.

It should really be prohibited to use the cellphone while driving as it can be a great distraction. One should just atleast have their voice mail on so that any caller would just leave a message in their call was unanswered. If it is something really important, then one should at least find a place where he can stop and take the call.

I agree with you! People need to keep their attention focused on their driving and road conditions and other drivers that maybe also on their cell phones and not paying attention. Thanks for responding!

Those people who talk and text while driving are a symptom of our society--selfish, filled with a feeling of self importance and uncaring about what their actions will mean to others. With all the publicity about this, all the commercials and PSAs, all the laws passed, they still do it because they feel their personal business is more important that the safety of those around them. I think that anyone that causes any type of accident while texting or talking on a cell phone should go to jail for at least 12 months and be required to do charitable work while serving the sentence--taking care of homeless people, accident victims, and other people who are victims of apathy and the callousness of others. If we don't get some humility and perspective into our society we're in even bigger trouble than we are now. There is NOTHING that can't wait till you get home or to a place where you can safely park your car. Lives have been lost, people have been condemned to a lifetime of physical suffering or had loved ones murdered by drivers who think that talking about a movie or texting about lunch is so important that they'll put the lives of everyone around them at risk. These people disgust me. They don't deserve driver's licenses. And don't even get me started on the moms ignoring their children as they text, talk and play games on their infernal phones. I've seen small children in tears as they bed their mom to watch some great feat they've accomplished but are ignored cos mom is on her damned phone.

Cell phones are one of technology's most widely used devices. We often wonder what we did without them. While they are a mervel and a convenience we have to take care that we don't abuse the cell phone while we enjoy it. Texting and driving has become a great problem across the country. Driving is a privilege that should not be marred with the distractions of the cell phones. There is a time nd a place to be connected with family and friends. The highway or busy street is not one of those places.

Totally agree with you @sender621! It's bad enough that there are some people that aren't even using their cell phones you have to watch out for because they are careless drivers. Letting a careless driver with the use of a cell phone while driving is a disaster. Thanks for responding!

Here in our country, drivers are prohibited to text while driving. But i think some drivers are equipped with a carrier for their phone while they drive, so when someone calls they can just put on the loudspeaker and talk while driving. Though, talking on the phone can also be a distraction when driving. It's still dangerous that way.

Having a cellphones has its responsibilities, its not just by simply using it or being in to what is trend. A person who have it must be aware to all advantages and disadvantages of its used, in order to avoid any untowards incidents might happened specially outside home.

Mobile phone seems to be necessity nowaday, everyone has one even more, in the place i lived in, sad but true, people use them texting/calling while on road, driving. many accident been but people still doing such texting/calling while driving. it should be implemented not to answer your phones while driving to prevent such incidents and or even deaths. some of the time people are just not conscious about such thing.

I don't approve of using cellular phones while driving because as you have said, using cell phones might cause vehicular accidents. Here in our country, you will normally read signs on the road saying it is prohibited to use phones while driving but even though people know the hazards of using one, still you can see a lot of people not following this road guideline. The government should impose strict rules on this matter. They should impose penalty and fine so that people will somehow feel that is not good to use the phone while driving on the road.

Dear friend, most of the accidents will occur due to mobile phones while driving. When you present in a car when the call makes then you need to stop the car and answer them and then go. In such case if you have a latest mobile you can activate car mode for activating you voice speech on it. This will avoid your accidents while driving.

I totally agree with you on this. I am against it and on people who cannot seem to put down their phone. I hope those who are careless enough to use phones while driving are not t thinking of others welfare of they not care about their lives b they should at b least try not to harm others. I have I seen how much damage it can cause to poor pedestrians getting involved b in accidents these people. This b is the main reason why for me I really try not to text my bf when I know he is driving.

In my country you get a fine if you use your phone while you are driving. The fine is 1500 kr which about $250. I think that it is fine that there rules about driving and cell phones because it can be a dangerous combination. My husband tends to answer the phone when he is driving, and we have often discussed that topic because I don't think that is safe to drive and use the cell phone at the same time. One of my friends always texts while he is driving and I think that is even more risky than talking on the phone. He is an experienced driver, but I still don't understand that texts while he is driving.

I don't text or talk while I drive. It is to dangerous and I have common sense. I know alot of people who text and talk on their phones while driving. I think they are crazy and one of these days they could get into an accident. I hear and read to many stories of people who text and talk when driving and then getting into accidents. SOmetimes hurting or killing themselves plus the other people. People just don't get it! If people had more common sense they could wait to use their phone, these accidents will stop then! It is not the end of the world if you don't text or call back right away! If your friends and families don't like it,it's their problem!

I'm one of the few people that doesn't have a cell phone. The darn things drive me crazy. I always figure if I'm lucky enough to be away from all the darn electronics in my house the last thing I want is a phone going off when I'm away from home. Here in Ontario Canada it is illegal to talk on a cellphone or text while driving, and I'm 100% for the law (Its one of the few good thing our government did in the last few years!) If people want to risk their life talking on a cellphone when driving, I figure that's their business; However, its not just the driver's life that is at risk, it's everyone else lives too! I think people who talk on their cellphone or text when driving are selfish and stupid, and are putting everyone else's lives in danger, and that's simply not cool in my books! I think they deserve a serious fine and should be charged. Sorry if I seem a little harsh on the topic, but I don't like it when other people recklessly put other's lives in danger.

its forbidden over here to text and drive at the same time and I am glad this is the case. Truly not everyone will adhere to that law and break it but I personally would never text and drive.

Texting while driving is worse than talking on the phone, but in several places, even talking on the phone (unless on bluetooth) while driving is illegal. It should be, it's just as dangerous as drinking and driving.
