Redecorating and home crafts

When redecorating your home room by room, do you make some or all of your items for that room? Do you recycle your old furniture into something new? I have just finished my boys room and I have to say it looks great now. We recycled the beds and made a fitted wardrobe out of the timber. It would have been a shame to just bring it all to the dumpsite. Next week we start on the girls room and have already started sewing cushion covers and have fabric picked out for curtains and bedding. I also plan on doing some canvas prints for their room too.

I do a lot of recycling and moving things around. Right now my bedroom satisfies me. I have an antique bedstead and almost matching dresser and bureau and I had a blue quilt on the bed. It looked okay, but I was looking for something different and remembered that I had a big comforter on a bed downstairs that wasn't often used, so I brought that up and it looks like it was made for the room! I did buy a new (Dollar Store) lamp to replace one that I broke. I made the bedside rug and was given the little chair. I have two framed pictures that my daughter took a couple of years ago, and another one that I cut from a calendar and made a frame from plastic canvas.

Dollar stores are good at any stage of life! You'd never know the lamp was a cheap one unless you picked it up and noticed how light it is!

Oh definitely :) I am so used to the cheaper version of things that I would find it hard to pay a lot for the same item in a different store when I can get it cheaper at a dollar store :)

Yes I also move things from room to room, I think a different place for things also make them look different in a new kind of way. Some furniture items I might sand down and repaint or stain and it gives it that "new" look and feeling. At this stage in my family life with young kids dollar store is real good and some pieces actually look more than something you pay a lot for. :)

Hi there.. I love recycling things and making it a new one. It's like a same thing but in a different angle. If budget are insufficient and can't afford to buy new things or change paintings or whatsoever, Recycling really rocks. =) Enjoy redecorating. Have a nice day.

I do like making a bunch of it myself. Recently I have begun repurposing things I have around here instead of buying anything new....and I have come up with a few things I really like. Good for you for reusing your things...we don't need more garbage in this world...recycling is fantastic!

I bought myself a computer desk when I was in my teens, and because it was self assembly I had trouble putting it together, father was absolutely NO use whatsoever, instead of taking it back, I decided to use the bits to design my own desk, the finished design was of my choosing and it worked, even though I used a few extra bits, it was personalized. It's amazing what you can do when you put your mind to it!

Hello Elemental, I hope that you are fine! When children were very small I had time to do decorations for kid´s room, such as cushions, frames, dolls, bed clothes, curtains. But as they grew older, their patience to be at home decreased. And my duties at home became much more bigger. So I have no more time nor patience to do decorations. Maybe when they enter to college I can do decorations for our room, parent´s room. Now as they are almost teens they choose by themselves their rooms deco. We do not change furniture, but living room sofas. Blessings Elemental... dainy

We are currently redecorating all 3 of the boys rooms. The twins share a room and our 3 year old has his own room. Hubby is making shelves for all 3 of the rooms. We needed furniture for the twins rooms. Hubby found a wonderful all wood dresser and chest of drawers at a local thrift store for $15 each!! We did have to buy bunk beds for the twins but they were fairly cheap brand new at Walmart. I did check craigslist and local thrift stores for the beds but they all wanted as much or more than Walmart wanted for brand new bunkbeds! We are recycling one of the baby beds into a desk for my craft room and I will sell the other one.

I like DIY stuff, but I'm not sure I'd be good at home decor DIYs. I would do some smaller things, such as decorating mugs or planting stickers on a table lamp. I wouldn't really redecorate beds and big stuff like that myself, that seems too difficult for my knowledge and affinition to DIY.

Soon I'll be redecorating for Christmas. It's best not to get too crazy since it'll only be up for a month or two.
