The Mylot Friends Illusion

March 6, 2013 3:59pm CST
So, do you have many Mylot buddies? I have quite a few. Are they friends though? I would say it is far to admit that I only made friend request because you made a comment a post that was interesting - I wanted to see if you made another interesting one. Can I call you friend though? I think some of you I can... Gives a cheeky wink to the ladies and a knowing nod to the blokes Some of you are complete fruitcakes and I think society is happy that you spend long hours in your home tapping away with hate on your keyboard. Some of you are so annoying, you views are completely different to anything I think. Nonetheless, you belief in what you say is something that is quite noble and I respect it. Some of you I do consider friends. Some of you make me look for your posts, because I know I am about to be entertained. Some of you peaked with your one interesting point. Some of you, I would actively seek out if possible for a beer or two. I will drift away from some of you. Some of you I avoid like the plague. Some of you will unfriend me. Most of you will know which group you fall into. Some of you won't. Some of you are not even on my friend list. As long as we have fun and the debates continue, that's all that matters - right?

I like this discussion I also like the list you have made. I agree with all of it. I try and create discussions that are interesting, although sometimes they actually stink. And I try to respond in a way that relates to everyone. Hey Now!!! But fun is fun and thats what we are here for.

. I like the way your mind speak. By the way, I belong to the last "some of you" not in your friends list. I do have some real friends here and friends I have never met yet. We support each other and yeah the socialization is different if we know how to tickle each other. There are giggles and argues, but I like the exchange of views. The opinions doesn't always have to be siding me which shows real feelings.

Hi Robs , true basically it's from the way how people commented that we are made to request for a friendship. And the way you categorizes it seems i belong to annoying friends of got so different views..Hahaha Thats okay friend. We write to express and not impress.

I like that - write to express, not impress... Quality line. I am too much of a gent to say which group you fall into.

What is a friend? Cyber friends can be transitory but whilst they exist they are as much friends as those that we may know 'in the flesh'. I am rarely very serious but I have made friends here who have quite literally saved my sanity and to whom I owe much. Some of these people I have met and regularly visit several times a year. Others I Skype with and even more exist in Facebook land. Cyber friends provide a suitably comfortable way to offload my greatest fears and concerns as to them I am 'virtual'. I sometimes wonder what image the ones that have never actually met or spoken to me have of me. Perhaps it's better that I remain ignorant!

I do agree - I do see some of my online friends as genuine friends. It is easier to open up to an online friend - all that awkward meeting and making sure you haven't got food spills on your clothes, is taken away and one can just chat. It is so much easier to actually chat too - I often chat to a friend on the other side of the world, whilst travelling to work. I think it can be difficult to accept online friends as the real deal because some of us are old enough to remember when we spoke to friends in person or over the phone. Any friends in different countries tended to be relatives living abroad or penpals

My mylot friends are not an illusion. Over the past five plus years they have helped me in many ways. We even phone although we live in different continents or countries. Many stayed with me during my horrific year last year when I had two open heart surgeries in the U.K. and was so desperately ill. They called me and emailed me and kept me going when I wanted to just give it all up and die. They helped me to laugh at myself through my pain when on morphine and codeine for so many months due to complications. Yes, others may be classed as a little odd but so what? It doesn't matter in the end does it? A laugh, a cry at a misfortune for a mylotter. We share because women need women to offload. And we love conversation from men too. Laughter is important but then so is respect. They know that I am still suffering from the effects of anesthetics and so get the word wrong and frequently miss spell a word and do not notice it at all. Me - who taught English and literature and is a published writer. And now I have difficulty writing. But they encourage me and say how much I am improving and give me a boost in my self esteem. I just can't imagine my life wihtout my Mylot friends and I speak from my heart.

It was only meant as an opener to get people here to my post. I do concede that friendships can be made - I thought I covered everybody in my post. I do understand how sites like Mylot can be a lifeline to some of us. I never meant to deride what people get from the site.

I don't think anyone could possibly add up to what you bring here... Well except one other person. You have a unique and entertaining way of thinking like I have never seen before. Your so intelligent that sometimes it makes the rest of us feel really stupid. Or at least I have felt that way talking with you on here, not your fault. But, I enjoy reading your discussions and responding to them. I don't think I have ever been in a debate with you, I would not even give it a shot to be honest. I would back down as fast as it started. I know you would win regardless. And no I don't think I am giving you too much credit. I really feel this way about you, all of it. I have plenty of people here that I do consider a friend, good ones too. I know without any doubt in my mind if I went to some of their towns and needed help they would be there for me in a second! It doesn't matter where we met, just that they are really friends... And having fun here is the most important thing!

Thank you I am flattered. Living in a house full of women, this is they only place I can get a word in. I am a softie really, I will accept most people's opinions - That is what makes mylot so good, the different opinions and views. You are one of the ones I watch out for - Your posts tend to bring a human touch... It helps to balance out the surreal, Crazy and the Lamb. I think what we see on Mylot is that we all have the same worries, issues and hopes. Some of us are just a little further along and can help others

I do agree with all this. I for one usually only accept friend requests, as I don't wanna offend anyone who sends me one, but I never really send out friend requests, because I'm here for the debates, the discussions, and well, the payment, of course, but I don't really believe in Internet friendships, so it that sense of the world, none of my Mylot friends are real friends to me.
