Mudslinging! Can Manila be saved?

It's ex-con Erap versus Dirty Harry, in a mayoralty debate @ UP Manila yesterday. A pathetic show of old men grumbling, a sorry example to youthful students, brainy and excited, and both old men lashing tirades at each other, mudslinging, that the students were reduced to determining who's lying more, instead of knowing what could still be possibly done for old Manila, and the people, such as themselves. The ugly exchange of words between these two men must be censored. Can the COMELEC do something and eliminate these two. Both are bygones clinging to a last hurrah. Both want to end their books of life with a scripted closing chapter, that of serving Manila, how nice!, but of course everybody knows they are in for show. Save Manila, please, if at all it still can be saved.

Indeed both looked pathetic, but more pathetic is Manila for what is the future of this key city in the hands of either of this two aging politician. They are old but have not learned ethics. If they they don't even know the meaning of respect, then how can we expect them to rule the people with respect? Both of them tried to destroy each others image and by so doing they have both destroyed their own selves. In a way the non-censorship of their hot debate did one thing good. It revealed their true color. The kind of persons they really are. I remembered Erap calling the very respectable Senator Jovito Salonga 'senile'. But the good old man must be old but he talks with sense and has been forever living in dignity. This Erap should use the word senile to himself. He is on his second childhood stage together with Dirty Harry. They talked like kids for they do not know yet what is right from wrong. Is there any hope for Manila? The answer is obvious.

@romzee. Yes he is admirable. Indeed he could have been the best president. I read an article some years ago that said...Senator Jovito Salonga, the best President of the Philippines that never was. I think both he and Ninoy were the best Presidents had they've been given the chance. Sadly, when Senator Salonga ran, he did not win. Most of the people don't know how to vote wisely. On the other hand, Ninoy Aquino was assassinated before he was able to get the Presidency from the dictator Marcos.

Good point, salonga. Am a fan of your surname sake. At the end of the day, I can only say "Hope springs eternal."

too bad there is no 3rd candidate to be an alternative option against the 2. How Greedy Erap can be, He was a Mayor of San Juan, A Senator , A vice President and now a Mayor, He is like the first person who wants to be a mayor of 2 different cities,I know he did it since his family already dominated San Juan so now he wanted a new city to build a dynasty with.

Exactly, after he failed conquering the whole Philippines for he was ousted for plundering the people's money, now he is on to build his kingdom in Manila. He is not satisfied with just San Juan. He also wants to conquer Manila knowing for a fact that Manila is a very rich city and hence an ideal place to plunder money.

Feasted on the blood of the people, most of all the poor. He does think the world is focused on him, doesn't he?

Ah yeah, i saw this one, and even the ones on national tv in a morning show where both have challenged each other on who was born in "tondo" (a place in manila). Boy aren't they even thinking about what they can do for the poor city, but they are battling out like children on who was born where. I think these two were just putting a show, yes that is true... there could be more underneath. I wonder what is the reason why Erap would run in Manila as mayor when he handled san juan for years before becoming the president, right? This just do not make sense to me and it wonders me and makes me think what could be the reason. I am sure Mr. Lim has a more valid reason of running as he was in the place and serving the place longer than i could remember.

I agree with your assessment, Erap relocated and that only means he is manipulating the people for self-serving purposes. Mayor Lim at least devoted his time and effort to Manila, pero di sana niya pinatulan ang kababawan at katusuhan ni Erap.

With due respect may I intrude. Yes I agree with both of you. With no more choice between the two, I'd choose Lim although he reacted badly. I am so disappointed that he stooped down the level of this stup!d Erap. He could have won the respect of the people if he did not. But sadly, he was provoked and did his own stup!d thing. Erap is the last candidate I would respect. He is just like Gloria. Both are greedy to be in power because they have vested interest. Why would he not just run for Mayor in San Juan? He wants one of his sons to do that while he would try his luck to extend the kingdom of Ejercitos to Manila. So beware Manilans. Be wise!!!

Yes, Erap is a joker, and he looks like it, doesn't he?, because he wants us to laugh at his language, his logic, his philosophy, his ethics. After everything is said and done, at least Mayor Lim's summary of Erap is true: di naman maganda ang pagkatao niyan. And of course, the old Mayor did give his best for service of the people.

I am not a fans of them. I don't know why they are acted like people who are not professional. They are like kids slinging mud's to one another. Yes, you are right, if we are the COMELEC, better to disqualify them. I don't like Erap, he is like Gloria. Greedy of the position. He don't want to admin that he loss already

Power is addicting, and surely some people can't resist it specially Erap !

That two candidates are not a good example to the youth who become the future leader. They must tell their suppose to be the agenda not quarreling and throwing of wrong-doings in the fast. Residents of Manila must determine thoroughly of whom of the two are they going to vote for mayoralty.

If I was a Manilenyo, I would cast a vote for Dirty Harry. Erap would make Manila a vicious city, no doubt about it.

I agree on that ! If I am a Manila resident I will definitely go for Dirty Harry which is a lot cleaner than Erap. Surely Erap wants another place where he can establish his dynasty.

I am really wondering why Erap keep on running for a position, when she was convicted and pardoned during the Arroyo administration. Maybe he still wants power and more money because he has many children by many women. And to think that his daughter by Laarni Enriquez, are in London stodying. How sosyal! Where is he getting all the money for the upkeep of his children and mistresses. I would rather choose Lim than Erap.

Yup. Bankrupt. That was what I thought when he had to sell his mansion at Polk. The gambler is casting his die.

Just like Ramon Revilla, except Dolphy who didn't run for public service but endorse one has a lot of girls and women in their lives. i guess erap has no choice but to work to finance her mitreses chidren. so hard his life is, had to support so many children, if only he had focus only one family and not allow his lust to take over

Well eileen, because he is bankrupt but has to finance all his children by his mistresses, he will again take the chance on politics. I hope the Tondo people will choose who is really for service to the people, not for their own benefit. Letran, i remember him denying one lady who introduced hereself as her child. Maybe he denied her because he thought she will also ask a share of what he corrupted.

Hello eileenleyva, i don't know whom i should trust but my mom has been a LIM fan since she was a public school teacher in Manila. but i can understand how LIM became so old with politics that he wasn't the man he use to be, still using his old style but he should have act wiser now compare to his attitude then. besides, how come they didn't have a third candidate

I know,on the last election 8 people ran for Manila Mayor. but now there are no alternate option. The only choice is the lesser of the 2 evils. Just because GMA had controversies, people forgotten all the corruption Erap did, and worse they forgave him and let him get away from it, due to his charisma to his blinded fans and satisfying his fans gave him freedom.

GMA with all her controversies has yet to be proven in court while Erap is a convicted corrupt president. So sad that GMA granted her a pardon ! But the electorate seems to have a short memories and a false perceptions, that he even got the second highest vote behind Pnoy on the last presidential election, oh boy ! It only clearly shows the stupidity of Filipinos...

I haven't watched this but have definitely read about it earlier. I guess these debates are a bit helpful especially to concerned Filipino citizens. With that said, words are just words, and they don't mean anything until they're back up with great action and results. I hope Manila could have a great leader that could really make it a better capital city, on par with the other capital cities of the world.

Erap has a score to settle with Lim, for deserting him during EDSA II . You are right, it has become a contest to determine who is saying or not saying the truth in a showbiz and comical style, all personal accusations , getting out of hand and veering away from their political platform on how the city would benefit.

I think he is not a preferable alternative too. Years ago while he was still a city councilor he arrogantly scolded a parking attendant in a now defunct hotel along Roxas boulevard for charging him a parking fee. Insignificant as it seem, but this also show how a servant of the people treat his constituent once election need is over.
