While lurking on facebook pages, suddenly I saw a big picture of a woman stated that she committed suicide this morning because she can't pay the tuition fee and there is this policy called Forced Leave of Absence (FLOA) that does not allow students to enroll if they do not pay their dues on a strict deadline. There is already news regarding that matter already. http://www.remate.ph/2013/03/group-mourns-tragic-suicide-at-up-manila-slams-commercialization-as-major-cause-for-death/ (not a referral link) Upon reading the link where it is coming from seems that it was her mother who have posted her pictures saying that she will miss her daughter and asking forgiveness for failing her and for the harsh world that she wasn't able to experienced the wonderful life that she deserved. After that I've read the one who shared which is included on my facebook account, where I first saw the post regarding this UP Manila student. While he is giving sympathy, he stated that the father of this student is a taxi driver while her mother doesn't have a work but still forcing her to pay Php 1000 per unit or Php 20,000 per semester. Later on he stated that Noynoy is claiming that the tuition in schools has given justice already. What the heck? Blaming the government all over again for the personal matter? Yes I sympathize this student who became clueless about her situation for paying the tuition fee and the school might be inconsiderate with the financial situation of her family. I don't want to judge other people but for a fact that she is the eldest among 5 children, then her father is a taxi driver while her mom is unemployed I am still wondering of why sending her in school wherein they know it is costly to pay for the tuition fee? Unless she is scholar. Did they really analyze their situation first before sending her on schools? Did they ever think of financial stability of what are the things that can suffered? I know there are sudden circumstances wherein you wouldn't know that you are going to encounter the financial problems. However I am still thinking if this student doesn't have to end her life if she only knew the solution to her problem especially if her parents helped her regarding that matter.

that is a sad story.. personally you are right there how come they send their daughter to a school with a high tuition fee without thinking their capabilities regarding their financial status.. their are lots of public colleges here in the Philippines specially in manila.. i studied on one of them and i only pay a little amount for my tuition fees my father is just a driver also so i know we cant afford private schools and i still want to go to school.. it is a good school but not as exclusive as those well know universities.. i hope these things will not happen again no life is worth killing just because of tuition fee..

There are some schools even if you are not scholar but at least they are still affordable and can have the right education. That is the problem about our culture here at times when it is all about the name of school that is being concern here. Though in the case of Kristel I think there is really something wrong with the school system about changing the policy in terms of tuition fee. I've already read the comments wherein some people say that it is not the school's fault but the person who took her life. She is actually scholar but what I am wondering is that how she was being categorized in a bracket in which she can only pay in discounted price or her tuition.

Hello Metatronik, the driver is sour graping and blaming the government instead of themselves when they should have chose a cheaper public school for his child to graduate. I watch bandila, the newscaster mentioned that she could have raised her concern to the network and then have a fund raising for her to continue her studies, which should have worked. but we don't know how it felt

I don't know the statement from her father since I haven't heard or read about it. It was actually my friend on facebook who have been that sour graping since he can relate with her a little bit. He even mentioned the spoiled brats from rich families who can rely with their parents even for the building up business. I mean what the heck? There is nothing wrong about priveleges. As I've read the article I may say that the school itself has the problem. Though here what I don't like is that Mariz Zubiri was the one who is blaming the Aquino Administration. It was actually stated like this on the article She said they condemned “to the highest degree” the “anti-student policies” of UP Manila and the Aquino administration for forcing students to stay out of school and take their own lives. As if it was really confirm about forcing students to stay out of school. For what I understand it was just Force Leave of Absences which is I think that is just temporary.

when i heard that news, of course i was shocked and for me its normal to have an increase in tuition fee,why the student need to take her own life for that reason, and aside from that there are many ways on how she can still go for that university with a small tuition fee.

Thanks a ton for sharing this discussion. Well this is really shocking to hear about the girl and my heart goes to that poor girl who must be having so many aspirations in her mind regarding her career but destiny had something in store for her. I think the entire system has to be blamed for this and due to this we r loosing out many poor bright n talented students. What say?

The system of school must be blamed here although if we know for a fact that we can't change the policy then of course we should be the one who will adjust on it. It wouldn't be easy but if they started to think for their own solution like transferring her in other school since she is just first year then she would still continue her education.
