I decided to go shopping with a couple of family friends because we're all getting ready for college and I guess it would be kind of weird to be wearing the same high school clothing when you're a freshman in college. After looking through a couple of jackets and T-shirts, we found our clothing and went to the cashier. She was a worker who seemed to be around our age and seemed very well experienced, and I was kind of curious as to how much she earned. I still haven't gotten myself a job, just to see what it's like, and she immediately changed the subject to how today wasn't as busy as the day before. Is it bad that I ask these questions? I mean, this is a part-time job, and typically minimum wage is about $7/hr, but I don't really understand why it's disconcerting. Do other countries or companies allow people to disclose this this information? Keep in mind that I'm only basing this off of Part-time jobs.. I guess my curiosity will never be sated until I get a job myself..

No one will tell you their personal wage unless you are really close and a situation come up that they want to share their income with you . My friends would ask how much I make and I would tell them I am comfortable and they would understand that I will not go in specific because they wouldn't either . I dont mind asking a potential employer what is the entry pay like because I will have to fit the salary with my lifestyle . If its not enough I will not do it lol but that is different than asking someone about their personal salary because that should not concern me .

It is considered to be rude to ask a stranger about his/her age and salary. Guess, you just did that and that's why she didn't answer. Speaking or curiosity, i got one. How come you guys work and study at college at the same time? I mean, you either have to be super brainiac or super hardworking to be good at both right? Makes me feel dumb lol.

Some people really preserves their private information. As far as earning is concerned that also comes to ones privacy. Most of the people it difficult to disclose to others especially to strangers. At that time you (as you described) is just a customer there and you and she doesn't know each other. But at the same time I think she would have disclosed it to you if you are a friend of her.

How much money I make is really dependent upon how much work I do. If I have a day when I can actually sit and write, I can hash out $10 an hour, give or take. This is if I can write without interruption, however -which rarely happen. That's not here on MyLot, of course, where I have to sit and write for an hour just to make $1. I would say that it is considered bad etiquette to ask someone how much money they make here in the United States. I never considered a cultural thing, but I suppose it might be. On a side note: There is nothing wrong with wearing your high school clothes to college unless they no longer fit you.
