The Ever Disappearing Socks..Or Maybe Not!

Socks have an annoying habit of disappearing don't they? Some Black Hole must exist, primarily for them. Millions of pairs will be spinning around that Black Hole, never to be seen again. That's what I thought when I was 'adamant' I'd lost a pair of mine earlier. I had all my clothes in the bathroom ready to put on after my shower. For some inexplicable reason I could not find my pair of socks that I KNEW I'd taken out of the drawer earlier on. I couldn't believe it when they 'weren't there' in the bathroom, along with my other clothes. I started muttering to myself in a grumpy fashion (as you do) saying things like, 'For God's sake, where ARE THEY, I've just got them out of the drawer, they've f****** well disappeared!' So, after dressing and brushing my teeth I had a look (not a very good look as it turned out) for my socks, in the bathroom, then I retraced my steps into the bedroom, looked in the drawer, they weren't there so I shouted out.. 'JOHN!' He came out of the living-room at that point. 'I can't find my socks and I KNOW I've taken them out of my drawer as they're not there now. I can't understand it. How can a pair of socks disappear like that?' John came up the stairs (I was in the bedroom), went into the bathroom and exclaimed. 'Found them!' This was after about half a second. I walked back into the bathroom and there they were, nestled in the toilet-roll multipack! 'They're camouflaged..look! That's why I couldn't find them!' How embarrassing although I didn't have my specs on at the time, so that might've had something to do with it.

That's 1 pair down and found. About 1 billion around the world left to go.

I think this would make a good story book for kids: "Insert name here: The case of the missing socks or the missing socks detective or the missing socks specialist!"

You must have very smart socks. It seems they know how to hide well and camouflage themselves real good. Nice!!! Look, this has happened to everyone at some point. The real sock mystery is with my son. He hangs out on the couch playing his games. He throws his socks or whatever he does. Then no matter how hard you look for them, yo can never find them. On some occasions, I find only one sock. It seems as though the other escaped somehow. LOL.

Yes, that infamous black hole. But the funny thing is that black hole is only for socks. Strange. LOL.

I half expected to read that FloJo had stolen them to make into a surrogate companion and playmate, as I have had cats do that before. I cannot see a think without my glasses.

At least you were able to find the missing pair. While I have not! And not just socks, I tell you. I am also missing a pillow case. I noticed while I was hanging them out to dry, one piece was missing. All of them are in pairs. I took off all of them at the same time so that i could wash them. But then I could not find the other one. It was big, alright, but really couldn't find them until now. It must have been gone to oblivion! I just hate missing a pair!

It's so frustrating isn't it? Perhaps there is a Black Hole for pillow cases as well. What other explanation could there be for their disappearance? I hope it turns up though.

I'd like to make real, possible reasons for its disappearance. But we seem to be losing a lot of things lately. And there is no burglary! I hate to point my finger on those "spirits" who are living with us to be the one responsible for this. But where else can I look for those things? I live in just a small house where everything are in place. No one else touches our things. And I am the only one who does the laundry. And a pillow case is a bit big to be misplaced which is absolutely impossible.

I am glad they were found! =) In my house, my kids socks seriously do disappear it seems. I have a ton of "one sock" out of a pair! Sometimes they wear mismatched socks now because I am tired of not being able to find socks and I have bought them a million pairs! I am not buying anymore for a while. They can deal with their socks not matching, I don't care. Lol.

It annoys me too so I told them they are the ones walking around like that since they never put their socks in the right place!

Mystery solved, Watson, we have the culprit, apprehended them. Thank you for making me laugh, I had visions of you going crazy trying to find these socks, trouble with me is that I see it as a personal insult, like they are doing it purposely to punish me or play a trick on me! At least you found them, I wonder what John thought. Did he think you'd lost your marbles, or mumble about you going crazy. Still at least you found them... eventually... I think that deserves a nice hot drink now! Put kettle on John!

Hi Janey, Well mine also end to grow legs walk - if you can imagine that! ... Anyway, I think I have found the resolution. I always try and buy the same socks now. Always black and in multiple packs. I suppose I can get away with never having a different colour pair on. I would imagine though that if I went to pair them out, there would be some odd ones.. Come to think of it, just one odd one really because no matter how many I lose, they would all still pair up together until I came to the last pair, which may not have a mate! _Derek

Hiya Derek. Yes, I tend to have one of John's black socks hanging around for quite some time on the clothes airer until its 'friend' turns up, which could be many, many days later. Very strange!

Around here, socks are forever disappearing. I am suspicious that my trio of cats may be eating them. Either that, or they are dragging them into their cat cave and building a bed for themselves.

yeah it is crazy how socks disappear. I just bought my daughter some socks and know it's like we will have to buy more since they disappear all the time. It's like we need to invent something that keeps socks together.

HEY atleast you found them dont feel bad i have done that many times and my husband goes right in there and picks up looking at me asking me "How on earth did you not see that"!! sometimes just to save time i call him in there to find what i lost because i know he will find it no problem at all it saves a lot of time and energy. well your glasses might have something to do with it but i can almost guarentee that i would hae done the same thing as you and not have seen them.

Like you said, at least John found them. These socks of mine aren't cheap (longer versions) so I'm quite relieved about it actually. At least it proves I DID take them out of the drawer in the first place!
